The Kinetics Of Volatile Lead Compound Formation During Simulated Hazardous Waste Incineration, Joel Thomas Shor Dec 1994

The Kinetics Of Volatile Lead Compound Formation During Simulated Hazardous Waste Incineration, Joel Thomas Shor

Doctoral Dissertations

Air pollution from fine metal-containing particles (and vapors) formed during hazardous waste incineration has attracted less attention than other incinerator emissions. Recently, however, metal pollution has become subject to more stringent regulations. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced limitations on the emissions of ten toxic metals. Pollution control systems that will effectively remove fine (submicron) metal-containing particles from flue gases are difficult to construct. Incinerators have not been designed or operated to minimize the formation of such particles. Industrial-scale incineration testing has produced anomalous results for air emissions of lead and other metals.

To gain a better fundamental understanding …

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the results of a practical application of a low frequency electrical stimulation (LFES) program of 8 pps to individuals with multiple sclerosis. Previous research has shown that such a program induces a conversion of fast twitch muscle properties to those of slow twitch. Electrical stimulation was applied for 3 hours per day, 6 days a week, for 6 weeks, to the quadriceps femoris muscle of nine subjects with multiple sclerosis. Pre and post measurements of average peak torque, mean force, and fatigue slope were taken as indices of the muscle's strength and …

A Critique Of Tractarian Semantics, Gary Watts Levvis Dec 1994

A Critique Of Tractarian Semantics, Gary Watts Levvis

Doctoral Dissertations

This is a critique of the principal claims made within Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. It traces the development of his thought from the time he dictated the pre-Tractarian "Notes on Logic" to Russell up until about 1932 when he began work on the Philosophical Grammar. The influence exercised upon him by Frege, Russell and Moore are considered at length. Chapter one examines Moore's relational theory of judgment which Wittgenstein apparently accepted upon his arrival at Cambridge in 1911. From Moore Wittgenstein would inherit one of the fundamental metaphysical theses of the Tractatus, namely, that the world consists of facts rather …

Understanding Idealization: Beyond Cognitive Appraisals, Nancy R. Hague Dec 1994

Understanding Idealization: Beyond Cognitive Appraisals, Nancy R. Hague

Doctoral Dissertations

Meanings of idealization were explored from psychoanalytic and social psychological perspectives. Idealization relating to normal development, as described by Kohut and Kernberg, ranges from an unrealistic belief that the other is all-good and omnipotent to a more realistic appreciation of a separate other. Idealization which represents a pathological process was also discussed by Kernberg. Social psychologists (e.g., Hall & Taylor) operationalized idealization in terms of cognitive appraisals and studied it in the context of love.

To construct a new measure, items were generated to represent various types and meanings of idealization. In phase I of research, 230 items were administered …

The Effect Of Off-Farm Economic Activities On Rural-Urban Migration In Brazil, Ricardo C. Lima Dec 1994

The Effect Of Off-Farm Economic Activities On Rural-Urban Migration In Brazil, Ricardo C. Lima

Doctoral Dissertations

Rural-urban migration models commonly assume that rural income and employment are mainly derived from the farm economy. Many studies of rural labor markets in developing countries, however, have indicated that a significant portion of rural employment occurs in nonfarm activities. The present study incorporates the rural nonfarm economy in the traditional rural-urban migration framework, as a determinant of rural labor relocation. Brazil was used as a case study due to the economic and demographic changes experienced by this country during the period between 1960 and 1980. The migration model was estimated in a system of regression equations, which used cross-state …

Income Potential And Stability Of Diversified Tennessee Farms With Emphasis On Environmental Horticulture Plants, Sarfraz Ahmad Dec 1994

Income Potential And Stability Of Diversified Tennessee Farms With Emphasis On Environmental Horticulture Plants, Sarfraz Ahmad

Doctoral Dissertations

Generally, there is a considerable variability in year-to-year farm income for the typical farmer. Variation in farm income poses a risk in agricultural decision making. Diversification among enterprises in farm production has been practiced by producers as one measure against risk. Diversification in farm production involves adoption of a number of production activities instead of a single activity by the producer. Production diversification can potentially be successfully employed to manage price, yield and income risk if different crops, livestock, and or other alternative enterprises react differently to events. The inherent logic has applications in any situation where choice must be …

Some Aspects Of Affect Measurement On Rorschach's Test And The Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire, Greta L. Hunter Aug 1994

