The Visible And Invisible Aspects Of Miscarriage: A Phenomenological, Hermeneutic, Imaginal Study, Denise M. Mahone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a qualitative study that used an innovative, phenomenological, hermeneutic, imaginal method to explore the implicit, embodied, and imaginal dimensions of three women's lived experiences of perinatal loss and its aftermath. The study has a dual, but overlapping, focus on a holistic elaboration of women's lived experience of perinatal loss that includes these less articulated dimensions of experience, as well as a focus on the process and implications of the innovative method itself as a research approach. Findings are presented accordingly, addressing both new understandings about the lived phenomenon of miscarriage, and foregrounding the working method through which those …

The Development Of An International Sport Federation: An Examination Of The International Golf Federations' Association With The Modern Olympic Movement, Michael A. Ayotte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2003, the World Amateur Golf Council (WAGC) changed its name to the International Golf Federation (IGF), thereby taking the first step in allowing golf to return to the Olympic Programme in 2009. The purpose of this study was to analyze what, if any, were the influences on the IGF as it went from creation, to development, to subsequent re-instatement on the Olympic Programme in the span of six years. Through interviews and document analysis, the primary source of influence came from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during this process. In addition, the IGF was influenced by the International Tennis …

Shaping And Being Shaped: Examining Women's Tackle Football In Canada, Katrina Krawec Jan 2014

Shaping And Being Shaped: Examining Women's Tackle Football In Canada, Katrina Krawec

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I explored how Canadian female football players were shaping football and being shaped by their participation in the sport using a duality of structure framework. Through ten semi-structured interviews with two administrators and four players in the Western Women's Canadian Football League (WWCFL) and four players in the Legends Football League (LFL) Canada, I examined the leagues' structures and participants' experiences in their leagues. I also analyzed media representations in 230 newspaper articles. Results indicated that the leagues' divergent purposes as well as hegemonic understandings of football differently shaped their structures and consequently players' experiences and media representations. The WWCFL's …

Environmental Sustainability Of Sporting Events In Local Communities: Assessing The Ecological Footprint Of The 2013 International Children's Games, Andrew Bakos Jan 2014

Environmental Sustainability Of Sporting Events In Local Communities: Assessing The Ecological Footprint Of The 2013 International Children's Games, Andrew Bakos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sport management literature regarding the environmental sustainability (ES) of sport events has been predominately focused on the environmental consequences of staging major events. As a result, there is little research concerned with the environmental impacts of small-scale events on host communities. The primary objective of this study was to calculate the Ecological Footprint (EF) of the 2013 International Children's Games (ICG). Developed in the early 1990s by Wackernagel and Rees, the EF is an analysis tool that measures the resource consumption of a human population within a geographical boundary. The EF of the 2013 ICG was estimated through the creation …

The Metaphor Interpretation Test: Cognitive Processes Involved And Age Group Differences In Performance, Sam Iskandar Jan 2014

The Metaphor Interpretation Test: Cognitive Processes Involved And Age Group Differences In Performance, Sam Iskandar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is well known that aging affects fluid cognitive processes while leaving crystallized processes largely intact. When it comes to language abilities, figurative language tends to be more associated with fluid abilities and literal language with more crystallized abilities. Fluid abilities involve short-term storage of information and mental manipulation, which are associated with metaphor interpretation. Eighty participants (40 adults over fifty years old, and 40 young adults) completed the Metaphor Interpretation Test (Iskandar & Baird, 2013). The test includes 17 items chosen from a list of metaphors by Katz et al. (1988). Answers were coded as abstract complete (AC), abstract …

Hiv Discourse And Prevention Practices: A Case Study Of Professional And Entrepreneurial Women In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Neema William Jangu Jan 2014

Hiv Discourse And Prevention Practices: A Case Study Of Professional And Entrepreneurial Women In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Neema William Jangu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dominant HIV discourse has identified poverty, lack of education and lack of gender power as primary sites for women's vulnerability. This presents women as a homogenous population. This study focuses on Professional and Entrepreneurial Women (PEW) who have at least a post-secondary education and are professionally employed and/or engaged in medium skilled entrepreneurial activities. The study suggests that PEW are women who have an education, well-paying jobs by local standards, and power. Yet their rates of HIV infection are higher than women who are uneducated and poor. An intersectional postcolonial feminist approach is employed to examine: (a) the dominant …

