Protein And Energy Levels For Wintering Beef Calves And Effects On Subsequent Production, Marcus Hoelscher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The need for minimum amounts of protein and energy by animals for maintenance, growth and production has been recognized for many years. It is also well known that the requirements will vary depending on species, age, weight and rate of growth or production. In order to provide livestock feeders with useful guides in feeding, several feeding standards containing recommended nutrient requirements have been prepared. The most commonly used standards for beef cattle are the “Morrison Feeding Standards” (1956) and the National Research Council’s “Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle” prepared by the Subcommittee on Beef Cattle Nutrition (1959). Feeding standards give …

Derivation Of The Equation For The Instantaneous Diffusion Current At The Cylindrical Drop Mercury Electrode, Prodromos Xenides

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The photographic method of analysis, introduced in 1922 by Professor J. Heyrovsky, is dependent upon electrolysis at the dropping electrode of the solution being analyzed. The method is based on interpreting current voltage curves that are obtained when solutions of electro reducible or electro oxidisable substances are electrolyzed in a cell in which one electrode consists of mercury falling drop-wise from a very fine capillary glass tube and the4 other electrodes is a pool of mercury. The circuit shown in Fig 1, is one used in the polarographic method of analysis. It consists of an accurate slide wire in which …

Strength And Physical Fitness Of Rural Versus Urban Boys As Determined By The Rogers Physical Fitness Index, James L. Welton Jan 1960

Strength And Physical Fitness Of Rural Versus Urban Boys As Determined By The Rogers Physical Fitness Index, James L. Welton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The farm family has been recognized by many as a hardy lot who could endure a hard life and strenuou8s labor. On the other hand, city people have thought of as being weaker because of a life less demanding. In the past it has been accepted generally that the rural boy was superior to the urban boy in over-all physical strength. The rural boy has been stereotyped as a big, muscular individual with a strong back and weak mind. The town boy, on the other hand, has seldom been considered as an exceptionally strong individual. Throughout the years the farm …

A Study Of Certain Cultural Practices And Chemicals For The Control Of Wild Oats (Avena Fatua L.), Wilford Henry Wallace Jan 1960

A Study Of Certain Cultural Practices And Chemicals For The Control Of Wild Oats (Avena Fatua L.), Wilford Henry Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wild cats is problem in the small grain areas because it has certain characteristics which allow it to survive and infest the soil. It is an ecological equivalent to the crops with which it grows. It sheds its seed as they ripen and all seeds do not ripen at the same time. The seeds are dormant at the time they are shed and remain so for varying lengths of time; they may also go into secondary dormancy. Any effective control must encourage germination and destruction of plants before seed production. Wild oats rates as the most troublesome weed in an …

The Digestibility Of Holocellulose Prepared From Various Forages With Special Emphasis On The Comparative Digestibility Of The Cellulose Portion And The Digestibility Of The Entire Holocellulose Fraction, Marion M. Thurston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Estimating the feeding value of forage grasses is one problem that has confronted nearly every livestock nutritionist. The conventional system of proximate analysis as it was developed in weends. Germany over 100 years ago has been repeatedly criticized because the products are variable for cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The crude fiber classification commonly suggests the fibrous, poorly digested and relatively unavailable portion of a feed. The ability of the ruminant animal to digest cellulose in the crude fiver fraction was not considered in the weende system by classifying it in the unavailable portion of forages/ The nitrogen free extract, commonly …

Physiology Of Nitrogen Fixation By A Species Of Achromobacter, Royal Donald Goerz Jan 1960

Physiology Of Nitrogen Fixation By A Species Of Achromobacter, Royal Donald Goerz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The metabolic pathway by which certain microorganisms incorporate atmospheric nitrogen into their protoplasm is at the present time unknown. In an attempt to determine this pathway scientists are studying the physiology of various nitrogen fixing bacteria and are within reasonable limits extrapolating this information from one organism to another. Thus far they have found certain physiological characteristics which appear to be common to all nitrogen fixing bacteria. Several years ago a species of the genus Achromobacter was isolated and shown to fix atmospheric nitrogen. Thus far very little has been published concerning the physiology of nitrogen fixation by this organism. …

An Analysis Of Front Page News Pertaining To Juveniles In South Dakota Daily Newspapers For The First Three Months Of 1960 With Regard To Favorable And Unfavorable Content, Harlan S. Stensaas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Newspapers have often been accused of emphasizing the sensational giving minimum attention to the non-violent or “good” news in which young people are involved. Evidence to support or to disprove such accusations has, however, been lacking. The accusations have evidently been made on a basis of casual, informal observation of the media and on the basis of public opinion polls. The teen age group, then, is in the public eye and the impression which the public gets is perhaps obtained largely through the mass media. The question which arises would be, “is the press fair in its presentation by Gilbert …

Changes In Cardiovascular Condition Resulting From An Eight Week Training Program As Shown By The Cameron Heartometer, Merle L. Foss Jan 1960

Changes In Cardiovascular Condition Resulting From An Eight Week Training Program As Shown By The Cameron Heartometer, Merle L. Foss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effect of different activities and conditioning exercises on the cardiovascular system has been the basis for many recent studies by physical educators and physiologists. No doubt much of this research has been prompted by statements such as that by Reidman, “An athlete is only as good as his heart.” Reidman reasoned that the ability of the athlete to perform work was dependent in large measure on the ability of the heart to supply oxygen to the muscles. This, in turn, was dependent upon two factors: (1) the capacity of exertion, and (2) the ability of the heart to return …

A Study Of Some Herbicides Applied Pre-Emergence And The Influence Of Rainfall Upon Their Activity, Walter E. Splittstoesser Jan 1960

