Flame Photometric Studies: Part A: Studies Of The Extraction And Flame Emission Of Yttrium; Part B: Droplet Size Of Aerosols In Flame Photometry; Part C: Studies Of The Reaction Zone Of An Oxygen Acetylene Flame, William Joseph Carnes Dec 1961

Flame Photometric Studies: Part A: Studies Of The Extraction And Flame Emission Of Yttrium; Part B: Droplet Size Of Aerosols In Flame Photometry; Part C: Studies Of The Reaction Zone Of An Oxygen Acetylene Flame, William Joseph Carnes

Doctoral Dissertations

Although the flame spectrum of yttrium has been well defined in previous work, very little information was available in regard to the effect of spectral and radiation interferences, other than the rare earths, upon the emission of yttrium. Information regarding the optimum conditions for the flame-photometric determination of yttrium was lacking also. The main objective of this phase of work was clarification of these points. Development of a suitable method of analysis for yttrium was also considered.

Resistance To Weakening Influences As A Function Of The Similarity Between Aquisition And Weakening Phases, Harry F. Desroches Dec 1961

Resistance To Weakening Influences As A Function Of The Similarity Between Aquisition And Weakening Phases, Harry F. Desroches

Doctoral Dissertations

In general there are three reasons for the study: (1) to test a specific hypothesis as deduced from a particular theoretical position, the generalization hypothesis, that resistance to weakening influences is a function of the similarity between acquisition and weakening phases, (2) to compare and to contrast the influences of various experimental operations in weakening a learned response, (3) to compare two groups of people who are believed to respond different to traditional methods of strengthening and weakening behaviors.

There is general agreement that much, if not most, of human behavior is learned. As the infant matures he meets new …

An Appraisal Of Psychologic Deficit In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Garret H. Yanagi Dec 1961

An Appraisal Of Psychologic Deficit In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Garret H. Yanagi

Doctoral Dissertations

It is the purpose of this study to investigate the relationship between Psychologic Deficit and the effects of brain damage and environmental experiences. It is an exploratory study, therefore concerned with descriptive, testable data which may yield hypotheses concerning cerebral palsied children.

Thus, an attempt has been made to point out various viewpoints and corresponding contradictory experimental evidence with regard to the cerebral palsied. One criticism which is inherent in many of these studies lies in the difficulty encountered in replicating them. This difficulty was seen in the lack of definition of terms, as well as of well defined groups, …

Some Reactions Of Phenothiazine And Certain Benzophenothiazines, John Charles Gilmer Dec 1961

Some Reactions Of Phenothiazine And Certain Benzophenothiazines, John Charles Gilmer

Doctoral Dissertations

Summary

The consideration of the medical importance of phenothiazine derivatives and the known cancer chemotherapeutic value of the nitrogen mustards made the synthesis of some nitrogen mustard derivatives of the phenothiazines of particular interest. In the course of this research the N-{2-[bis-(2-chloroethyl)amino]ethyl} derivatives of phenothiazine, 7H-benzo[c]phenothiazine, 7H-dibenzo[c, h] phenothiazine, and 14H-dibenzo[a, h] phenothiazine were synthesized for anticancer evaluation. Also submitted to the Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center for testing were the N-(2-chloroethyl) monofunctional nitrogen mustard derivatives of the first three phenothiazines mentioned above.

A New Hypothesis Conerning The Sequence And Nature Of Meiotic Events In The Female Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rhonda F. Grell Dec 1961

A New Hypothesis Conerning The Sequence And Nature Of Meiotic Events In The Female Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rhonda F. Grell

Doctoral Dissertations

Three of the basic phenomena comprising the meiotic process are synapsis, crossingover, and disjunction. It is generally conceded that some form of pairing must precede crossingover; that the crossingover process occurs prior to disjunction; and that disjunction implies a previous association of elements. Construction of a model describing the causal relations among the three events might be expected to be fairly simple, since the possibilities are limited. Yet, no model has been proposed that is consistent with all the genetic data.