Some Aspects Of Affect Measurement On Rorschach's Test And The Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire, Greta L. Hunter

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate some of the ways in which the relationship between two types of measures that assess positive and negative expectations about the world might be improved. The first measure, an index in the Burstein-Loucks comprehensive scoring system (1989) for Rorschach's test, was based on object relations theory. The second measure consisted of two higher-order factors of the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (Tellegen, 1982), an empirically-derived instrument. Revision of the Burstein-Loucks index did not further improve the magnitude of the relationship between the two measures, although it may have slightly changed the nature of that …

Seasons Of Change: Football Desegregation And The University Of Tennessee And The Transformation Of The Southeastern Conference, 1963-67, Robert Thomas Epling Aug 1994

Seasons Of Change: Football Desegregation And The University Of Tennessee And The Transformation Of The Southeastern Conference, 1963-67, Robert Thomas Epling

Doctoral Dissertations

The University of Tennessee football program excluded African-Americans from 1891 to 1967. During most of that span, Volunteer athletic teams competed in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the last major intercollegiate athletic league to desegregate. Between 1963 and 1967, changes in the university athletic department, in the conference, and in society at large prompted Tennessee and several other SEC members to integrate athletics. The process of racial desegregation ranks as perhaps the least chronicled significant event in University of Tennessee football history.

In addressing that void, this dissertation examines the desegregation of the University of Tennessee football program within the context …

Spring leaf expansion was also measured as was spring and autumn chlorophyll content of leaves from mature trees. …

Extraction Of Caffeine From Guaraná Seed With Supercritical Carbon Dioxide, Cyrus Bozorg Mehr Aug 1994

Extraction Of Caffeine From Guaraná Seed With Supercritical Carbon Dioxide, Cyrus Bozorg Mehr

Doctoral Dissertations

A single-pass supercritical fluid extraction system was designed to study caffeine solubility in the fluid. Caffeine was extracted from guaraná seeds with supercritical carbon dioxide in the system. Extraction was conducted as a function of pressure and temperature to determine caffeine solubility at equilibrium conditions at 136.1-272.2 atm and 308, 318, and 328 K. The solution of caffeine into supercritical carbon dioxide was directly affected by carbon dioxide density. Caffeine solubility was modelled by using thermodynamic relationships and Peng-Robinson equation of state. Effective diffusion coefficients of caffeine were determined by conducting long-term extraction experiments on ground guaraná seeds.

Doctoral Dissertations

This research examined differences in relationship patterns between men and women in stepfamilies and men and women in biological families. Previous studies have generally reported more distant relationships with parents for respondents in stepfamilies. Findings on relationships outside the home have been contradictory; some research observed no effect on peer relationships for subjects from stepfamilies, still others reported more difficulty in relationships and greater risk for delinquency among this population. In order to measure relationship differences, three psychometric scales and the social network list were administered to 215 college students (63 stepchildren and 152 biological children). Results indicated that stepsons …

Black Bear Habitat Use In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Frank Teunissen Van Manen May 1994

Black Bear Habitat Use In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Frank Teunissen Van Manen

Doctoral Dissertations

I used telemetry locations of American black bears (Ursus americanus), collected in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) from 1976 to 1982 , to evaluate home ranges, movements, and habitat use. Annual home range estimates averaged 7.6 km2 (SD = 7. 1) for females and 48.5 km2 (SD = 2 1 . 1) for males. For both sexes, fall ranges were larger than summer ranges and shifts occurred between summer and fall centers of activity. Annual and seasonal changes in spatial use of black bears are largely explained by changing activity and movement patterns in response to variation …

A Comparision Of Alternative Forecasting Techniques : An Application Of Scan Data, Kent L. Wolfe May 1994

A Comparision Of Alternative Forecasting Techniques : An Application Of Scan Data, Kent L. Wolfe

Doctoral Dissertations

Scan data have provided a suitable data source for estimating consumer demand relationships at the retail level. These data capture actual quantity and price information which can be combined with additional explanatory variables, such as advertising, promotion and seasonality, to estimate the retail demand function for specific products. Despite the availability of scan data, relatively little research has focused on forecasting at the retail level.

The competitive nature of the supermarket industry, both the encroachment of warehouse food retailers and generic private label products, have lead to an increased interest in consumer demand analysis at the retail level. The increased …
