The Sacrament Of Violence: Myth And War In C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy, Tanya Engelhardt Jan 2012

The Sacrament Of Violence: Myth And War In C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy, Tanya Engelhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My primary aim for this study is to illuminate the Ransom trilogy's inherent psychological and spiritual themes, as well as demonstrate how these themes clarify Lewis's philosophical and political goals for the text. Specifically, by investigating Lewis's mythic imagery and suffering motifs in light of psychoanalytic and theological literary criticisms, I elucidate the reasoning behind Lewis's unique—and at times, horrific—portrayal of fear, violence, and death. I also investigate how Lewis integrates his theology with the horrors of personal and intrapersonal suffering, as well as how he utilizes imagination and myth to explicate the practical (or political) implications of his theodicy. …

Styles, Qualities, And Sexual Behavior In Young People's Romantic Relationships: A Longitudinal Examination Of Within-Person And Between-Person Effects, Meredith Cerian Joppa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The prevalence of early sexual behavior places many youth at risk for unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. The purpose of this study is to examine the interplay among romantic styles, relationship qualities, and sexual behavior at both the within-person and between-person levels. Frequencies of light nongenital, heavy nongenital, and genital sexual behavior were examined as well as risky sexual behavior. 200 young people from a community sample were assessed at six time points from ages 15 through 21. Avoidant styles were associated with less frequent sexual behavior at both within- and between-person levels, and with more risky …

Homework Adherence In Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy For Adolescent Depression, Nathaniel John Jungbluth Jan 2012

Homework Adherence In Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy For Adolescent Depression, Nathaniel John Jungbluth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Homework is a defining component of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), however, few studies have examined homework adherence in youth CBT. Homework adherence was coded from audiotapes of school-based CBT for 50 depressed adolescents and evaluated as a predictor of proximal and distal treatment outcomes. Six therapist behaviors hypothesized to promote homework adherence were also coded from audiotapes of early sessions and examined in relation to subsequent homework adherence. Results showed no significant associations between client homework adherence and outcomes. Results also revealed several therapist behaviors to be associated with homework adherence in the context of planned moderator analyses. Adolescents considered at …

Responses To Domestic Violence Public Service Ads: Memory, Attitudes, Affect, And Individual Differences, Courtney Elizabeth Welton-Mitchell Jan 2012

Responses To Domestic Violence Public Service Ads: Memory, Attitudes, Affect, And Individual Differences, Courtney Elizabeth Welton-Mitchell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Public service ads (PSAs) are an increasingly visible part of efforts to decrease the occurrence and consequences of domestic violence. Like other advertising, domestic violence PSAs are designed to grab attention, influence attitudes, and enhance memory for ad content. Over the years, images in domestic violence PSAs have changed substantially; agencies have started using pictures that generate emotions - either vivid negative images (bruised faces or body parts), or positive images (smiling faces) that contrast with the negative text. It is not clear, however, how different types of ad images influence memory for the message and attitudes about domestic violence, …

The Role Of Attachment In Young Adults' Use Of Facebook For Coping, Jaime Michelle Arseneault Jan 2012

The Role Of Attachment In Young Adults' Use Of Facebook For Coping, Jaime Michelle Arseneault

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Internet has become integrated into the daily lives of adolescents and young adults, and researchers have begun to investigate the predictors, correlates, and consequences of Internet use. Research has suggested that individuals with social strengths and individuals with social weaknesses both may benefit from using the Internet to cope. The purpose of this study was to explore the relations among attachment, offline coping, online coping, and adjustment, as well as to evaluate whether the rich-get-richer or social compensation hypotheses of Internet use explained these relations. Undergraduate students aged 17 to 25 years ( N = 296) completed online measures …

Racial Identity, Family, And Psychological Adjustment In Asian-White Biracial Young Adults, Vanessa Chong Jan 2012

Racial Identity, Family, And Psychological Adjustment In Asian-White Biracial Young Adults, Vanessa Chong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to examine the interrelationships among biracial identity, family, and psychological adjustment variables in biracial young adults. A mixed methods design was used to investigate a large sample (N=356) of Asian-White biracial young adults (aged 18-30) from Canada and the United States. This study was based on the Multiracial Heritage and Personal Affiliation (M-HAPA) Model of biracial identity, which incorporates the integrated, singular, and marginal identity orientations and posits identity fluidity and dominance (Choi-Misailidis, 2004). Additional variables included family relationship quality, two aspects of racial-ethnic socialization (cultural socialization and preparation for bias), and four …

