The Effect Of Chemicals On Weed And Conifer Seedlings, Fay Hyland Jun 1929

The Effect Of Chemicals On Weed And Conifer Seedlings, Fay Hyland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As reforestation becomes more important in the United States, there is an increasing demand for forest tree seedlings. The production of the seedlings is a somewhat specialized phase of the industry calling into use certain details of cultural practice not employed elsewhere. One of the major items of expense in the care of forest nursery seed beds is the control of weeds. A previous study estimates that the total cost of hand-weeding untreated seed beds may be reduced two-thirds to four-fifths by the use of chemicals. It is apparent that any procedure which will reduce the weeds will materially reduce …

History Of Grenada (1830-1880), Rebecca Martin Stokes Jun 1929

History Of Grenada (1830-1880), Rebecca Martin Stokes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The object of this thesis is to give not only a history correct as to fact, but also to paint a picture, or rather a series of pictures that shall pass before the reader in a chronological manner presenting a living panorama of the history of Grenada; its first settlers, customs, education, religion, achievements, disasters, and development from the time the Red Man was pushed back and the White Man entered, to the overflow of carpet-bag rule.

The pioneers of Grenada were a dauntless race of men with souls to dare all the dangers and difficulties of frontier life, in …

Procedure In A Study Of Speech Disorders, Herbert Edgar Rahe Mar 1929

Procedure In A Study Of Speech Disorders, Herbert Edgar Rahe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The chief purpose of this thesis is not to present a body of scientific observations in support of one particular theory of treatment. Nor is this the place to record the testing out of all of the possible theories presented.

Nevertheless, the results of some practical experience are recorded to show the necessity of understanding the psychogenetic approach to this neglected phase of our education, as well as understanding the organic approach, My chief aim is first to be of aid to teachers in the grammar schools who are confronted most with this problem; and, secondly, to stimulate further research …

The Morphology, Life History, And Control Of Some Common Species Of Oniscoidea Found In South Dakota, M. T. Fredricksen Jan 1929

The Morphology, Life History, And Control Of Some Common Species Of Oniscoidea Found In South Dakota, M. T. Fredricksen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since practically no work has been done upon the life history and development of the common pill bugs or sow bugs, it is the aim of this paper to record the investigations of the life history and development as carried on by the author. The morphology was added in order to give the reader a definite idea of the organization and structure of these species.

A Systematic Treatise Of The Coccidae (Scale Insects) Of Brookings County, South Dakota, Merrill K. Riley Jan 1929

A Systematic Treatise Of The Coccidae (Scale Insects) Of Brookings County, South Dakota, Merrill K. Riley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this paper to present in an introductory manner a systematic treatise of the scale insects of South Dakota, by making an intensive study of all species represented in Brookings County. It can be asserted that this paper is a complete treatise of all species present, but a thorough attempt was made to obtain specimens of all existing species. This treatise involves only the species now present, though at times other forms have been reported. Notes have been included giving the plants, location, and abundance.

A Contribution On The Staminate Flower Of Cucumis Sativus, Kenneth W. Simons Jan 1929

A Contribution On The Staminate Flower Of Cucumis Sativus, Kenneth W. Simons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In Heimlich’s recent paper (2) on the staminate flower of Cucumis sativus, the conclusion was reached that the tetrasporangiate stamen was complete while the bisporangiate stamen was only half complete. In Miller’s more recent investigation of Schinocystis lobata (4), the bisporangiate stamen was shown to be complete and the tetrasporangiate stamen double. These opposing points of view suggest the advisability of further investigation in the Cucurbitaceae. Since Heimlich described two separate apical prolongations on each tetrasporangiate stamen and only one on the bisporangiate stamen, it seemed to the present writer that these prolongations might indicate the double and single natures …

The Founding Of The Brookings Register, Neva Whaley Jan 1929

The Founding Of The Brookings Register, Neva Whaley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thus in this “History of the Brookings Register,” I am producing an effect. This effect had to have a cause. This cause was the development and success of the paper, which is in turn is the effect of there being some cause for its development. That cause is the town of Brookings. What I have been trying to say is that without the town of Brookings there would have been no Brookings Register. Does it not seem logical then, to take up a brief history of the found and settlement of this town?

Bridge Survey Practice, R. B. Yule Jan 1929

The Manuals herein are written for conditions that exist in the Mississippi Basin and particularly the North Central States but will find general application with minor changes.

The Effect Of Treatment With Ethylene Chlorhydrin Upon The Respiration Of Sweet Potatoes (Ipomea Batatas), Leon J. Tyler Jan 1929

The Effect Of Treatment With Ethylene Chlorhydrin Upon The Respiration Of Sweet Potatoes (Ipomea Batatas), Leon J. Tyler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

  1. Treatment with ethylene chlorhydrin produced marked results in the respiration of four of five varieties of sweet potatoes tried.
  2. Not all varieties of sweet potatoes respond alike to the same treatment. Porto Rico variety of sweet potatoes did not respond to the treatment.
  3. There was a considerable difference in the amount of CO2 respired by different varieties.
  4. The need for further research here with respect to the specific effect of chemicals upon the cell system becomes apparent and again emphasizes the importance of Biochemistry.
  5. There was possibly an accelerative effect on sprouting due to increased respiratory processes brought about …