Current Practices, Problems, And Opinions As They Relate To The Articulation Of High School And College Programs Of Home Economics, Ruth Arkin Hackman Aug 1961

Current Practices, Problems, And Opinions As They Relate To The Articulation Of High School And College Programs Of Home Economics, Ruth Arkin Hackman

Doctoral Dissertations

A focal point in educational circles today is that of improved articulation between the curriculum of the secondary school and that of the college or university. This situation is evidenced by the great amount of space given to the subject in educational literature. Concern is expressed over excessive duplication in college courses of content and experiences included in high school courses. Attention is focused on more effective continuity of study at the two levels with a minimum of overlap. There is considerable activity throughout the United States as organized groups of educators are studying this problem and making recommendations for …

A Study Of Catalytic Reactions On Semiconductors: Hydrogen Deuterium Exchange And Formic Acid Decomposition On Chemically-Doped Germanium, George Edward Moore Aug 1961

A Study Of Catalytic Reactions On Semiconductors: Hydrogen Deuterium Exchange And Formic Acid Decomposition On Chemically-Doped Germanium, George Edward Moore

Doctoral Dissertations

Summary: Rates and activation energies for the hydrogen-deuterium exchange and formic acid vapor decomposition were measured on a series of chemically-doped germanium catalyst over the temperature range 100° to 400°. The germanium catalyst were intrinsic, and n or p-type extrinsic semiconductors; the position of the Fermi level of the solid was located suitably on the forbidden energy gap.

Kinetic parameters of the exchange and decomposition reactions were related to the Fermi level (electronic chemical potential) of the solid. Their dependence suggested that the rate-limiting processes involved electronic charge shifts between adsorbate and semiconductor.

Two different rate processes appeared to …

A Study Of Factors Involved In Establishing A Satisfactory Thermal Environment In The Classroom, Homer Franklin Mincy Jr. Aug 1961

A Study Of Factors Involved In Establishing A Satisfactory Thermal Environment In The Classroom, Homer Franklin Mincy Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Since the dawn of civilization, man has wrestled with the weighty problems of government, war, science, philosophy, and religion. Perhaps no problem has taxed man's ingenuity as much, however, as that of determining and maintaining the proper thermal environment for the various activities in which he has engaged. Indeed, some sociologist believer that the satisfactory solution of this problem has often aided man in the solution of his other problems.

Although the term "thermal environment" is a comparatively recent addition to the vocabulary of school administrators and teachers, the control of temperature, humidity, cleanliness, and movement of air, aspects …

Some Environmental Features Of Hallett Station, Antarctica, With Special Reference To Soil Arthropods, Madison E. Pryor Aug 1961

Some Environmental Features Of Hallett Station, Antarctica, With Special Reference To Soil Arthropods, Madison E. Pryor

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Since Cook's voyage of 1772-1775, numerous expeditions, nationally and independently supported, have explored coastal and inland areas of Antarctica. The primary purpose of most early scientific expeditions was directed toward a study of the physical nature of the continent. In most instances, biologists were not included as expedition personnel and a large portion of the information concerning the flora and fauna of the continent has been contributed by investigators trained in a variety of scientific disciplines. A very few systematic investigations of land flora and soil fauna have been made. In spite of the obvious inadequacy of such investigations, …

Coulomb Excitation With Heavy Ions, Rogers Charles Ritter Aug 1961

Coulomb Excitation With Heavy Ions, Rogers Charles Ritter

Doctoral Dissertations

Summary: The work for this thesis began with a study, on the ORNL 200-kev Cockcroft-Walton, of the possible use of the radio frequency ion source for multiply charged heavy ion production. When the results of this seemed unfavorable for the intended research, a PIG type ion source was designed and tested. It was capable of supplying usable quantities of Ne3+ ions, and was installed and used in the ORNL 5.5 Mv Van de Graaff accelerator.

Multiply-charged components from the PIG source were not as copious as those from several larger PIG sources that had been reported as having been …

Competitive Catalytic Hydrogenation Of Benzene, Toluene, And The Polymethylbenzenes On Platinium, Charles Phillip Rader Aug 1961

Competitive Catalytic Hydrogenation Of Benzene, Toluene, And The Polymethylbenzenes On Platinium, Charles Phillip Rader

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: This investigation embraced a comparison of the relative rates of hydrogenation on platinum of benzene and several of its methyl-substituted derivatives with their relative strengths of adsorption on the active spots of the catalyst surface. It consisted of the determination of the rate of reduction of the individual hydrocarbons and a variety of their binary mixtures. Its ultimate goal was to aid in the elucidation of the mechanism by which the benzene nucleus accepts hydrogen on a platinum surface.

