An Investigation Of The Origin Of Place Names Of Towns In Penobscot County, Maine, William F. Fox Aug 1956

An Investigation Of The Origin Of Place Names Of Towns In Penobscot County, Maine, William F. Fox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study was made of the origin of place names of towns in Penobscot County, Maine. Each of the sixty-one town names is taken up in chronological order. A list of the previous designations of each town, beginning with the survey designation, is included and an attempt has been made to find the origin of these wherever possible as well as the name used today. In many cases the dates of the first settlements, names of early settlers, and brief outlines of the towns’ histories have been included, particularly if these had any bearing upon the origin of the names. …

Culture And Conflict In Israel., Hannah Scoggin Jun 1956

Culture And Conflict In Israel., Hannah Scoggin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Times Square went mad with noise and excitement, and a small freighter slipped from its Brooklyn berth into the drama of the night. It was December 31, 1949--midnight-January 1, 1950; and I was on my way to the world in general and Israel and the Near East in particular. To say the words Near East, to hear them spoken, to read the combination of Latin letters, even to think them fleetingly can conjure up for me a haze of incense-tinged dreams in which I see exotic sights, breathe pungent odours, and hear mysterious sounds. The Near East is all this …

A Comparative Study Of The Ancient And Modern Philosophies Of Time With The Biblical View, James C. Sheerer May 1956

A Comparative Study Of The Ancient And Modern Philosophies Of Time With The Biblical View, James C. Sheerer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are two general views of the time time concept present in the world. The classical or Greek concept of time which is cyclical. On the other hand, the Christian view of time is that it is a straight-line and has a definite meaning.

It is the purpose of this study to consider these two views of time. Even though the Greek view is radically different from the Christian view of time, there have been several so-called Christian concepts of time which when analyzed are really the Greek view.

A Study Of The Usages And Meanings Of The Word "Heart" In The Old Testament, John Willis May 1956

A Study Of The Usages And Meanings Of The Word "Heart" In The Old Testament, John Willis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nearly all Old Testament theological works include large sections on the nature of men. While these works discuss meanings and usages of such important terms as "body," "soul," and "spirit," they devote very little space to the term "heart." This neglect leaves the impression that the Old Testament has only a passing interest in the part of man's nature which is revealed under the term "heart." Lexical and critical studies also minimize the importance of the term "heart." Franz Delitzsch has the most notable works in the theological field of the Old Testament on the study of the "heart." The …

A History Of The Interpretation Of The Relationship Of Faith And Works, Robert Kerry Oglesby May 1956

A History Of The Interpretation Of The Relationship Of Faith And Works, Robert Kerry Oglesby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study if not to give the entirety of what each Christian thinker has said on either "faith" or "works"; rather, this thesis will be concerned with the relationship of these two factors as it has been discussed by major Christian thinkers.

The Relationship Of Scholastic Achievement To Regularity Of Attendance And Participation In Extra-Curricular Activities In The Brookings High School Senior Class Of 1955, Frank Williams Jan 1956

The Relationship Of Scholastic Achievement To Regularity Of Attendance And Participation In Extra-Curricular Activities In The Brookings High School Senior Class Of 1955, Frank Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The writer in this problem is attempting to establish the relationship of scholastic achievement to regularity of attendance and participation in extra-curricular activities. The Brookings, South Dakota High School senior class of 1955 was selected for this study. Because extra-curricular participation is important, more study should be spent on this phase of education to improve the quality of extra-curricular activities and to encourage more pupil participation. Also, this problem may help establish the importance of regular daily attendance in our public schools and show that those who were in regular attendance attained greater achievement in their school work.

