Contemporary Barriers Impacting Latinx Children's Access To Mental Health Services, Clarissa Reyes, Alejandra Andalon

Latinx parents face various barriers to accessing mental health services for their children, and not enough findings have examined the perspective from a social workers’ lens. This study provides a recent look at consistent and new discoveries that can be classified as barriers for Latinx parents. In this qualitative study, we asked eleven parents to participate in an interview that asked open- ended questions. The qualitative data was gathered in the form of interview transcripts. The transcripts were reviewed for accuracy, coded for themes, and evaluated with the use of thematic analysis. The findings describe various contemporary barriers that impact …

The purpose of the study was to examine what are the perceived barriers to mental health service use among Latinx women with postpartum depression symptoms. The literature on women with postpartum depression symptoms showed that barriers like concern of judgment, lack of support, and lack of knowledge of PPD were some of the reasons why they did not seek treatment.

The study uses in depth, qualitative interviews with seven Latin women who gave birth within the last two years, and experienced postpartum depression symptoms. The interviews were conducted from February 2022 through March 2022.

Background - The number of unaccompanied migrant children arriving at the U.S. southern border has significantly increased. Each year, children are forced to flee from their native countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. These countries form the Northern Triangle region of Central America, which is recognized as “one of the most dangerous places on earth” according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Children from this region, experience significant trauma during their pre-migration, in-transit, and post-migration journey. This raises significant concerns about potential mental health problems.