Emotional Processing In An Expressive Writing Task On Trauma , Shawn J. Harrington Jan 2012

Emotional Processing In An Expressive Writing Task On Trauma , Shawn J. Harrington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study took a different approach to studying expressive writing by examining the emotional processes by which it confers its benefits. An archival sample of 110 undergraduates, who suffered traumas, were instructed to write based on differing theories of emotional processing. Participant narratives were coded for depth of emotional processing and the presence of key emotions. Outcome was assessed at baseline and four weeks following writing. Conditions differed in their presence of key emotions (χ 2 [4, N = 110] = 39.160, p <.001), though not as expected. Depth of emotional processing differed as a function of condition and writing session, F (4,105) = 6.056, p <.001. Depth of emotional processing was negatively correlated with anxiety, r (107) = -.209. The results suggest that writing instructions are not always adhered to, writing instructions might differentially promote emotional processing over time, and promoting deepened emotional processing might facilitate reductions in anxiety.

Links Among Maternal Emotion Socialization, And Children's Emotional Competence And Social Behaviour, Sara Eileen O'Neil Woods Jan 2012

Links Among Maternal Emotion Socialization, And Children's Emotional Competence And Social Behaviour, Sara Eileen O'Neil Woods

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Young children's prosocial behaviour has been linked with later social and academic competence; whereas aggression in early childhood is predictive of later psychopathology, academic problems, and crime. In a sample of 136 mother-child pairs, associations among maternal emotion socialization, emotional competence, social behaviour, and perceived social acceptance were explored. Results revealed that mothers' expressive encouragement responses and children's emotion regulation skills predicted children's prosocial behaviour. In addition, children's prosocial behaviour was positively associated with their perceived peer acceptance. Children's emotion regulation problems were found to completely mediate the association between mothers' distress reactions and children's parent-reported physical aggression, with higher …

Motivation And Feedback Influencing Change In The Goal-Setting Process , Lisa Plant Jan 2012

Motivation And Feedback Influencing Change In The Goal-Setting Process , Lisa Plant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the influence of performance appraisal feedback (i.e., developmental, evaluative, or no feedback) on task specific motivation and the types of goals (i.e., process, outcome, new and more challenging) participants subsequently set. University students ( N = 159) took part in a class schedule-making task developed by Earley, 1985. Using two 3 (feedback) X 4 (time) mixed repeated measures design Analyses of Covariance (ANCOVAs) with task specific motivation as the dependent variable (analysis 1: intrinsic, analysis 2: extrinsic) and general motivation as covariates (analysis 1: intrinsic, analysis 2: extrinsic) it was found that participants given developmental feedback experienced …

Perceptions Of Severity And The Role Of Coping In University Students' Experiences With Online Partner Aggression Victimization, Mary G. Simmering Mcdonald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the frequency with which individuals are currently communicating via forms of technology and the unique features of online communication (i.e., lack of verbal and nonverbal cues, ability to send messages with greater frequency, opportunity to make personal information public, etc.), few studies have considered individuals' perceptions of and experiences with online partner aggression victimization. Through quantitative and qualitative methods, the present research investigated university students' ( N = 349; 82.1% female) experiences of online partner aggression victimization occurring via email, instant messaging, and social networking sites and their perceptions of severity of the aggressive acts. In addition, information was …

Aggressive Signalling Strategies In Black-Capped Chickadee Territorial Vocal Interactions/Stratégies Aggressive De Signalisation Dans Les Interactions Vocales Du Territoire En Mésange À Tête Noire., Tyne Marie Baker Jan 2012

Aggressive Signalling Strategies In Black-Capped Chickadee Territorial Vocal Interactions/Stratégies Aggressive De Signalisation Dans Les Interactions Vocales Du Territoire En Mésange À Tête Noire., Tyne Marie Baker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The traditional view of birdsong indicates that it functions in territory defence and mate attraction. Recent literature focuses on aggressive signalling between males during territorial song contests. Using a protocol that simulates territorial intruders with song playback and a taxidermic model, four previous studies showed that quiet song predicts attack in several species. Using this protocol, I examined aggressive signals in black-capped chickadees, Poecile atricapillus . I explored which signals predict attack on a taxidermic mount, a potential graded signalling system, and how individual rank affects aggressive signalling. I found song rate and gargle calling predict attack in chickadees. Also, …