A Study To Determine The Importance Of Pre-Service Training In Teaching Farm Mechanics Jobs In Vocational Agriculture, Morris W. Magnuson Jan 1956

A Study To Determine The Importance Of Pre-Service Training In Teaching Farm Mechanics Jobs In Vocational Agriculture, Morris W. Magnuson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Farms today are mechanized to a stage which would have been termed impossible two generations ago. In training the farmers of tomorrow it is the responsibility of the vocational agriculture teacher to prepare the boys to meet the challenge of this mechanized age of farming. Present complexity, new machines, new problems, and new skills to be learned and acquired are challenges which must be met by the teacher and the boy to make him a better farmer than his father before him. In teaching farm mechanics there are hundreds of major and minor skills in which a teacher must be …

Time And Tide : A Study Of The Conflicting Concepts Of Time Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, R. Clyde Mccone Jan 1956

Time And Tide : A Study Of The Conflicting Concepts Of Time Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, R. Clyde Mccone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Indian peoples of the Americas, as well as non-literate peoples around the world, have been swept or are being swept from their cultural moorings by their contacts with ‘white’ civilization. These cultures, whose values center around permanence and patience, have been engulfed in an expanding social order which exalts change. Impelled by its time oriented concepts of progress, opportunity, profit, speed, and efficiency, civilization’s contacts with familizational cultures have been uprooting, breaking, and crushing. The problem of this study shall be to define the Dakota concept of time, to distinguish it from that of Western civilization, and to discover …

The Effects Of Temperature And Leaf Sugar Content On The Electrical Conductance Of Strawberry Leaf Exudates, Kenneth C. Schneider Jan 1956

The Effects Of Temperature And Leaf Sugar Content On The Electrical Conductance Of Strawberry Leaf Exudates, Kenneth C. Schneider

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Once considered to be the inevitable fate of plant life exposed to low temperatures, plant injury is now subject to partial control or alteration under certain conditions. These conditions involve a genetic change in the plant protoplasm by breeding a hardier, more resistant variety or by a change in the environment of the plant that induces resistance to low temperatures. The latter change is frequently known as “hardening” of the plant. While the study of these changes has given considerable insight into the subject, there is little understanding of the basic cause or causes of frost injury, nor is the …

A Survey To Select Area Headings To Be Included In A Handbook For School Administrators To Administer Departments Of Vocational Agriculture In South Dakota, James P. Harper Jan 1956

A Survey To Select Area Headings To Be Included In A Handbook For School Administrators To Administer Departments Of Vocational Agriculture In South Dakota, James P. Harper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study the writer is attempting to find a few of the problems that confront the teacher of agriculture and the superintendent. It is believed that the constant moving and shifting of vocational agricultural instructors from our smaller high schools can be somewhat relieved through a study of this particular type. In a study by Clarke, a former vocational agricultural in South Dakota, it appears that, although salary was the primary problem, there were also other problems that caused vocational agricultural instructors to leave the profession. One of these problems was the lack of cooperation on the part of …

A Study Of Selected Characteristics And The Extent Of Church Activity Of The Membership And Officials In The Free Methodist Church, Upper Midwest Region, Bruce Leffingwell Kline Jan 1956

A Study Of Selected Characteristics And The Extent Of Church Activity Of The Membership And Officials In The Free Methodist Church, Upper Midwest Region, Bruce Leffingwell Kline

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Of the many established and recorded religious groups in the United States over two hundred are classified as Protestant. The sociology of religion, however, has dealt mainly with the larger, more liberal denominations, leaving the many, smaller religious associations relatively unexplored. Nevertheless little information exists which is focused directly on the membership characteristics of a given denomination throughout a specific region. This is particularly true of the smaller Protestant religious associations, any of which are more fundamentalistic in their orientation than the larger denominations. Since most previous research deals with the larger, more liberal churches, the question arises, what type …

A Comparison Of Aerial And Ground Application Of 2,4-D, Using Different Formulations And Rates Of 2,4-D, And Different Kinds And Volumes Of Carrier, Russel L. Nash

