Distribution Of The Herpetofauna Of Kentucky., Symoine Kamin Laufe Sep 1948

Distribution Of The Herpetofauna Of Kentucky., Symoine Kamin Laufe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although the herpetofauna of Kentucky is extensive and varied. it has received much less attention than that of most other states. Many herpetologists have reported on various phases of the state's amphibians and reptiles, but for the most part these reports are discrete, either pertaining to a collection, or a generic or specific study. Hence, there is no single adequate work which aptly describes the herpetology of Kentucky as a whole. When one realizes the keystone position of Kentucky in relation to northern and southern forms, the need of a zoogeographical summary of the state becomes even more apparent. Therefore, …

Milton's Religious Attitude In Samson Agonistes., Milton Gerald Miller Aug 1948

Milton's Religious Attitude In Samson Agonistes., Milton Gerald Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The criticism of Milton's Samson Agonistes has generally centered about interpretation of its autobiographical content and the interpretation of its classical form. The aim of this thesis is to show the relation of the inner, psychological form to the Puritan tradition. The biblical story from which Samson was derived, Judges 13-16, offers little to the scholar in understanding the psychological impetus of Samson. It is mainly a treatment of a pagan narrative demonstrating the snares inherent in trusting a woman with secrets. Samson finally regains his strength and pulls down the temple at Gaza and the narrative ends.

History Of Public Education In Jeffersonville, Indiana., C. C. Callahan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the traveller approaches Jeffersonville from the north by way of U.S. Highway Number Thirty-One, he may see at the city limits a marker bearing the following information: "Jeffersonville was founded in 1802 and named in honor of Thomas Jefferson who planned the original town plat. It was made the county seat by William Henry Harrison, governor of the Indiana Territory." A stranger visiting a city is usually attracted by those things along the lines of his own interests. The engineer would be interested in plats and sanitary conditions. The business man would be interested in the business section. The …

The Poet At War., E. R. Hagemann Aug 1948

The Poet At War., E. R. Hagemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The artist, whether he was novelist, poet, painter or essayist, was caught in the maelstrom of violence and destruction that was World War I. Conscription was employed in most nations participating in the War and the artist, with his accurate, discerning eye and his sensitivity, was destined to report the War as he actually saw it unfold before him. A great part of the creative activity these artists engaged in was an analysis and reportage of the years from 1914, to 1918. Before the Armistice had been signed on November 11, 1918, Henri Barbusse had published his indictment of war, …

A Sociological Study Of Part Time Employment In The Senior High Schools Of Louisville, Kentucky., Thomas Hoskins Kettig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today with the advent of an ever increasing industrialization, the importance of developing the skill, strength, and knowledge of the young people to meet the new age is recognized as never before. Not only must the fundamentalism of traditional education be revised in terms of a more progressive education, but also the practical, non-academic courses should be given more consideration. In this thesis I have attempted to analyze one particularly important aspect of the problem of youth and employment. I have presented here a sociological analysis of part-time employment in the Louisville, Kentucky Senior High schools. It was my intention …

Kentucky Autobiography And Kentucky Culture., William F. Keirce Aug 1948

Kentucky Autobiography And Kentucky Culture., William F. Keirce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the historical development of autobiographical writing in Kentucky; to analyze the literary and philosophical characteristics of these works and, by this means, to divide these writings into several categories; and, finally, to reveal by an interpretation of these autobiographies, certain cultural aspects of Kentucky life and society. As thus stated, the intentions of this study are several; but, actually, all these aims are inseparably related part. of a single general problem which is to investigate Kentucky autobiographical writing as a whole in order to better understand the individual works in that literature.

The purpose of this study is to inquire into the social adjustment of patients admitted to the Louisville General Hospital in 1946, diagnosed as schizophrenic, treated there with electroshock therapy and subsequently discharged to their homes or to the Central State Hospital. Schizophrenia, as we know, is considered one of the most serious of personality disturbances and accounts for a high proportion of the admissions to mental hospitals. There are over 20,000 schizophrenics entering mental hospitals in the United States yearly. Prior to the use of convulsive therapy the prognosis for schizophrenic patients was regarded as poor, and no methods …

The Problem Of Conscription In Maine During The Civil War, Murray Bowden Jun 1948

The Problem Of Conscription In Maine During The Civil War, Murray Bowden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of enforcing conscription in the Northern States during the Civil War was an exceedingly difficult one. The American people abhorred the idea of compulsory military service. The draft laws were formulated to favor the wealthy class at the expense of the poor. This aroused the wrath of the poorer classes. At first, the enforcement of the laws was left to the states, but in 1863, control was transferred to a branch of the War Department, resulting in more efficient administration. Immediately after the Conscription Act of 1863 was passed, riots broke out in Boston, New York and the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1864, the Red Cross was born by the signing of the Treaty of Geneva. It was to become the only great international organization of its kind to relieve suffering during times of war. The founders had advanced the idea that relief in time of epidemics and disaster would be equally valuable, but this idea was not incorporated in the treaty. When the Congress of the United States ratified the treaty, service and relief in time of epidemics and disasters was included with the permission of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva. Although the Red Cross in …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In July 1946 the Board of Health of Louisville and Jefferson County, Kentucky, announced its decision to curtail services of the public health department serving the metropolitan area surrounding and including Louisville, and the outlying agricultural region in the rural part of Jefferson County. In the past decade the combined health department for Louisville and for Jefferson County had accomplished much for the health needs of the citizens of the community. The close association, as a teaching hospital, with the University of Louisville Medical School, had helped General Hospital, the former municipal hospital known as City Hospital to become a …

A Study Comparing The Educational Proficiency Of The One-Room Rural School Graduates And The Town Elementary School Graduates Found In The Freshman And Sophomore Classes Of Six East Central High Schools In South Dakota, William V. Hass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been considerable discussion in recent years concerning the educational proficiency of the eighth grade graduates of one-room rural schools as compared to that of the eighth grade graduates of independent town and consolidated schools as they enter our high schools. These discussions have not been limited to educational circles alone but have also interested members of the general public. In these discussions opinions are many and factors are few. Conclusions in the majority of cases are based on what the individual wishes to believe true, not what is actually true. In making a study of the above named …

Carcass Differences In Inbred Lines And Linecrosses Of Swine, Ellis Andine Pierce Jan 1948

Carcass Differences In Inbred Lines And Linecrosses Of Swine, Ellis Andine Pierce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A great amount of variation in the carcasses from butcher hogs proximal to two hundred and twenty pounds from different lines and breeds has become apparent in recent years. The average hog producer prefers the type of hog that gains quickly and economically and will net the most profit. The average consumer, however, prefers the type of carcass that has a high percentage of lean to fat. Today the dollar value of market hogs is determined more by the amount of finish they are carrying than by the quality of carcass. Since variations do exist in the carcasses from different …
