The Inheritance Of This Moment: An Exploration Of Temporality, Subjectivity, And Liberation In Non-Dual Contemplative Practice And Psychotherapy, Jeremy Axelrad Dec 2018

The Inheritance Of This Moment: An Exploration Of Temporality, Subjectivity, And Liberation In Non-Dual Contemplative Practice And Psychotherapy, Jeremy Axelrad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation considers the meaning of “present-moment awareness” and its role in psychological healing and transformation. The current conversation around mindfulness, a secularized practice with roots in Buddhist contemplative traditions, has largely unfolded within a dualistic framework in which subject and object are separate from one another as well as from a discrete entity called a moment. While widely appreciated for its capacity to foster well-being and insight, mindfulness as construed above remains disconnected from Buddhist psychology’s non-dualistic view of experience, which radically challenges our ordinary understandings of subjectivity and temporality. In the current project, I sought to explore this …

The Buffering Effect Of Mindfulness Between The Stressors And Perceived Stress In Faith-Based University Students, Amber Glantz Aug 2018

The Buffering Effect Of Mindfulness Between The Stressors And Perceived Stress In Faith-Based University Students, Amber Glantz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of study was to research the buffering effect of mindfulness between the stressors and perceived stress in faith-based university students. Literature suggests that as mindfulness increases, stress decreases. This study attempts to provide information on college students’ perceived stress levels, stressors they face, and mindfulness awareness. A multiple linear regression was conducted to examine the association between perceived stress, stressors, and mindfulness levels. A sample of 91 students in the Spring of 2018 at a faith-based university in Texas were asked to participate in an online survey. Some findings were not congruent with the literature. The results of …

Using Mindfulness Meditation As A Team Building Tool To Enhance Perceptions Of Cohesion, Mindfulness, And Emotional Competence: A Pilot Study, Piotr Adam Piasecki Jul 2018

Using Mindfulness Meditation As A Team Building Tool To Enhance Perceptions Of Cohesion, Mindfulness, And Emotional Competence: A Pilot Study, Piotr Adam Piasecki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the pilot study was two-fold; firstly, to explore the effects of a team-based mindfulness meditation training program on perceptions of cohesion, and, secondly, to increase mindfulness and emotional competence. The participants were 32 female intercollegiate soccer players from two teams. One team was assigned to the mindfulness intervention condition, while the other served as the control condition. Participants completed measures of cohesion, mindfulness, and emotional competence pre- and post-intervention. The eight-week mindfulness meditation training program significantly increased perceptions of social cohesion. However, there were no significant changes for task cohesion, mindfulness, or emotional competence. Taken together, athletes …

Just Breathe: Mindfulness, Self-Regulation, And Cardiac Reactivity, Marta Kadziolka Jul 2018

Just Breathe: Mindfulness, Self-Regulation, And Cardiac Reactivity, Marta Kadziolka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dispositional mindfulness is the non-judgmental moment-to-moment awareness of transient thoughts, feelings, and sensations as they arise in the attentional field (Kabat-Zinn, 1990). This phenomenon has been a primary element of various clinical interventions for many years. However, little is known about the active ingredients of mindfulness that promote emotional self-regulation and coping. The aim of this dissertation was to address this gap through three related studies which utilized an undergraduate sample. The first study used a laboratory protocol that required participants to perform several mildly stressful tasks related to emotional recall, mindful breathing, and a recovery condition. The hypothesis that …

OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of mothers in treatment for opioid use disorder, including depression and adverse childhood experiences, and to evaluate the characteristics associated with participation in a mindfulness intervention. Lastly, …

Professional Identity, Commitment, And Intent To Persist: The Facilitative Role Of Mindfulness For Pre-Service Teachers, Sean Holden Jan 2018

Professional Identity, Commitment, And Intent To Persist: The Facilitative Role Of Mindfulness For Pre-Service Teachers, Sean Holden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have long observed issues with teacher retention, particularly early in ones career (Ingersoll, 2003; Gray & Taie, 2015). In order to address this issue, many researchers have investigated retention by exploring the development of ones perceptions and beliefs about the profession. Encompassing this trend, interest has been placed on teachers professional identity, a comprehensive construct acknowledging the influence of personal factors and internalized external experience (Schaefer et al., 2014). Based in this perspective, Hong (2010) proposed that ones beliefs about teaching and perceptions of self-efficacy, value, empowerment, burnout, and commitment are particularly salient in the decision to remain in …

The Mediation Of Perfectionism And Rumination On Mindfulness And Burnout In Collegiate Athletes, Nicholas S. Mcmillen Jan 2018

The Mediation Of Perfectionism And Rumination On Mindfulness And Burnout In Collegiate Athletes, Nicholas S. Mcmillen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several positive and negative sport-related experiences can occur throughout an athlete’s career, which can affect the continuation or termination of said career. Although research has associated sport participation with positive outcomes (e.g., increases in motivation, autonomy), there are also negative sport-related outcomes such as burnout (Akhrem & Gazdowska, 2016; Garcia, 2015). Specifically, burnout has been identified as a multidimensional construct that includes three dimensions. Furthermore, mindfulness has been studied to minimize the risk of experiencing burnout (Kabat-Zinn, 2003). While several studies have examined mediators between mindfulness and burnout, there has been a dearth of research on perfectionism and rumination as …
