Elastic-Plastic Analysis Of Axisymmetrically Loaded Isotropic Circular And Annular Plates Undergoing Large Deflections, Aiman Raji Akileh
Elastic-Plastic Analysis Of Axisymmetrically Loaded Isotropic Circular And Annular Plates Undergoing Large Deflections, Aiman Raji Akileh
Dissertations and Theses
The concept of load analogy is used in the elastic and elastic-plastic analysis of isotropic circular and annular plates undergoing moderately large deflection. The effects of the nonlinear terms of lateral displacement and the plastic strains are considered as additional fictitious lateral loads, edge moments, and in-plane forces acting on the plate. The solution of an elastic or elastic-plastic Von Karman type plate is hence reduced to a set of two equivalent elastic plate problems with small displacements, namely, a plane problem in elasticity and a linear elastic plate bending problem. The method of finite element is employed to solve …

1. Are the learning styles of the International students tested different from those established by Kolb in previous studies of American students?
2. Do the learning styles of the International students tested differ among the various groups?
3. Are there differences among the groups of International students tested that can be related to gender?
4. Do the learning styles of the …
Finding A New Voice: The Oregon Writing Community Between The World Wars, Karen Stoner Reyes
Finding A New Voice: The Oregon Writing Community Between The World Wars, Karen Stoner Reyes
Dissertations and Theses
The period of 1919 to 1939 was a significant one for the development of the literature of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. The literary work produced in the region prior to the first world war was greatly influenced by the "Genteel tradition" of the late nineteenth century. By 1939, however, the literature of Oregon and the region had emerged from the outdated literary standards of the pre-war period and had found a new, realistic, natural voice, strongly regional in nature and rooted in the modern American tradition.
This change came about in large part through the efforts of a small …
Care, Need, And Conceptions Of Love: A Reexamination, Janet Gruwell Morris
Care, Need, And Conceptions Of Love: A Reexamination, Janet Gruwell Morris
Dissertations and Theses
The present study examines the roles need and care play in such positive interpersonal attitudes as love, liking, attraction, and friendship, by both replicating and extending a 1982 study by Steck, Levitan, McLane, and Kelley. Subjects were presented with slightly revised Rubin Love Scales which were filled out as if by persons involved in relationships, and were asked to judge how much each hypothetical person loved, liked, was attracted to, and felt friendly toward their partner. In fact, the love scales had been divided into three components, i.e. need, care, and trust, and were filled out with each component at …

The Chemistry Of Novel Chromium(Iv) Systems And Fluorinated Hypochlorites, Joseph Onuorah Udeaja
The Chemistry Of Novel Chromium(Iv) Systems And Fluorinated Hypochlorites, Joseph Onuorah Udeaja
Dissertations and Theses
Chromium(IV) has been of interest for some time because of its role as an intermediate in chromic oxidation reactions. Since there are not a great number of stable tetravalent chromium complexes known, and the use of such species as oxidizing agents has not been widely explored, the preparation, isolation and characterization of new stable tetravalent chromium species may allow chemists the opportunity to more fully understand the role which tetravalent chromium plays in oxidation reactions. The present study thus involves the synthesis of Cr(OC4H9)4 and other Cr(IV) derivatives and the use of Cr(OC4H …

Tephrostratigraphy Of The Middle Eocene Chumstick Formation, Cascade Range, Douglas County, Washington, Matthew John Mcclincy
Dissertations and Theses
This study outlines the ash (tuff) bed stratigraphy (tephrostratigraphy) in the middle Eocene Chumstick Formation of central Washington. The tuff beds provide local marker beds enabling interpretation of the stratigraphy and structure of the formation. The chemical signature of these units provides the basis on which the units can be traced over broad areas in the basin of deposition. Correlations of tuff beds were obtained over distances of 41 km.
The tephrostratigraphy of the Chumstick Formation consists of nineteen tuff marker beds. Seventeen of these units are chemically characterized in this study. Ten elements were used to fingerprint these tuff …
A Contextual Analysis Of Selected Communication Strategies Associated With Dyadic And Situation Characteristics: A Field Study, Gisele Marie Tierney
A Contextual Analysis Of Selected Communication Strategies Associated With Dyadic And Situation Characteristics: A Field Study, Gisele Marie Tierney
Dissertations and Theses
A contextual analysis investigation of related communication acts is concerned with the multidimensional nature of human interdependence. The communication strategy is a category of relational communication acts that can be viewed as one of the ways in which interactants promote or maintain a working consensus and enhance interpersonal discovery. Strategy use is motivated by the nature of the relationship rather than by the speaker's conscious attempts to direct outcomes.
After The Sixties: Anthropology In Sixth Grade Social Studies Textbooks, Christine Skei Rossi
After The Sixties: Anthropology In Sixth Grade Social Studies Textbooks, Christine Skei Rossi
Dissertations and Theses
During the 1960s, anthropology was an important part of the social studies curriculum. This study explores the question of whether twenty years later, anthropology is still an important part of primary and secondary school curricula and textbooks. To answer that question, the author used content analysis to analyze 13 sixth grade social studies textbooks for their anthropological content. Results of the research indicate that there is very little anthropology in the texts, the same topics and concepts are covered in most of them, and that most of the anthropological material is narrative or descriptive in form rather than theoretical. The …
Comparative Self-Monitoring Behavior And Recall Of Verbal And Nonverbal Interactional Information About Partner In Conversations With Ablebodied And Disabled Partners, Doris L. Werkman
Dissertations and Theses
When strangers meet, there is a high level of uncertainty due to the infinite number of possible alternatives in behavior between the two people. Previous research indicates that communicators will attempt to reduce the level of uncertainty by using available verbal and nonverbal information of the other, by seeking similarities with the other, and by observing the situation itself. This information is used to predict attitudes and beliefs, as well as to attribute characteristics of the other. Other studies indicate that a person will increase her level of self-monitoring activity when the level of uncertainty is increased.