Physiological Reactions To Uncanny Stimuli: Substantiation Of Self-Assessment And Individual Perception, Tatiana Ballion Jan 2012

Physiological Reactions To Uncanny Stimuli: Substantiation Of Self-Assessment And Individual Perception, Tatiana Ballion

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is abundant anecdotal evidence substantiating Mori’s initial observation of the "uncanny valley", a point at which human response to non-human entities drops sharply with respect to comfort (Mori, 1970), and the construct itself has a long-standing history in both Robotics and Psychology. Currently, many fields such as design, training, entertainment, and education make use of heuristic approaches to accommodate the anticipated needs of the user/consumer/audience in certain important aspects. This is due to the lack of empirical substantiation or, in some cases, the impossibility of rigorous quantification; one such area is with respect to the user’s experience of uncanniness, …

Response Of Round Gobies, Neogobius Melanostomus, To Conspecific Sounds, Lisa Isabella-Valenzi Jan 2012

Response Of Round Gobies, Neogobius Melanostomus, To Conspecific Sounds, Lisa Isabella-Valenzi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A useful model group to examine reproductive plasticity in acoustic responsiveness is the family Gobiidae. Male round gobies Neogobius melanostomus emit calls and females respond to these calls with high specificity. The current study investigates differential attraction between reproductive morphologies of the goby to conspecific calls and explores the use of calls to develop a bioacoustic trap. Behavioural responsiveness to conspecific calls was tested using playback experiments in the lab and field. Females showed a strong attraction to the grunt call in both the lab and field, while nonreproductive and sneaker males preferred the drum call in the lab, but …

It's All In How You See It: Predicting Parents' Treatment Selection For Their Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Brianne Drouillard Jan 2012

It's All In How You See It: Predicting Parents' Treatment Selection For Their Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Brianne Drouillard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to identify the relations between nine dimensions of parents' cognitive representations of ASD, their acceptance of their children's ASD, and their treatment selection for their children with ASD. Parents of children with ASD aged 21 years and younger ( N = 124) completed an online survey, with 10 of those parents completing telephone follow-up interviews. Logistic regression analyses revealed that stronger beliefs in personal control over one's child's ASD were associated with selection of medication-based treatments, while stronger beliefs in external causes of ASD were associated with selection of metabolic treatments. Correlation analyses …

The present study investigates the cognitive, affective, and physiological aspects of alexithymia. Verbal fluency measures (phonemic, semantic, Emotion Word Fluency Test; EWFT) were administered to 103 undergraduate students. Heart rate and skin conductance were measured during two baseline periods and during the administration of the performance measures. In a subset of participants (N = 53), additional measures of heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure were taken. Physiological arousal during a recovery period that followed the verbal fluency tasks was also measured in this subset. Degree of alexithymic traits in these participants was measured using the TAS-20. Due to the …

Variability Of Graphomotor Task Performance In Adults With Adhd: A Kinematic Approach, Thomas Duda Jan 2012

Variability Of Graphomotor Task Performance In Adults With Adhd: A Kinematic Approach, Thomas Duda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention and/or a combination of hyperactivity and impulsivity. Motor problems, including poor graphomotor skills, are frequently found in those with ADHD and have been noted to be undertreated. Variability of performance within several domains has also been indicated as a hallmark of ADHD. The present study sought to 1) determine whether the variability of performance observed in other psychological domains in those diagnosed with ADHD manifests within kinematic variables of graphomotor output and 2) determine whether a novel writing task differentially affects the graphomotor output of adults diagnosed …

Multiple Achromatic Plumage Signals Of Male Quality In The Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax Nivalis), Sarah Guindre-Parker Jan 2012

Multiple Achromatic Plumage Signals Of Male Quality In The Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax Nivalis), Sarah Guindre-Parker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although males can produce many ornaments, the evolution of multiple ornaments is not well understood. We investigated achromatic plumage traits in the context of multiple ornaments in Arctic-breeding snow buntings ( Plectrophenax nivalis ). We examined whether multiple ornaments: are providing multiple messages, are redundant, are unreliable signals or are aimed at different receivers. We measured plumage reflectance and pigmentation patterns that are differentially, but conspicuously advertised during male inter- and intra-sexual displays. Our results indicate that although several signals are redundant, different body regions appear aimed at different receivers. The wings of males--displayed during courtship--indicate male expected reproductive performance. …