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In South Dakota several cases of injury to wheat from airplane application of 2,4-D by commercial applicators were reported. Some 120,000 acres of wheat were sprayed in South Dakota by commercial airplane applicators in 1953. Wheat growers, farm advisors, and research workers in weed control could not explain (1) why the injury was so variable in certain wheat growing regions during a given season, (2) why injury was not serious during some seasons and was an important factor in reduction of yields in others, (3) the conditions under which the injury occurred, (4) why no damage to wheat was reported …

The Effect Of A Soccer Unit On The Agility And Cardiovascular Fitness Of Ninth Grade Boys, Archie Edgar Ward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Physical Fitness today s receiving increasing attention throughout the United States and even the whole world. This was pointed out when President Eisenhower expressed concern over the results of the Kraus-Weber Tests and called a conference on health and physical-fitness. Health literature generally is giving increased emphasis to activity and the results of activity at the various age and size levels. This study is an attempt to evaluate the worth whileness of soccer as an activity in physical education programs especially as it affects cardiovascular-fitness and agility. The purpose of this paper may therefore be listed as follows: (1) to …

Locker And Shower Room Facilities Used For Physical Education In Class "A" High Schools In South Dakota, Arthur T. Jansen Jan 1956

Locker And Shower Room Facilities Used For Physical Education In Class "A" High Schools In South Dakota, Arthur T. Jansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a survey of the existing locker and shower room facilities for physical education in the larger high schools in South Dakota. The state of South Dakota does not require physical education in its public elementary or secondary schools, but leaders in the field are working toward a goal whereby physical education for all pupils from the first through the twelfth would be required. If such a requirement is made of the present school systems in South Dakota, will the schools be able to handle the increased load, and are they now adequately constructed to handle their present load? …

Present Practices In Grading Boys' Physical Education In Secondary Schools Of Minnesota, North Dakota, And South Dakota, Wayne E. Sinning Jan 1956

Present Practices In Grading Boys' Physical Education In Secondary Schools Of Minnesota, North Dakota, And South Dakota, Wayne E. Sinning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Very little research has been done on grading in physical education. Most of the work on the subject is composed of methods and suggestions which authors have developed through their own experience. Very little has been done to determine the needs of the instructor in the classroom situation and to adopt procedures to these needs. These needs arise from many different forces at work affecting the methods the instructor uses. Some of these forces are present procedures, the status and credit given to physical education in the individual schools and the present philosophy of the instructors and school administrators. This …

The Effect Of A Basketball Training Program On Cardiovascular Condition As Shown By The Cameron Heartometer, Harry L. Forsyth Jan 1956

The Effect Of A Basketball Training Program On Cardiovascular Condition As Shown By The Cameron Heartometer, Harry L. Forsyth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Condition is one of the aspects of athletics which is studied by all those working with the physical development of young people. Cardiovascular condition is perhaps the most important type of condition which an athlete must develop in order to have great endurance. The present study was made to determine the effect of a basketball season’s play on the cardiovascular systems of an athlete. All of the testing was done with the aid of the Cameron Heartometer which is a relatively new piece of equipment in the field of Physical Education. Considerable work with the Heartometer has, however, been done, …

The Effect Of Prescibed Weight Training On A Selected Group Of Varsity Basketball Players, Bernard Eugene Duffy Jan 1956

The Effect Of Prescibed Weight Training On A Selected Group Of Varsity Basketball Players, Bernard Eugene Duffy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

n the field of physical education weight lifting has been regarded by many as not having a place in the program because of its hindrance to speed, reaction time, and flexibility in those training for athletics. In recent years it has been receiving more and more attention and experimentation as a supplement to the regular training program of those preparing for physical activities. In this study an effort has been made to observe any influence a program of weight lifting might have upon basketball players in training for the ensuing season. This effect was measured through the use of the …

The Virgil Independent School District And Reorganization, Kenneth E. Bandy Jan 1956