Sketches Of Robert Browning's Women., Mame Morris Boulware Jan 1929

Sketches Of Robert Browning's Women., Mame Morris Boulware

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

No other poet has given to the world such a diversity of woman characters as has Robert Browning. Longing for variety he represents his womanhood, not in classes but by individual differentiation; he portrays the simple, the complex, the subtle, the particular, the impulsive and others--each distinct from the rest. Browning emphasizes natural charms less than intellectual and moral loveliness. He strives to depict women as they are in themselves. By suggestions of spiritual nature, by delicate workmanship, he sets his feminine character before us. With dexterous versatility he creates type after type, each a character in herself. Two of …

Hydrogen Ion Concentration In Lead Acetate Solutions., Emile Pragoff 1907-1991 Jan 1929

Hydrogen Ion Concentration In Lead Acetate Solutions., Emile Pragoff 1907-1991

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It shall be the object of this investigation to measure the hydrogen ion concentration in lead acetate solutions and to apply the measurements to the control of color in the preparation of chrome yellow pigments. Lead acetate solutions of high concentration, known as lead liquors, are used in the preparation of chrome yellows by precipitation with sodium dichromate. Since the color of the pigment is believed to be dependent on the hydrogen ion concentration of the lead acetate solution used, such a study is of interest to dry-color manufacturers and to users of chrome yellows. The methods now in use …

Formal Retraction Or Literary Repentance In The Elizabethan Age., Irene B. Rhoads Jan 1929

Formal Retraction Or Literary Repentance In The Elizabethan Age., Irene B. Rhoads

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Before entering upon a discussion of those writers of the Elizabethan Age whose works present specific instances of Personal Retractation, let us turn our attention to the problem in general and try to find out why writers of this age and of earlier times felt it necessary to repent of their literary efforts. Some critics may say that retractation was merely a literary convention; and why bother about its beginnings, sources, et cetera? Others may have the opinion that it was a personal trait, only a means of satisfying some peculiar whim or fancy of the author. Some may go …

The Effect Of Ultra-Violet And Infra-Red Rays Upon The Fission Rate Within A Single Clone Of Paramecium Caudatum And The Heritability Of That Effect., L. Sebastian Rose Jan 1929

The Effect Of Ultra-Violet And Infra-Red Rays Upon The Fission Rate Within A Single Clone Of Paramecium Caudatum And The Heritability Of That Effect., L. Sebastian Rose

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Light in its various phases exerts a marked influence on the functional as well as the physical structure of all living matter. The phenomena of light involves two theories: (1) the wave or electro-magnetic theory conceiving light as consisting of electric emanations or waves of various frequencies and intensities given off from many substances. (The principle source of light as thus conceived is the sun with its estimated temperature of 10,000 F.); (2) the quantum theory which conceives light as a factor involved in ionization in chemical reactions (negative electrons are ejected from a surface of metallic iron when a …

The Mississippi Question And The Problem Of Statehood In Kentucky., Harold J. Stipe Jan 1929

The Mississippi Question And The Problem Of Statehood In Kentucky., Harold J. Stipe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The history of new state movements in America is always an absorbing study; the character of the settlers and the compelling factors that motivate them are revealed with startling clarity as the reader turns the pages back into the annals of the period. The history of America has been, in a large degree, says Frederick J. Turner, "the history of the colonization of the Great West. The existence of an area of free land, its continuous recession, and the advance of American settlement westward, explain American development." In no state was the influence of the frontier advance upon political development …

Early Catholicity In Kentucky And The See Of Bardstown., Wickliffe Lockett Jan 1929

Early Catholicity In Kentucky And The See Of Bardstown., Wickliffe Lockett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Early Catholicity in Kentucky is centered so closely around Bardstown, that to think of it at all in its early stages, is to think of Bardstown. Within the limits of this quaint little old town are many places of historic interest but in connection with this subject, we are concerned only with those which relate to early Catholicity in Kentucky. Perhaps the most interesting of these is St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, once the Cathedral of the West and a monument to the pioneer Catholics of Kentucky. The history of this beautiful old building will be given later under a separate …

Zionism From Haran To Lausanne., Albert N. Mandelbaum Jan 1929

Zionism From Haran To Lausanne., Albert N. Mandelbaum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many writers on Zionism endeavor to explain the causes that contributed to its creation and developments. Most of these writers are extremists in their views. Some ascribe Zionism to the internal force only. Others ascribe it to the external force only. The religionists gloat over the idea that modern Zionism is the result of inner yearning of the Jewish people for a restored Palestine, where the glory of God will be returned unto Zion. The nationalists believe that Zionism has come into existence because of external influences only. The Jew has been oppressed, discriminated against and persecuted. He attempted to …

Truancy In The Public Schools : Its Cause And Cure., Kathleen Miller Jan 1929

Truancy In The Public Schools : Its Cause And Cure., Kathleen Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this age in which we live it is not hard to find a problem but it is often difficult to choose one. These problems have arisen as a result of the complex social and industrial institutions which have evolved as a result of human inventiveness and the competition among men to better our living conditions and increase our comforts. According to statistics compiled by the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the proportion of those who enjoy these modern conveniences is small when compared to those who have suffered as a result. The problem of this study is one which …