Heat And Momentum Transfer Within The Thermal Entrance Region For Non-Newtonian Fluids In Laminar Flow, George Marshall Drake Jr. Aug 1961

Heat And Momentum Transfer Within The Thermal Entrance Region For Non-Newtonian Fluids In Laminar Flow, George Marshall Drake Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

It was felt that a technique of experimentally evaluating thermal conductivities of liquids from a dynamic flow system was necessary for the analysis of functional relationships between thermal conductivity and shear stress for non-Newtonian fluids, and the present work was undertaken in an attempt to develop such a technique. Specifically, the objectives were: (a) to develop an experimental and mathematical method to evaluate point values of thermal conductivity as a function of temperature and shear stress, and (b) to evaluate the effect of liquid thermal conductivity variation on temperature profiles observed in laminar non-isothermal flow.

To achieve these objectives, a …

Studies On The Morphology And Growh Rate Of The Cestode Hymenolepis Microstoma After Gamma Irradiation Of The Cysticercoids And Eggs, Huldrich H. Kuhlman Aug 1961

Studies On The Morphology And Growh Rate Of The Cestode Hymenolepis Microstoma After Gamma Irradiation Of The Cysticercoids And Eggs, Huldrich H. Kuhlman

Doctoral Dissertations

From the literature on effects of radiation on mammals, insects, and other organisms, it appears that radiation produces abnormalities chiefly by destroying or inhibiting growing cells and tissues. The effects on length of the worms may be due to reduction in cell population responsible for growth. The presence of certain morphological abnormalities which have been observed, particularly those which have been characterized by the absence of one or more reproductive organs, might also be attributed to a change in the growth or embryological apparatus and that radiation only serves to increase the frequency of these disturbances.

Meiosis, Mitosis, And The Induction Of Chromosomal Abnormalities In Hymenolepis Diminuta By Gamma Rays, Raymond Louis Kisner

Doctoral Dissertations

Summary

A growth rate study for H. diminuta in ten worm infestations was attempted. The desired number of worms was not recovered from enough rats to determine a reliable growth curve. It was discovered that worm length varied within rats and between rats of comparable sex, age, weight, worm burden, and genetic background.

Driver Education In Tennessee Public Schools: An Appraisal Of Administration, Instruction And Personnel, Earl W. Henry Jun 1961

Driver Education In Tennessee Public Schools: An Appraisal Of Administration, Instruction And Personnel, Earl W. Henry

Doctoral Dissertations

Since primitive travel caused few traffic problems, simple, unwritten rules of the road remained sufficient for many centuries. It is interesting to note, however, that in 396 B.C. the Romans felt compelled to write traffic laws for the city of Rome. One of these early ordinances written in 205 B.C. state that women were forbidden to drive vehicles within the city of Rome. During the rule of Julius Caesar congested traffic conditions necessitated a regulation that vehicles could not enter the city during business hours and in 50 B.C. a Roman law was passed against "trucking."

Traffic regulations changed little …

Liquid Thermal Diffusion: The Prediction Of Separations; Experimental Data For Cuso4-Coso4-H2O Using A Soret Cell Of New Design, Daniel Hershey Jun 1961

Liquid Thermal Diffusion: The Prediction Of Separations; Experimental Data For Cuso4-Coso4-H2O Using A Soret Cell Of New Design, Daniel Hershey

Doctoral Dissertations

Investigation of the thermal diffusion phenomenon has transcended the merely academic phase. It is recognized that in some cases thermal diffusion can represent an effective means of separating components, such as isotopes in gases, close boiling components and isotopes in the liquid phase, and electrolytes in aqueous solution. If the separation in a thermal diffusion column could be predicted, it would be possible to scale up, make economic feasibility studies and other pertinent calculations. Thus thermal diffusion would join the mass transfer operations such as distillation, extraction, and the relatively new ion exchange.

Thermal diffusion in gases has been adequately …

Operational Characteristics Of A Fission Gas Detector, Raymond Curtis Lee Jun 1961

Operational Characteristics Of A Fission Gas Detector, Raymond Curtis Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: One of the major problems associated with the operation of nuclear reactors is the radioactivity hazard caused by the release of fission products from the fuel. In a solid-fuel reactor, the uranium is usually present in an allow or in the form of UO2, either in the pure state or mixed with other oxides which improve the thermal and mechanical properties of the material. As the fuel material undergoes fission in the reactor, radioactive fission products are produced. If they were not prevented from doing so, these fission products would diffuse out of the fuel material, enter …

Typal Sets And Syndromes Of Administrative Behavior, Robert B. Smawley Jun 1961

Typal Sets And Syndromes Of Administrative Behavior, Robert B. Smawley

Doctoral Dissertations

One marked shift in appraisal programs during the past few years has been directed towards assessing performance on the job rather than on the personal characteristics of those being rated. Despite the trend, however, there remains a seemingly innate proclivity among raters to project their views of ratees to encompass not only what is observed, but also the etiology and mode of behavior.

