This dissertation discusses the life and music of the Austrian composer Hans Gál (1890–1987). A biography is assembled from a number of sources, but primarily from the writing of his daughter, Eva Fox-Gál, and the composer’s wartime diary. A summation of Gál’s philosophy of life and music is assembled from the composer’s own writings—primarily those about past composers who had a great deal of influence on Gál. Gál’s Suite for Violoncello Solo is then extensively analyzed for form, harmony, melody, and other musical aspects to evaluate Gál as a composer for the cello, and to better understand his contribution to …

The present thesis seeks to show the influences to my artwork and describe the body of work found in my thesis exhibition, In Context. The role of family and childhood are discussed and related to the work. The feminist writers bell hooks, Jane Tompkins, and Hélène Cixous are cited as influential to the initial exploration of my content. Artists discussed include Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Annette Messager, and Robert Rauschenberg. While there are facts that are known about Claudius Greer Clemmer, there is much that is not known. By most accounts, he was a generous man who grew up during some of the hardest years of the Great Depression, worked to get an education, and had a successful teaching career. Clemmer worked diligently to do what he could to support himself and his family, working at two jobs. The purpose of this thesis is to trace the historical development of autobiographical writing in Kentucky; to analyze the literary and philosophical characteristics of these works and, by this means, to divide these writings into several categories; and, finally, to reveal by an interpretation of these autobiographies, certain cultural aspects of Kentucky life and society. As thus stated, the intentions of this study are several; but, actually, all these aims are inseparably related part. of a single general problem which is to investigate Kentucky autobiographical writing as a whole in order to better understand the individual works in that literature.