Comparing Two Models Of Employee Engagement: An Examination Of Antecedents And Outcome Variables, Neli Remo Jan 2012

Comparing Two Models Of Employee Engagement: An Examination Of Antecedents And Outcome Variables, Neli Remo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Employee engagement has been a popular concept among business practitioners, while in the academic literature, the concept remains relatively new. In order to compete effectively, companies must inspire employees to apply their full capabilities to their jobs and perform at a top level. Employees who are energetic and dedicated to their work can make a true difference for companies that want to create a highly efficient and productive organization (Bakker &Leiter, 2010). Given that practical interest in work engagement has surpassed the available research evidence, questions such as what impacts employee engagement and how it benefits individuals and organizations, still …

Judgments Of Arrest And Attitudes Toward Women's Self-Defence In Situations Of Intimate Partner Violence, Mia Sisic Jan 2012

Judgments Of Arrest And Attitudes Toward Women's Self-Defence In Situations Of Intimate Partner Violence, Mia Sisic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent changes in police enforcement of the policy of mandatory arrest in heterosexual domestic violence situations have resulted in increased rates of women being arrested for assault even though their violence was in self-defence. Fifty-five university students participated in the online pilot study (phase 1) examining the perceptions of stereotypic and non-stereotypic female self-defence. The most (scratching) and least stereotypic (use of a kitchen knife) behaviours were then inserted into scenarios in the main study. Forty-five potential police officers from university and college settings participated online in the main study (phase 2) which examined attitudes and reactions to the victim, …

The Relationship Between The Congruency In Perceptions Of Coach Leadership Behaviours And Perceptions Of Cohesion And Performance, Anthony G. Vander Laan Jan 2012

The Relationship Between The Congruency In Perceptions Of Coach Leadership Behaviours And Perceptions Of Cohesion And Performance, Anthony G. Vander Laan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between perceptual congruency of coaching leadership and perceptions of cohesion and performance. Sixty coaches and 199 athletes responded to two leadership inventories: the Differentiated Transformational Leadership Inventory (DTLI; Callow et al., 2009) measuring transformational leadership and the Leadership Scale for Sports (LSS; Chelladurai &Saleh, 1980) measuring transactional leadership. Additionally, athletes indicated perceptions of cohesion by completing the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ; Carron et al., 1985) and perceptions of personal performance through a self-report performance measure (Spalding, 2010). Results indicated that over-evaluative athletes (i.e., those who rated the coach favourably) …

Does The Depth Of Client Experiencing Predict Good Psychotherapy Outcomes? A Meta-Analysis Of Treatment Outcomes , Nikita Yeryomenko Jan 2012

Does The Depth Of Client Experiencing Predict Good Psychotherapy Outcomes? A Meta-Analysis Of Treatment Outcomes , Nikita Yeryomenko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Experiencing Scale (EXP), a measure of client's emotional processing, is often used in psychotherapy process research. While researchers agree that it predicts treatment outcomes, this relationship has not been systematically studied. This meta-analysis quantified the relationship between EXP and therapy outcomes using a total of 11 studies and 458 clients. Analysis indicated that peak EXP measured during the working phase was the strongest predictor of treatment outcomes, r = .236. Subgroup analyses indicated that working phase effects were moderated by the outcome measure modality. Early phase effects were moderated by the type of treatment and the treatment target. In …

Motivation, Need Support And Need Satisfaction In Youth Soccer Players, Erica Lippitt Jan 2012

Motivation, Need Support And Need Satisfaction In Youth Soccer Players, Erica Lippitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Author's abstract: Physical activity levels and obesity rates vary greatly across ethnic groups in the United States (CDC, 2011). One popular way to increase physical activity levels in youth is through youth sport participation, which may be influenced by athlete motivation. Numerous studies have determined motivation levels in youth sport participants, but very little done in comparing levels across different ethnic groups. Identifying differences in motivation levels based on ethnicity can allow coaches and sport administrators to adjust practices and program setups to increase participation and meet needs of player competence. The purpose of the study was to determine if …