The Virgil Independent School District And Reorganization, Kenneth E. Bandy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Virgil Independent School District, Virgil, South Dakota is a small school district as are so many in South Dakota. The district has attempted over a period of thirty years to provide the high-school educational facilities need for its children and for the children in the surrounding community. Immediately following World War II the cost of providing an adequate education began to rise. A bond issue in 1946 prolonged the financial inadequacy until 1952. At this time the school board decided some ways or means must be found to provide a solution to the school district’s financial problems or the …

A Determination Of Relationship Between Seven Known Factors And A Student's Success In Debate, Kenneth J. Erickson Jan 1956

A Determination Of Relationship Between Seven Known Factors And A Student's Success In Debate, Kenneth J. Erickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High school principals consider the state championship debaters to be outstanding in every respect: in scholarship, leadership, personality, activities, and professional success after high school. These debaters have distinctive personalities and demonstrate leadership both in and outside of the classroom. The principals evaluated these students as scholastic leaders, with many of them receiving university scholarships upon graduation from high school. The superior intelligence of the group was acknowledged. It is apparent that school administrators consider the championship debaters to have been the distinguished citizens in their schools. Personal contact with debaters and debate coaches throughout the state of South Dakota …

Morphology Of Stamens And Staminodia Of Echinocystis Lobata (Michx.) T. & G., Engracia B. Arguelles Jan 1956

Morphology Of Stamens And Staminodia Of Echinocystis Lobata (Michx.) T. & G., Engracia B. Arguelles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number and nature of stamens in flowers of the Curcurbitaceae has long been a controversial problem among students of floral morphology. Naudin 1885, according to Chakvarty (2), thought that 3 was the basic number of stamens in this family. Naudin imagined a 2-2-1 stamen arrangement where 2 is a complete stamen (tetrasporangiate), and 1 is a half-stamen (bisporangiate). In the few species of this family which have five stamens, he believed that the two complete stamens split resulting in what he called four half-stamens. These, together with the normal half-stamen, would account for the total of five, each bearing …

A Study Of Pupil Reporting Practices, School To Home, In Illinois Junior High Schools Organized On A Seven-Eight Grade Basis, Gale Edwin Anderson Jan 1956

A Study Of Pupil Reporting Practices, School To Home, In Illinois Junior High Schools Organized On A Seven-Eight Grade Basis, Gale Edwin Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interest in the welfare of children is as old as love for the first born of primitive man. Despite this ideal of education, the place given the child as an important factor in educational practice has been relatively low. Slow in its initial development pupil reporting practices did not find a place in the educational accounting until the start of the century. In the year 1908 very few cities in the United States, probably not more than thirty, could without great difficulty furnish a record of a pupil’s school life. Today almost all schools can produce some record of the …

Evaluating The Mode Of Inheritance In Tetraploid Alfalfa By Means Of Genetic Intra-Class Correlation, Wesley D. Dunlap Jan 1956

Evaluating The Mode Of Inheritance In Tetraploid Alfalfa By Means Of Genetic Intra-Class Correlation, Wesley D. Dunlap

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Observed segregation ratios for qualitative traits in tetraploid alfalfa have been interpreted on both disomic and tetrasomic modes of inheritance. In fact, some tetrasomic ratios cannot be distinguished from disomic ones (13) without intensive analysis. For quantitative traits, arbitrarily established segregation ratios in themselves are incapable of interpretation with respect to mode of inheritance. Progressive change and fitness in species depend upon continuous variation; analogously, it may be reasonably inferred that artificial plant improvement too, rests upon the exploitation of continuous variation. The alfalfa breeder, in particular, to complement his art with science, must be able to select superior plants …

Factors Affecting Prices Received By South Dakota Egg Producers : A Pilot Study, J. Patrick Brown Jan 1956

