Testing Location Memory For Threatening And Nonthreatening Stimuli : Implications For Evolutionary Psychological Theorizing., Ryan Patrick Hacklander
Testing Location Memory For Threatening And Nonthreatening Stimuli : Implications For Evolutionary Psychological Theorizing., Ryan Patrick Hacklander
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Humans respond to the presence of threatening stimuli more rapidly than nonthreatening stimuli, a trait that some authors believe humans have been selected for. Based on this finding, it has been proposed that humans should also have superior location memory for threatening stimuli, possibly depending on whether stimuli have ancestral (e.g., snakes) or modern (e.g., guns) ecological relevance. This is herein called the Superior Location Memory for Threatening Stimuli (SLMTS) hypothesis. Some authors believe that humans possess a domain-specific adaptation that gives rise to the hypothesized memory advantage for threatening stimuli. The primary aim of this dissertation is to test …
Deconstructing Saccades : Identifying The Components Of Saccades That Produce Saccade-Induced Retrieval Enhancement., James Matthew Edlin
Deconstructing Saccades : Identifying The Components Of Saccades That Produce Saccade-Induced Retrieval Enhancement., James Matthew Edlin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Multiple studies have found that performing repetitive saccades for 30 s improves subsequent memory retrieval. Although the effect is well established, the mechanism by which saccades affect retrieval is currently unknown. Saccade-induced retrieval enhancement (SIRE) has been hypothesized to be a product of increasing: interaction between the hemispheres, interaction within the hemispheres, or attentional control. It is currently unknown which components of the saccade activity are necessary to produce SIRE. The saccade activity in previous SIRE research is similar to an orienting activity that produces predictive saccades. Predictive saccades begin as exogenous orienting to a rhythmically alternating target. After a …
Anthropomorphism Appeals: Influencing Consumer Attitudes And Memory Through Humanlike Presentation, Phillip Michael Hart
Anthropomorphism Appeals: Influencing Consumer Attitudes And Memory Through Humanlike Presentation, Phillip Michael Hart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Advertisements in which a good or service is portrayed as humanlike in one or more ways (i.e., anthropomorphism appeals) are commonplace, yet scarecely investigated. In this state, managers using anthropomophism appeals are left to wager pomotional budgets without knowledge of the impact these appeals have on viewers or the factors most frequently influencing these appeals. The present study addresses this limitation by evaluating the advertising effectiveness of anthropomorphism appeals and the roles of contextual (product type and product category) and individual (loneliness and product knowledge) factors. Using an online panel service, three experiments evaluated the effectiveness of anthropomorphism appeals at …
Shadowlands, Kimberly Riner
Shadowlands, Kimberly Riner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Shadowlands is a reflection on loss. By focusing on those who are left behind after a loss, I am able to explore the range of reactions associated with grief. The artwork displayed in Shadowlands is an intuitive response to these experiences. It has been informed by research of cultural norms associated with mourning. By investigating specific ceremonies, rituals and interactions, I construct objects and installations that bridge the line between memory and memorial.
Home Sweet Home: An Infinite Grid Of Memory And Repressed Abuse Trauma, Melissa Bush
Home Sweet Home: An Infinite Grid Of Memory And Repressed Abuse Trauma, Melissa Bush
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Incorporating traditional craft mediums of crochet and embroidery, I use digital technology to experiment with wording to graphically represent my abuse trauma. Due to the severity of the subject matter and the work ethic I employ in my art practice, using my hands and being completely involved is a form of masochistic pleasure. My process takes on a Sisyphean approach of penance for the sins of others in my work. During my studio practice, my process reaches a meditative state where my mind is clear and free of the burden. Once I've completed a panel of trauma, the burden is …
Captain John Smith And American Identity: Evolutions Of Constructed Narratives And Myths In The 20th And 21st Centuries, Joseph Corbett
Captain John Smith And American Identity: Evolutions Of Constructed Narratives And Myths In The 20th And 21st Centuries, Joseph Corbett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Historical narratives and anecdotes concerning Captain John Smith have been told and retold throughout the entire history the United States of America, and they have proved to be sacred, influential, and contested elements in the construction of the individual, sectional, regional, and national identity of many. In this thesis, I first outline some of the history of how narratives and discourses surrounding Captain John Smith were directly connected with the identity of many Americans during the 18th and 19th century, especially Virginians and Southerners. Then I outline how these narratives and discourses from the 18th and 19th centuries have continued …
Effect Of Acupuncture On Menopausal Memory Changes In Women With Breast Cancer, Elizabeth Cole Collins
Effect Of Acupuncture On Menopausal Memory Changes In Women With Breast Cancer, Elizabeth Cole Collins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Menopausal symptoms are a concern for peri- and postmenopausal women, and for women who have been treated for breast cancer. Changes in memory are a commonly reported menopausal symptom which can interfere with daily activities, occurring in women who experience natural menopause as well as in women who have an abrupt onset of menopause following treatment for breast cancer. Menopause hormone therapy may be contraindicated or unacceptable for many women, reinforcing the need for well-tolerated, non-hormonal treatments for menopausal symptoms. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of acupuncture to improve the menopausal symptom of memory changes …
Grounding The Counterculture: Post-Modernism, The Back-To-The-Land Movement, And Authentic Enviroments Of Memory, Jonathan Bowdler
Grounding The Counterculture: Post-Modernism, The Back-To-The-Land Movement, And Authentic Enviroments Of Memory, Jonathan Bowdler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will explore the regional and cultural dimensions of the Back-to-the-Land movement during the 1970s in an effort to move scholarship away from applying theoretical constructs such as post-modernism to diverse social movements. By drawing on the three main Back-to-the-Land publications, namely the Whole Earth Catalog, Mother Earth News, and the Foxfire books, this paper will demonstrate the varying impulses and regional nuances of the movement as well as the continuity and discontinuity of the back-to-nature tradition in America. Particular emphasis will be placed on the ways in which the Southern homesteading experience has been masked within the scholarship …
The Phenomenological Experience Of Narrative Transportation, William Buchanan
The Phenomenological Experience Of Narrative Transportation, William Buchanan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has attempted to identify consequences of mental transportation into narrative worlds. While scales have been developed and validated to measure readers' levels of transportation, the objective quantification has left researchers at a descriptive disadvantage for the full range of qualitative responses to this phenomenon. This study presents a qualitative method of inquiry designed to get at the experience of narrative transportation as it is lived: the phenomenological interview. Interview transcripts were inductively analyzed for common themes that indicate intersubjective features of narrative experience. Four main themes were identified, which were composed of 22 base-level experiences reported by participants. …
