The S. P. G. In New England, 1760-1784: A Social Aspect Of The American Revolution, Irving Henry King Dec 1961

The S. P. G. In New England, 1760-1784: A Social Aspect Of The American Revolution, Irving Henry King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The history of the religious organizations in New England during the American Revolution has been written largely in terms of the experience of the Congregational Church. That is natural, for the part played by the Congregational Church loomed larger there than that of any other denomination, and it was the Congregational organization which took some of the most important steps in initiating the colonial resistance which led to independence. But while the role of the Anglican Church in the crisis was not so significant as that of the Congregational it certainly was not trivial. It constitutes a story that deserves …

Natural And Induced Dormancy In Sorghum Vulgare Pers, Wayne G. Wright Feb 1961

Natural And Induced Dormancy In Sorghum Vulgare Pers, Wayne G. Wright

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Plant breeders interested in hybrid sorghum in the past few years have initiated intensive improvement programs whereby two or three generations of breeding stock may be grown each year. To accomplish this, seed must be harvested as early as is possible, dried immediately, and planted within a few weeks after harvest. During routine testing of these freshly harvested and dried seeds, many samples were found which did not give satisfactory germination results. The low germinating samples were checked with a triphenyl tetrazolium chloride solution to determine their potential viability. The tetrazolium test indicated the seed was 100 percent viable. This …

Effects Of Reserpine Additions To Feed For Broilers And Laying Hens, Harlan R. Woerpel Feb 1961

Effects Of Reserpine Additions To Feed For Broilers And Laying Hens, Harlan R. Woerpel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies with reserpine thus far have shown its possible beneficial effects for poultry to be due to its hypotensive and tranquilizing properties. In growing turkeys, a decreased mortality rate due to aortic rupture has been reported following the feeding of reserpine. Laying hens under social stress showed little or no improvement in egg production with reserpine, but showed less decline in production during thermal stress. A reduction in mortality has been observed during thermal stress. Broilers have indicated a possible improvement in feed conversion and body weight with reserpine under normal and stress conditions. Some studies with poultry showed detrimental …

Chemical Bonding In Niobium Heptaflouride, Russell Leroy Wilson Feb 1961

Chemical Bonding In Niobium Heptaflouride, Russell Leroy Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heptacovalent bonding, in which seven atoms are bonded to a central atom, is known for substances whose structures conform to three different symmetry types. The IF_7 molecule has pentagonal bypyramidal symmetry; the ZrF_7^(--) ion has the structure of a distorted octahedron; NbF_7^(--) and TaF_7^(--) both have distorted trigonal prism symmetry. An investigation of NbF_7^(--) is reported here; the theory of direct-valence bonding is used to determine the approximate bond strengths and bond angles for the ion. The direct valence method is one of two widely used methods of studying chemical structures, the other being the molecular orbital method. These methods …

Effect Of Slope And Exchangeable Sodium On Run-Off, Erosion And Electrical Conductivities Of Leachates From Cheyenne Sandy Loam Soil, Abbas Shahrzad Tabatabai Feb 1961

Effect Of Slope And Exchangeable Sodium On Run-Off, Erosion And Electrical Conductivities Of Leachates From Cheyenne Sandy Loam Soil, Abbas Shahrzad Tabatabai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The textbooks of soil science, discussing the effect of degree of slope on surface run-off and erosion, mention that the lowest amount of run-off occurs at (0) slope. As the degree of slope increases, the amount of surface run-off and erosion also increases. Different experiments report that an increase in the degree of slope is accompanied by an increase in surface run-off and erosion. However, in one experiment, Duley and Kelly (2) report that the degree of slope has only a slight effect on infiltration of water. Several experiments have been done on the effect of exchangeable sodium on the …

Study Of A Variable Feedback Oscillator And Its Use In Automatic Temperature Control, Tien-Chang Hsia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many methods and devices have been utilized in the automatic control of temperature. However, the accuracy requirement of a temperature controlling device depends upon its use. The purpose of this work was to design a device to obtain accuracy of control to the extent of better than one tenth of a degree centigrade of deviation of the specified temperature. This can be accomplished by using a vacuum tube device. The theoretical analysis of the nonlinear characteristic of the electronic circuit will constitute the main part of the work. The complete control system consisted of a feedback type oscillator, a power …