The Carrier-Recombination Behavior And Annealing Properties Of Radiation-Induced Recombination Centers In Germanium, Orlie Lindsey Curtis Jr. Jun 1961

The Carrier-Recombination Behavior And Annealing Properties Of Radiation-Induced Recombination Centers In Germanium, Orlie Lindsey Curtis Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

An investigation has been made of the carrier-recombination behavior and annealing properties of radiation-induced recombination centers in germanium. In order to analyze the recombination behavior, it has been necessary to treat the problem of recombination in the presence of trapping. A model which explains the experimental results in both n- and p-type material for various sorts of irradiation is presented. On the basis of this model, recombination occurs at an energy level 0.36 ev above the valence band in gamma-irradiated, n- type germanium. The position of this level is shifted slightly downward for neutron-irradiated material. An energy level apparently present …

Walter Savage Landor's Views On English Life And Literature: A Critical Study Of His English Imaginary Conversations, John William Warren Jun 1961

Walter Savage Landor's Views On English Life And Literature: A Critical Study Of His English Imaginary Conversations, John William Warren

Doctoral Dissertations

To students of literature, Landor's dialogues of exposition will be worthwhile for their literary criticism and views on political and social history. On the other hand, the essentially dramatic Conversations have a more universal appeal as literary art, because in them principles and ideas give way to artistic presentation of character. In these dramatic scenes of historical and literary figures ot the English past, Landor skillfully creates drama or reve lation of character in the attitudes and personal reflections of his speakers without burdening the dialogues with his own historical documentation and exposition of ideas.

A Search For Important Stimulus Variables In The Early Family Relationships Of Schizophrenic Patients, Robert F. Horner Jun 1961

A Search For Important Stimulus Variables In The Early Family Relationships Of Schizophrenic Patients, Robert F. Horner

Doctoral Dissertations

Summary and Conclusions

Ten male schizophrenic patients and their control subjects were matched on the variables age, education, and socioeconomic status by occupation. The Pascal-Jenkins Behavioral Scales (Pascal & Jenkins, 1960b) were used to investigate the stimulus situations presented by grandparents, parents, and siblings in the first ten years of the subjects’ lives. The experiment was replicated with ten additional experimental subjects and their controls.

The stimulus categories “Mother” and “Father” were found to be highly significant in both experiments. This suggested that the schizophrenic patients had more general deprivation of needs by parents in the early years. Specifically defined …

A Study Of Important Stimuli In The Lives Of Men With Lung Cancer, Landon Crocker Peoples Jun 1961

A Study Of Important Stimuli In The Lives Of Men With Lung Cancer, Landon Crocker Peoples

Doctoral Dissertations

(From the Introduction)

Except in specified instances where the etiology is known, the growth of cancerous tissue in humans is an unsolved problem (Cutler 1954). Most of the investigations in this area have been medical, physiological, or biochemical. There are, however, enough studies of a psychological nature (to be cited in a later section), with sufficiently intriguing results, to warrant further research into the possibility of a relationship between psychological variables and the incidence of human cancer. The present study is concerned with this relationship.

The Strawberry Leaf Roller Complex In Tennessee, Stelmon Emerson Bennett Mar 1961

The Strawberry Leaf Roller Complex In Tennessee, Stelmon Emerson Bennett

Doctoral Dissertations

This study was undertaken in order to learn the basic biology of the strawberry leaf roller Ancylis comptana fragariae in Tennessee. Shortly after the initiation of the study, it was found that not one, but several forms of leaf roller larvae were involved in the damage being done to strawberries. The study was therefore broadened to include the entire complex of leaf roller species and subspecies which inflict damage to strawberries and sometimes to other host plants in Tennessee. Three of the eleven forms making up the complex were selected as being most important because of their abundance and the …

A Historical And Critical Study Of Browning's Asolando Volume, Paulina Estella Buhl Mar 1961

A Historical And Critical Study Of Browning's Asolando Volume, Paulina Estella Buhl

Doctoral Dissertations

Because Browning’s late work has often been considered inferior to his early work and because his fame suffered a decline soon after his death, there has been no thorough study of Asolando Fancies and Facts, his final volume. A close reading of these poems shows that this neglect is unjustifiable, for the collection contains some of Browning’s best work after The Ring and the Book and reveals significant facts about his poetic development, coming as it does at the very end of his life. Therefore it is the purpose of this study to examine the volume as completely as …
