Sebastien Rale Vs. New England: A Case Study Of Frontier Conflict, Kenneth M. Morrison Jun 1970

Sebastien Rale Vs. New England: A Case Study Of Frontier Conflict, Kenneth M. Morrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Author's original abstract: A study was made of the Jesuit missionary, Sebastien Rale, and his role in New England-New France relations. French and English primary and secondary materials were examined to give the broadest possible view of the man and to place him in historical context.

It was found that Sebastien Rale was not an agent of New France. The conflicting opinions surrounding the mission of Norridgewock and the border war of the 1720's were traced to the problems of Massachusetts-Abnaki relations. Rale's frequent and testy letters to the government of the Bay Colony were blunt reactions to what he …

The Pre-Court Career Of John Marshall Harlan., Thomas L. Owen May 1970

The Pre-Court Career Of John Marshall Harlan., Thomas L. Owen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The thesis deals with the political career of John Marshall Harlan prior to his appointment in 1877 as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. Throughout the majority of those twenty-three active years in Kentucky politics, Harlan was an adamant defender of the slave system, and despite the fact that he had been a strong Unionist during the Civil War, he resisted emancipation of the slaves and opposed every effort to gain civil rights for the blacks once they were freed. When Harlan became a Republican in 1868, he hurriedly reversed himself, and became a consistent advocate of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gout is one of the earliest disease entities to be described in medical writings. Hippocrates noted familial distribution patterns and described its classic symptomatology in the 5th century B.C. Empirical treatment employing colchicine was advocated by Alexander of Tralles in the 5th century A.D. A better understanding of the complex association between clinical manifestations of gout and uric acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism has made rational treatment possible only very recently. Ample experimental and clinical data now available show a definite association between disorders of purine metabolism resulting in hyperuricemia and frequent concomitant hyperlipidemia. A high incidence of both …

Physical Conditioning And Ammonium Carbonate Affecting Blood Ammonium And Swimming Performance Of Dogs, Larry Alan Bjurstrom Jan 1970

Physical Conditioning And Ammonium Carbonate Affecting Blood Ammonium And Swimming Performance Of Dogs, Larry Alan Bjurstrom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ammonia is produced by the working muscle of exercising mammals and cellular metabolic process of resting mammals. Normally relatively minute blood ammonium-nitrogen (BAN) levels are present because mammals have efficient systems for excreting ammonia or converting it to non-toxic end products. Impaired or inadequate detoxification process allow elevated BAN levels with excessive ammonia production. Above normal BAN levels produce deleterious effects which are well known to many research fields. When impaired or inadequate detoxification process occur in an exercising mammal, deterioration of performance is manifested in physical exhaustion and fatigue. Mobilization and enhancement of the KrebsHenseleit urea cycle by addition …

An Experiment On The Effects Of Humidity On Screen-Process Stencils, Thomas R. Bresadola Jan 1970

An Experiment On The Effects Of Humidity On Screen-Process Stencils, Thomas R. Bresadola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quality control is management, it is a way of thinking. To function properly, it cannot be isolated in one section of the plant, but rather it must permeate the entire climate of the plant. Management is control through decision making. Decision making requires accurate and complete information, if errors are to be avoided. The quality of the information on which decisions are based determines the quality of the decisions themselves. Quality may be defined by stating what is acceptable, and what is not acceptable. Quality used in this sense varies greatly from plant to plant. The company printing slogans on …

An Eye-Movement Analysis Of Five Ink Colors Printed On Yellow Stock, Robert Charles Clappsy Jan 1970

An Eye-Movement Analysis Of Five Ink Colors Printed On Yellow Stock, Robert Charles Clappsy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of color combinations of print and paper by commercial printers has increased steadily since 1930. The relation of color-of-print to color-of-background is an important factor to be considered in printing because color does effect legibility. The increased use of color emphasizes the need for scientific knowledge concerning the effect on legibility of various color combinations of print and background. Such scientific knowledge demands relevant research in many areas of color printing. This study will try to determine the effects on eye-movements of various ink colors printed on a controlled yellow stock. This information would be useful to printers …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The spider plant, Chlorophytum elatum R. Br., a member of the family Liliaceae, is a native of South Africa. It has been propagated almost exclusively by vegetative means and it is now grown widely over the world as an ornamental plant. Many studies by other workers have revealed that with only two exceptions all species in the genus Chlorophytum have somatic chromosome numbers that are multiples of seven, ranging from 14 to 56 (c.f. Darlington and Wiley, 1955). Although the chromosome number of Chlorophytum elatum has ·been reported to be 2N = 28 (Sato, 1942; Baldwin and Speese, 1951) information …

Rigidity Of Four-Bolt And Six-Bolt End Plate Connections, Roger William Eastman Jan 1970