The Dielectric Properties Of Mixtures Of Organic Compounds And Perfluoropropane, Vei-Shi Chen Ho Jan 1961

The Dielectric Properties Of Mixtures Of Organic Compounds And Perfluoropropane, Vei-Shi Chen Ho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, an attempt was made to understand the type and amounts of metastable intermediates formed when perfluoropropane was placed under electrical stress by adding small amoutns of organic compounds such as thiophene, isopropyl mercaptan, ethyl methyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, carbon disulfide, and nitrobenzene. The sulfur compounds were chose because fluorine was reported to react with thiophene to form sulfur hexafluoride. It was thought that if fluorine were formed from perfluorocarbons in the corona, it might be advantageous to remove this metastable species. Nitrobenzene was used because of its known free radical inhibitor characteristic in polymerization reactions. The hope …

The Design And Development Of An Automatic Guiding System For A Tractor, Ali A. Hamidi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mechanization and Automation are very fashionable words in present day Agriculture. Both imply a reduction in the amount of human effort necessary to achieve certain ends, and to accept the need for either of them is to assume that it will lead to some financial gain. Automation as applied to Agriculture is to improve many limited factors which affect the final yield of any agricultural crop. One of these factors, the mechanical operation, requires considerable care and attention to more nearly insure maximum yield and high quality. Numerous methods have been adopted through research and development to minimize field losses …

The Effect Of A Weight Training Program Upon Strength And Trunk Flexibility Of Football Players At South Dakota State College, David H. Greenwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past several years, the use of progressive resistance exercises has increased to the point where it is widely accepted as one of the best methods of increasing strength. The popularization of such exercises has brought about the establishment of weight training programs by football coaches for the purpose of increasing strength between seasons. To effectively increase strength through such exercises, proper methods must be maintained. The use of improper methods of exercise may result in an increase in endurance, where an increase in strength is desired. Weight training is an ideal form of exercise for the development of …

An Amplitude Modulated Radio Telemetry System For The Measurement Of Physiological Temperatures And A Revised Analysis Of R-C Phase-Shift Transistor Oscillators, Carl Jerl Furchner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, electronic instrumentation has been employed as a means of measuring physiological phenomena. One use of this instrumentation is the location of small radio transmitters within animals. The most common method of transmitting temperature data is by varying the carrier frequency of a small temperature sensitive oscillator located within the animal and recording the change of this frequency at the receiver; however, this system has some disadvantages. Reduction of these problems was believed to be possible by developing an amplitude modulated transmitting unit in which a temperature controlled audio oscillator would be used to amplitude modulate the carrier …

This research attempted to study reaction-time measures to muscle sense by use of tactual and kinesthetic stimuli. This study compared reaction time to kinesthetic and tactual stimuli of athletes to that of non-athletes. It was …

An Experimental Writing And Grading Procedure For Freshman Composition, Ray C. Newton Jan 1961

An Experimental Writing And Grading Procedure For Freshman Composition, Ray C. Newton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

College instructors of freshman English commonly acknowledge the existence of problems in teaching composition, many of which stem from two causes: the inadequate preparation in composition of entering freshmen, and the increasing size of college English classes. The traditional method of teaching English, thought it may be successful in indoctrinating a few interested students into the intricacies of composition, has limitations because it restricts the quantity of writing, places heavy demands on the instructor, and emphasizes deductive learning. The present study is an attempt to evaluate an approach where extra themes are assigned, each extra theme is judged and graded …

A Study Of Selected Factors Which May Be Associated With The Imminent Migration Of Individuals From The Lower Brule Indian Reservation, Frank C. Estes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pages of history are filled with the recording of man’s movement from an area of lesser opportunity to one with a more favorable environment for security and happiness. The Dakota people too were lured toward “greener pastures” like countless ages of people have been. However, the needy migrant (particularly the Indian) in American life may well find himself a virtual outcast, not only from his own parent group for forsaking his “gemeinschaft” affiliations, but because the migrant is not yet a legally-qualified resident of the new community. In spite of the unforeseeable shortcomings which any migrant may encounter, however, migration …