Sexual Citizenship On The Autism Spectrum, Jessica Penwell Barnett Jan 2014

Sexual Citizenship On The Autism Spectrum, Jessica Penwell Barnett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Work on sexual citizenship, or the imbrication of citizenship and sexuality, has traditionally focused on the role of heteronormativity in social organization and the impacts of that organization on the lives of LGBTQ persons. Little work has examined the utility of this framework for understanding the experiences and positioning of persons with cognitive (dis)abilities, though they too have a long history of sexual oppression and civic disenfranchisement. In addition, few studies have empirically investigated the sexual and gender identities or intimate lives of this population. This study sought to fill these gaps in basic and theoretical understanding through in-depth, Internet …

Designing And Implementing A Hospital Environmental Management Framework, Taylor Purdy Aug 2013

Designing And Implementing A Hospital Environmental Management Framework, Taylor Purdy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern Canadian hospitals are large generators of landfilled waste. However, much of the waste disposed of by hospitals is divertible. A Hospital Environmental Management Framework (HEMF) was designed and implemented in a local hospital in an effort to control the organization's landfilled waste and improve environmental performance. Environmental issues are gaining awareness among businesses in other sectors, but are not commonly addressed in hospitals, where patient care takes priority over the environment. While specific, recommended waste reduction initiatives tailored to hospital operations have been widely published, information on how to implement these initiatives is lacking. The results from this research …

How Do We Know What Emotion To Show: The Influence Of Culture And Relational Context On Display Rules In The Workplace, Joanna M. Kraft Jan 2013

How Do We Know What Emotion To Show: The Influence Of Culture And Relational Context On Display Rules In The Workplace, Joanna M. Kraft

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Display rules are an important and often overlooked aspect of emotional labour, a process which occurs when how we regulate and display our emotion is based on rules created by the organization. Only a limited number of studies have examined display rules within this context (Diefendorff & Greguras, 2009; Grosserand & Diefendorff, 2005; Gullekson & Vancouver, 2010; Mann, 2007). The current study examined display rules on both a part-time and full-time sample to examine how these rules may change across discrete emotions, work specific targets (e.g., internal customers such as supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates; and external customers or clients), and …

Cultural Experience, Possible Selves And Subjective Well-Being Among Anishnaabe Youth, Graham G. Trull

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aboriginal youth in Canada face a number of economic, health and social challenges, while being one of the fastest-growing segments of the country's population. Researchers have suggested that involvement in positive cultural experiences can be beneficial to the well-being of these youth. However, past research has not defined the types of cultural experience that are most impactful, or the areas of well-being that are affected. As well, no research has investigated the role that cultural experience may have on the views of the future among Aboriginal youth, or how these views may impact well-being. Working together with Walpole Island First …

Automobility And The Social Construction Of Longboarding In The District Of North Vancouver, Douglas Doey Jan 2013

Automobility And The Social Construction Of Longboarding In The District Of North Vancouver, Douglas Doey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Longboarding has become increasingly popular in recent years in Canada and its practice on public streets has lead to serious injuries, including fatalities and a highly contested debate about its legitimacy on public roads. Using a case study within a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework, this paper analyzes a series of debates about longboarding that took place during city council meetings in a community in British Columbia, Canada. The critical study of automobility - our social and cultural predisposition to the car as mobility - is adopted to consider how it constructs longboarding within these public policy debates. The results …

Voices From Liminal Spaces: Narratives Of Unacknowledged Rape, Dusty Jane Johnstone Jan 2013

Voices From Liminal Spaces: Narratives Of Unacknowledged Rape, Dusty Jane Johnstone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The phenomena of unacknowledged rape has been well documented in the empirical literature on sexual assault, and it has been found that a substantial number of women who have experiences that would legally constitute rape or sexual assault choose not to name it as such. The purpose of this investigation was to determine how women who have not acknowledged discuss their experiences in the absence of the labels of rape and sexual assault, and also to examine what influences how they do conceptualize their coercive experiences. Interviews were conducted with ten women from the University of Windsor who reported experiences …