Rigidity Of Four-Bolt And Six-Bolt End Plate Connections, Roger William Eastman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A.General The 1969 AISC Specification for Design, Fabrication and Erection states about connections: All, connections, the rigidity of which is essential to the continuity assumed as the basis of the analysis, shall be capable of resisting the moments, shears-and axial loads to which they would be subjected by the full factored loading or any probable partial distribution thereof. The building specifications do not specify types or shapes of connections, only that they shall satisfy the conditions imposed upon them. With the acceptance of plastic design, the need arose for an economical and efficient connection. End plate connections can satisfy these …

Automatic Irrigation : Sensors And System, Herman G. Hamre Jan 1970

Automatic Irrigation : Sensors And System, Herman G. Hamre

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the world in which we live becomes more crowded, the specter of food shortage looms larger. As long as the world population is increasing, the food supply must also be increased to offset predicted shortages. One area under development is the ocean, and federal money is being invested in research on ocean farming techniques. More immediate gain, however, may be obtained by bolstering the already immense capability of the agricultural community. This may be accomplished by increasing the yield of the land under cultivation, or by enabling more land to be cultivated. Irrigation has been used successfully in aiding …

Effect Of Rhythmical Disturbances On Repetitive Assembly Work, Ranganatha Hemmige Jan 1970

Effect Of Rhythmical Disturbances On Repetitive Assembly Work, Ranganatha Hemmige

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The field of industrial engineering has been traditionally based on the desire to produce more goods for less money. This goal has been accomplished by a variety of methods, including improved methods, monetary incentives, and nonmonetary incentives. In the modern industry all of these may be used. Studies to isolate the effects-of such types of incentives frequently, although not exclusively, have been conducted on highly repetitive tasks. This occurs for a number of reasons: 1. The simple task reduces the variability of the output both in quality and quantity. 2. Any given number of cycles will take less time since …

The Effect Of Sodium Hexametaphosphate On The Palatability Of The Freeze-Dried Chicken, Ngoc Hoa Giang Jan 1970

The Effect Of Sodium Hexametaphosphate On The Palatability Of The Freeze-Dried Chicken, Ngoc Hoa Giang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Freeze-drying has been generally regarded as the mildest method known for drying meats, but even this process has caused undesirable changes in meat quality. The texture of rehydrated freeze-dried meat has been found to be tougher and drier than untreated meats. In addition, the meat may have a "woody" texture. Apparently something has occurred during the freeze-dry process that reduced the water-holding capacity of the meat. This has been reflected in the meat's inability to become fully rehydrated. Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHNP) has been used successfully to increase the water-holding capacity of meat and fowl. No study has been conducted to …

Erosion Protection For The Outlets Of Small And Medium Culverts, Robert A. Hipschman Jan 1970

Erosion Protection For The Outlets Of Small And Medium Culverts, Robert A. Hipschman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development of modern roadways has been regarded as one of the most outstanding accomplishments of the past generation. It has created a society of greater mobility than any of its ancestors. The massive stretches of freeways, expressways, and turnpikes are omnipresent, testifying to a modernization of man that was inconceivable fifty years ago. The design of such trafficways was of no mere coincidence. Millions of dollars and man-hours have been expended on the creation of this vast transportation complex. Continual improvements and new ideas have evolved the highway from rugged wagon trails to its present place of eminence. Included …

The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones Jan 1970

The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Family life education includes the total education for living in families. The main emphasis of all home economics or homemaking education is life as it is lived within the home and family. Some aspects of home economics are usually included in the curriculum at all age levels from early childhood through secondary education. Family life in America has changed over the years. Such factors as family mobility, a greater amount of leisure time, an increase in early marriages, and more mothers employed outside the home indicate the need for education in family living. Moreover, currently fewer youngsters learn about homemaking …

Isolation An Characterization Of The Virus Of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (Ehd) Of Deer, Hsing Kuei Liu Jan 1970

Isolation An Characterization Of The Virus Of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (Ehd) Of Deer, Hsing Kuei Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The name "epizootic hemorrhagic disease" (EHD) of deer was first given by Shope et al. in 1955 because of the occurrence of the hemorrhagic disease in large epizootic_ proportions and because of its pathological features. It was also determined by them that the causative agent for the disease is a virus. Difficulties in studying the causative agent have been encountered because no host system other than the deer itself was available to support replication or detect the virus. However, isolation of the New Jersey strain of EHD virus was accomplished by Mettler et al. in 1962 using newborn mice and …

Signal Attenuation In V.H.F. Biotelemetry, John Schmelzer Jan 1970

Signal Attenuation In V.H.F. Biotelemetry, John Schmelzer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, the change in loop resistance is examined when the loop is placed at the center of a spherical air cavity which is in turn surrounded by a sphere of physiological saline solution, as shown. The functional dependence of the magnitude of the dissipation resistance on the cavity radius will be studied. The validity of introducing a dissipation resistance will be experimentally tested by immersing a loop in a physiological saline solution and directly measuring the change in resistance with an r.f. bridge. Once the increase in resistance is established, the resultant reduction in radiated power will be …