The original range of the eastern wild turkey included part of South Dakota. However, they disappeared from the state by 1920 and were not reintroduced until 1948. Up until this point, little work has been done concerning the macroscopic endoparasites of wild turkeys in any region, and no work of this nature has been undertaken in South Dakota. Therefore, the South Dakota Department of Game, fish, and parks entered into a cooperative arrangement with South Dakota State College to determine the incidence and distribution of helminths in wild turkeys of western South Dakota. In 1958, 198 turkeys harvested by hunters …

Serological Activity Of Adsorbed Leptospiral Antigen, Lawrence Joseph Larson Jan 1961

Serological Activity Of Adsorbed Leptospiral Antigen, Lawrence Joseph Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Leptospirosis is not a single disease but a group of diseases caused by a variety of leptospiral serotypes. Investigations during the past seventy years have shown that leptospirosis occurs in humans and animals in all areas of the world. Serological diagnostic procedures have been the principle means of identifying leptospirosis in humans and domestic animals. The agglutination test is a valuable diagnostic procedure for the identification of infections, such as leptospirosis, when it is not practical to isolate the causative organism from suspected cases. One of the earliest tests for the identification of leptospirosis was the agglutination-lysis test. This test …

Genetic Similarity Of Colchicine-Induced Grass-Type Mutants In Sorghum, Jane-Ru Po Chen Jan 1961

Genetic Similarity Of Colchicine-Induced Grass-Type Mutants In Sorghum, Jane-Ru Po Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The induction of true-breeding diploid mutants in certain varieties of Sorghum Vulgare Pers. by application of 0.5 per cent colchicine in lanolin to the coleoptile of the seedlings has been previously reported. Both cytological and genetical evidences obtained by various investigators have indicated the occurrence of gene mutations previous to or concurrent with the reduction division. The repeated occurrence of mutants with identical phenotypes involving whole complexes of characters raises the problem of whether identical major chromatin rearrangements or identical mutagenic effects are responsible. This study was designed to determine whether the phenotypically similar mutants are also genotypically similar. Genetical …

Cuboctahedral And Icosahedral Bonding, Jack Rhoades Canon Jan 1961

Cuboctahedral And Icosahedral Bonding, Jack Rhoades Canon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Before quantum mechanics was developed, the theory of chemical bonding was generally discussed only qualitatively. Since then, however, several theories based on quantitative studies have been advanced. Even the use of quantum mechanics makes it possible to get exact results for only the simplest problems. Nevertheless quantitative results can be obtained for the n-boby problem by using approximation methods. The use of group theory in chemical bonding, first proposed by Bethe, simplified the problem a great deal. This allows one to take advantage of the symmetry properties of a molecule or ion in determining the bonding waves functions and energy …

The Effect Of A Progressive Resistance And Flexibility Exercise Program On Free Running Speed, Ronald D. Campbell Jan 1961

The Effect Of A Progressive Resistance And Flexibility Exercise Program On Free Running Speed, Ronald D. Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The speed of an athlete has always been of great importance to the athletic coach and suggested methods of improving speed have resulted in many studies in research. In 1957, Meisel found that even though an 18 session progressive resistance program did increase leg strength, it significantly reduced the free running speed. This was contrary to results of previous research which indicated increased leg strength did improve running speed. There exists the theory that the stronger the legs, the more capable the runner of overcoming the resistance of body weight and therefore the whole body should be propelled at a …

Preliminary research showed that the industrial promotions in general received some attention, but no literature was found that dealt with the printing industry and …

An Analysis On Managerial Factors That Affect Farm Income In Lake County, South Dakota, Charles Hsi Chung Kao Jan 1961

An Analysis On Managerial Factors That Affect Farm Income In Lake County, South Dakota, Charles Hsi Chung Kao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a considerable difference in income among farmers. It is generally assumed that the level of farm income is related to the degree of managerial success. Managerial success is a composite of successes in carrying out 6 managerial steps: problem recognition, observation, analysis, decision-making, action-taking, and responsibility acceptance. Questions then arise as to where the failures occur in the decision-making process and why they occur. Locating and explaining the reasons for these failures may help increase the income of some farm operators. The general aim of this study was to analyze relationships between the performance of selected managerial functions …