The Relationship Between Self-Rated Athlete Leadership Characteristics, Self-Construal, And Team Cohesion, Michelle M. Peters Jan 2013

The Relationship Between Self-Rated Athlete Leadership Characteristics, Self-Construal, And Team Cohesion, Michelle M. Peters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of cohesion in the study of sport teams has long been recognized by group dynamics researchers (e.g., Brawley, Carron, & Widmeyer, 1987). However, drawing on the Conceptual Framework of Cohesion in Sport (Carron, 1982), many antecedents of cohesion have yet to be explored in detail. Therefore, the current study focused on two of the antecedent factors from Carron's framework. Specifically, this study examined the relationship concerning athlete leadership and self-construal in relation to team cohesion. Athletes ( N = 278) from a variety of varsity level sport teams competing within the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Association participated in …

The purpose of this study is to explore how Aboriginal peoples and knowledges have been and continue to be portrayed through visual texts in children's picture books. This study examines children's books that were published from 1960 through to 2010. This exploration is important as students and educators interact with these texts in their daily lives both inside and outside of school. Drawing from a critical literacy framework, a critical text analysis is used to gain insight into representations of Aboriginal and First Nations people in children's books. While critical literacy practice is a key component in education today, there …

Tense Collaborations And Exchange Interrupted: Gendered Participation In Ecological Agriculture Projects In Post-Neoliberal(?) Bolivia, Jenny J. Cockburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A Bolivian development NGO's effort to increase the scope and value of ecological agriculture, agrobiodiversity and food sovereignty in its work with marginalized farming communities in Norte de Potosí, shares these concerns with the Bolivian State. Yet tensions run high between applying neoliberal frameworks to 'empower' farmers and resisting neoliberal approaches to strengthen Bolivia's sovereignty vis-à-vis the global North. Despite a significant backlash, neoliberalism continues to complicate sustainable development, participatory ideals and local/scientific knowledges, by both facilitating and challenging efforts toward collaboration. This becomes most clear when examined through the lens of gender. To analyze this process, the conceptual framework …

Transgressive Definitions: Kimberly Nixon And The Sociological Effects Of Language Imprecision, Meaghan Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1995 Kimberly Nixon, a transsexual woman, attempted to become a peer counsellor at Vancouver Rape Relief Society. Based on that organization's restrictive definition of the term `woman,' she was denied this opportunity based on her previous male identity. This thesis looks at the use of language in identity and category construction, using the Nixon case to ground theoretical work. It also uses the concept of vagueness to investigate the nature of categorical boundaries, and queer theory to propose possible solutions to problems of identity labelling.

Governing The Drinking Driver: A Genealogical Analysis Of Canadian Impaired-Driving Programmes, Rhys Steckle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1980's impaired driving behaviour has gained increased attention in the public sphere. Recently, the provincial government of Ontario has passed new measures designed to control this behaviour. By drawing on Ericson's (2007) analytic of uncertainty this thesis focusses on how risk and uncertainty have shaped the Ontario government's efforts to control impaired driving behaviour in manners that undermine the traditional "principles, standards and procedures" (Ericson, 2007: 30) of law. Through a Foucaultian genealogical analysis of both governmental and non-governmental documents pertaining to recent impaired driving control efforts including; the Road Safety Act, sobriety checkpoints, and report impaired driver …

Social Activism Through Social Media: The Case Of Child Soldiering In The Global Context, Mary Girges

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The increased popularity of social networking among youth today has given rise to the potential for social activism through social media. Using the Social Constructionist perspective, this thesis examines how three popular Facebook pages construct the `problem' of child soldiering. In particular, these Facebook pages made use of text, images, and links that invited members to cast negative judgment on the issue of child soldiering, which was further enhanced by connecting this problem to other issues plaguing children, such as poverty and lack of education. Moreover, techniques used to raise awareness and promote activism were primarily accomplished by providing images …