Factors Affecting Prices Received By South Dakota Egg Producers : A Pilot Study, J. Patrick Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota egg producers have long been faced with the fact that they receive the lowest average prices per dozen of any state, with the exception of North Dakota. The average price received by South Dakota egg producers from 1950 through 1952 was 31.2 cents per dozen as compared with a national average of 41.9 cents per dozen for the same period. It is the role of this pilot study at the producer level to (1) determine the effect of management (production and handling) and marketing practices on prices received by South Dakota egg producers, (2) compare average prices of …

The Condensation Of The Aminophenols With Maleic Anhydride, Robert H. Becker Jan 1956

The Condensation Of The Aminophenols With Maleic Anhydride, Robert H. Becker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the classification of organic reactions, condensation is used in two different ways. In a very narrow sense, condensation means any reaction in which a carbon to carbon linkage is formed. In a broad sense, it refers to an organic double decomposition reaction in which the reactants are both large in molecules, and one of the products is a small molecule such as water, ammonia, or hydrogen chloride. An example of a condensation, as defined in the narrow sense, would be the reaction of acetaldehyde to form aldol. However, if the aldol is converted to crotonaldehyde with the elimination of …

Studies Of Pleuropneumonia-Like Organisms, John A. Duerre Jan 1956

Studies Of Pleuropneumonia-Like Organisms, John A. Duerre

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The occurrence of a great number of poultry diseases which affect the respiratory systems of both chickens and turkeys has brought about extensive studies on control measures to curb losses due to these infections. The losses due to these infections are tremendous throughout the poultry producing areas of the world. Infectious laryngotracheitis, Newcastle disease, fowl pox, infectious bronchitis, chronic respiratory disease, infectious sinusitis, fowl cholera and aspergillosis cause similar symptoms and gross lesions (19). Diagnosis and preventive treatment are of extreme importance. Fowl cholera and aspergillosis can be detected by cultural techniques. The other six diseases show differential diagnosis with …

Differential Reaction Of Two Varieties Of Sorghum To Colchicine Treatment, Glenn Francis Atkinson Jan 1956

Differential Reaction Of Two Varieties Of Sorghum To Colchicine Treatment, Glenn Francis Atkinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The induction of diploid true-breeding mutants by colchicine treatment of a true-breeding variety of sorghum vulgare Pers. Has been reported by Franzke and Ross (9); Ross, Franzke and Schuh (22); and others (7,10). It has been suggested that such mutant plants might result from point mutations made homozygous by a somatic reduction of the chromosomes followed by a doubling of the chromosome number in a cell which organized a growing point after the original one had been inactivated during c-tumor formation. Observations made during the course of routine work with sorghum indicated that after colchicine treatment some varieties produced tetraploids …

The Effect Of Body Temperature Upon Accuracy In Performing Specific Motor Skills, Roger William Denker Jan 1956

The Effect Of Body Temperature Upon Accuracy In Performing Specific Motor Skills, Roger William Denker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was made to determine the effect of the body’s diurnal temperature variation upon accuracy in performing specific motor skills. The study involved the establishment of a basic temperature curve after which the subject was tested through a series of accuracy tests devised by the author. The subject for this study, for reasons of convenience, was the author. Use of such a small sample, however, is a limitation of the study. The subject was in good health and reasonably sound physical condition.

Genetic Analysis Of F2 Populations From Crosses Involving Colchicine-Induced Mutants In Sorghum, A. Earl Foster Jan 1956

Genetic Analysis Of F2 Populations From Crosses Involving Colchicine-Induced Mutants In Sorghum, A. Earl Foster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colchicine-treated seedlings of a true-breeding variety of Sorghum vulgare Pers. were found to differ in appearance from the untreated checks while retaining the original chromosome number (1,8). Some of the mutant plants bred true for the changed characters in succeeding generations. Cytological examination by Harpstead et al (2) showed no abnormal pairing relationships or detectable chromosomal abnormality in the meiotic stages of the treated material, the untreated material, or their F1 crosses. From these findings it was postulated that colchicine caused a somatic reduction of the chromosomes together with concurrent mutagenic effects and subsequent restoration to the diploid number. A …