A one dimensional, steady flow, unsteady temperature model is used to evaluate the effects of two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) dams and resulting reservoirs on hourly water temperatures of the mainstem McKenzie River from Delta Park (RM 62.1) to Leaburg Dam (RM 38.8). Both COE projects are on tributaries to the McKenzie River and at present have only bottom withdrawl capabilities.
Water temperatures were simulated using the equilibrium temperature approach with air temperature used to estimate equilibrium temperature and also using computed hourly equilibrium temperature. Results obtained using computed equilibrium temperatures were less satisfactory than results using air …
Cooperative Responses In Competitive Soccer, Rodney Gordon Williamson
Cooperative Responses In Competitive Soccer, Rodney Gordon Williamson
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to discover patterns in intra-team cooperation (passing) versus individualistic behavior (dribbling) across various age and gender groups. A behavioral coding scheme for soccer players in possession of the ball was designed to tabulate team responses of passing or dribbling behavior in a four-a-side indoor tournament. A total of 32 teams, 18 male teams and 14 female teams, participated in four age brackets. A multi variate analysis of variance (MANOVA) generated one significant result for age and passing behavior. This supported the first hypothesis that intra-team cooperative behavior increased with age. Due to the nonorthogonal …

Adsorption Of Aminopyridines To Phosphatidylserine Vesicles, Colin Wright
Adsorption Of Aminopyridines To Phosphatidylserine Vesicles, Colin Wright
Dissertations and Theses
Intrinsic association constants were determined for a series of aminopyridines on phosphatidylserine vesicles, through determination of electrophoretic mobility. The magnitudes of the constants were such that depolarization of the nerve terminal through binding to negative phospholipids seems unlikely to occur. The aminopyridines all had association constants between one half and one sixtieth the association constant of calcium. The aminopyridines probably block potassium channels in their enhancement of synaptic transmission.
An interesting correlation was noted in that the ranking of the aminopyridines in terms of their affinity for these lipids was approximately the same as the ranking of their enhancement of …

Dissertations and Theses
The Fountain Landslide located along I-84, five kilometers east of Cascade Locks, Oregon has moved periodically for over thirty years. Aerial photographs taken prior to recorded movement of the landslide show the headscarp of a large preexisting landslide. In 1952 a cut was made into the toe of the landslide to straighten Highway 30. The recorded movement history begins at this time. Stabilization procedures in the late 1950's focused on dewatering the slide mass. Movement had nearly stopped by 1957. A deeper cut was made into the toe of the landslide in 1966 to widen the highway to the four-laned …
Effect Of Ethanol On Thermoregulation In The Goldfish Carassius Auratus, Candace Sharon O'Connor
Effect Of Ethanol On Thermoregulation In The Goldfish Carassius Auratus, Candace Sharon O'Connor
Dissertations and Theses
In an attempt to elucidate the mechanism by which ethanol affects vertebrate thermoregulation, the effect of ethanol on temperature selection was studied in the goldfish, Carassius auratus. Ethanol was administered to 10 to 15 g fish by mixing it in the water of a temperature gradient. The dose response curve was very steep between 0.5% (v/v) ethanol (no response) and 0.7% (significant lowering of selected temperature in treated fish). Fish were exposed to concentrations of ethanol as high as 1.7%, at which concentration most experimental fish lost their ability to swim upright in the water. At concentrations higher than …

The Effects Of Two Management Techniques On The Generalization Of A Syntax Structure, Karin Jeanne Goodling
The Effects Of Two Management Techniques On The Generalization Of A Syntax Structure, Karin Jeanne Goodling
Dissertations and Theses
The effectiveness of any language training program is determined by generalization of the clinically trained behaviors to spontaneous speech. Traditional language programs which employ operant procedures to establish the behavior in the clinic and reinforcement from family, teachers and peers in a variety of settings to obtain generalization, have been successful in establishing the use of grammatical rules in the clinic setting, but reportedly have failed to promote generalization. Recent literature in the areas of semantics and pragmatics has produced a trend toward teaching language in natural contexts. The purpose of this study was to investigate: 1) whether a group …

An Investigation Of Resolution And Addressability Requirements For Digital Display Systems Used In Word-Processing And Computer-Aided-Drafting Applications, Stephen T. Knox
Dissertations and Theses
Two hardware factors contributing to the overall image quality of digital CR Ts are display resolution and addressability. The relationship between these two factors and human performance was modeled by a metric of display quality, the Resolution Addressability Ratio (RAR), and investigated within the contexts of Word-Processing (WP) and Computer-Aided-Drafting (CAD) tasks. The findings indicate a perceptual limit to MTF bandwidth improvements, and significant differences iii display quality requirements between the two applications. The regression of image quality as a function of RAR metric values resulted in an r2 = 0.94 for the WP task and an r2 = 0.79 …