A Study Of Some Herbicides Applied Pre-Emergence And The Influence Of Rainfall Upon Their Activity, Walter E. Splittstoesser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Weeds have been with man for countless years and it is evident that they will be with man for many more. As tillable land decreases and population increases, weeds will have to be controlled to insure the best land use. Weeds are controlled by cultural, biological and chemical methods. Cultural practices are most widely used and generally the most practical. Biological control is useful only in specific areas. Chemical control of weeds was not widely used method until the discovery of selective herbicides about 1900. A group of chemicals now receiving much attention are the herbicides commonly called “pre-emergence chemicals.” …

During the period between 1940 and 1960 artificial insemination of dairy cows grew from the experimental stage to an extensive business enterprise in the United States. According to the Dairy herd Improvement Letter (Vol. 36, No. 3, A.R.S., U.S.D.A.) only 7,359 cows and heifers were artificially inseminated in 1939, but by 1959 this number had increased to 6,932,249. Along with the extended use of superior sires, a logical conclusion was that some attention should be directed toward increasing the use of good female germ plasm. If this could be accomplished, a more rapid improvement in the quality of dairy cattle …

Measurement Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Above A Water Table In Situ, Anthony S. Dylla Jan 1960

Measurement Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Above A Water Table In Situ, Anthony S. Dylla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The physical property of soil which enables it to pass or conduct water through its macro-pores is known as its permeability. Permeability should not be confused with infiltration, which is the term for expressing the absorption of water into the soil. The infiltration rate is the rate at which water will enter the soil surface. The rate at which water moves through soil is called the hydraulic conductivity; whereas a measurement of this same rate is used to calculate the permeability. Hydraulic conductivity is most commonly expressed in the units of velocity, whereas permeability is expressed as the square of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The subject of production control systems in small commercial printing plants is a fascinating one to this author. It involves employment of every management technique that has been devised by manufacturing production engineers. Commercial printing activities are defined as all these printing plants producing a printed product on a jobbing bagels. Further clarification of printing industry activities is the separation of printing and publishing activities; publishing being limited to the printing of newspapers, magazines, books and miscellaneous items of like nature. Jobbing shops are those whose operations are usually of a non- repressive nature, becomes the output is not produced …

Response Of Feeder Lambs To Diehtylstilbestrol, Diallyldiethylstilbestrol, Diallylhexestrol, Dynafac And Animal Fat, Donald House Reid Jan 1960

Response Of Feeder Lambs To Diehtylstilbestrol, Diallyldiethylstilbestrol, Diallylhexestrol, Dynafac And Animal Fat, Donald House Reid

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Livestock feeders operate on a narrow margin of profit. Their profit generally depends on rapid and efficient live weight gains rather than on a wide spread between buying and selling price of the animals. The need for efficient meat production has prompted agricultural scientists to develop and investigate a desperate array of compounds having growth stimulating properties and thereby aid the livestock feeder in improving rate and efficiency of gain. The market situation of inedible animal fats has changed dramatically in recent years. Lard and tallow are not currently used to the extent that they once were in the manufacturing …

The Effectiveness Of Various Phosphorus Carriers For Increasing The Yield And Phosphorus Content Of Alfalfa And Barley, Lloyd E. Davis Jan 1960

The Effectiveness Of Various Phosphorus Carriers For Increasing The Yield And Phosphorus Content Of Alfalfa And Barley, Lloyd E. Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An adequate supply of phosphorus in the soil is essential for optimum crop production. Phosphorus has often been referred to as the master key to agriculture and to life. South Dakota soils have become depleted in phosphorus as a result of its removal from the soil, primarily by cropping. It is known that in South Dakota only a small percent of the phosphorus which is removed annually by crops is returned to the soil through application of fertilizer or manure. In many soil areas signs of a deficiency of available soil phosphorus are becoming evident. This is indicated by the …

The Chemical Effects Of Gamma Radiation On Blood Sugar, Linda Kay Rames Jan 1960

The Chemical Effects Of Gamma Radiation On Blood Sugar, Linda Kay Rames

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The passage of nuclear radiations through materials may cause chemical and physical changes in these materials. Particles of ionizing radiation pass some or all of their energy to the electrons of the material and thus cause ionization or excitations. Because of the significance of water in biological and chemical systems, its decomposition by nuclear radiation has been studied. Processes of ionization and excitation cause the formation of the free radicals (H) and (OH) from pure water. These may react to form H2O2. In a biological system the effects of ionizing radiation on H2O may ultimately result in cellular disturbances. For …

Response Of Inbred Corn Lines To Drouth Under Several Different Environmental Conditions, Paul Terrence Nordquist Jan 1960

Response Of Inbred Corn Lines To Drouth Under Several Different Environmental Conditions, Paul Terrence Nordquist

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recorded in the pages of history are many tragic tales based on man’s want of more food. Many of these were brought about by drought conditions and the crop destruction which followed. Man in his quest for protection from such catastrophes has observed that some plants seem able to withstand the drouth conditions that kill or severely damage others. The agent or agents responsible for this tolerance have never been specifically pinpointed; however, certain internal and external conditions of the plants often seem to be correlated with it. The problem is complicated by the fact that the conditions correlated with …

The Curtain Antenna Design, Cheng-Lee Chao Jan 1960

The Curtain Antenna Design, Cheng-Lee Chao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper treats, in an elementary way, the antenna array problems, the effect of varying antenna array spacing and the relative power intensity of antenna arrays. The radiation of a directive antenna might be projected from one to another with highest efficiency and a minimum of interference with adjacent stations. We have to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and discriminate against undesirable noise. The principles of radiation on the wave theory have been known for several centuries. The wave theory of light was first proposed by the English physicist Robert Hooke in 1665 and developed twenty years later by the Dutch …
