Effect Of Phenoxy Acids And Their Derivatives On The Ionic Permeability Of Bilayer Lipid Membranes, Malkanthi Paulis Illangasekare
Effect Of Phenoxy Acids And Their Derivatives On The Ionic Permeability Of Bilayer Lipid Membranes, Malkanthi Paulis Illangasekare
Dissertations and Theses
It has been found that the herbicide 2,4-D has the ability to increase the rate of transport of positive ions of several kinds and inhibit the transport of negatively charged tetraphenylborate ions in lipid bilayer membranes. Only the neutral molecules of 2,4-D are transport active. The ionized 2,4-D molecules do not modify the transport of ions, and do not by themselves permeate through lipid membranes. The results suggest that the enhancement of transport of positively charged ions is dominated by the increase of the ion translocation rate constant. It has been shown that membrane transport of negatively charged tetraphenylborate ions …
A Construct Validity Study For The Women Workers Scale Questionnaire, Gwen Simpson
A Construct Validity Study For The Women Workers Scale Questionnaire, Gwen Simpson
Dissertations and Theses
This study attempted to obtain evidence on the construct validity of the Women Workers Scale (WWS), an attitude scale developed to measure male supervisors' attitudes toward women workers. As women enter the work world in increasing numbers, they are usually supervised by men. However, few studies have examined the attitudes of male supervisors toward women workers. At least one author (Bass, 1972) reported that there were significant differences among male managers in their attitudes toward women. Specifically, those male managers who had not worked with women held more favorable attitudes than male managers who had worked with women.
Dance And Self Concept Change In Women, Robin Dale Anderson
Dance And Self Concept Change In Women, Robin Dale Anderson
Dissertations and Theses
Numerous authors in the field of dance therapy have proposed that dance movement employed as a psychotherapeutic tool yields positive gains in mental health for participants. Self concept is frequently cited as the mechanism affecting these gains. In order to explore the relationship of dance movement alone to self concept fifteen college women were tested with the Tennessee Self Concept Scale before and after participation in a course of dance with those of nineteen women enrolled in lower division psychology courses. An analysis of covariance showed no significant changes in self concept scores in either group. It was concluded that …
Changes In Populations Of Soil Acari During The First Year After Clearcutting, Sue Ellen Orlaske
Changes In Populations Of Soil Acari During The First Year After Clearcutting, Sue Ellen Orlaske
Dissertations and Theses
Soil samples taken from a clearcut and adjacent uncut site of a Douglas Fir and Western Hemlock old growth forest in the Cascade Range of southern Washington showed greatly reduced adult and juvenile population densities of macro-phytophagous, microphytophagous, and predatory soil acari in the clearcut. These effects appeared to be due to high lethal summer litter temperatures and reduced pore spaces due to scarification. Also, the number of species of acari in the clearcut was lower than in the control after clearcutting.
A Critique Of Bandler And Grinder's Method Of Mapping Representational Systems, Leslie E. Goldmann
A Critique Of Bandler And Grinder's Method Of Mapping Representational Systems, Leslie E. Goldmann
Dissertations and Theses
People perceive the world in their own terms: our use of language reflects our perceptions. The way in which we perceive the world and the words we use to reflect that perception Grinder and Bandler (1976) call a "representational system." The authors isolate three types of representational systems, visual, kinesthetic, and auditory, and they present a technique for mapping these systems. These authors state that a sensory preference profile can be mapped accurately and reliably via an individual's use of language. For example, words such as "clear," "see" and expressions of the kind "I get a picture" would connote a …

Copper Toxicity And Extracellular Release In Selenastrum Capricornutum, Michael Edwin Darling
Copper Toxicity And Extracellular Release In Selenastrum Capricornutum, Michael Edwin Darling
Dissertations and Theses
Copper toxicity was investigated using the green alga, Selenastrum capricornutum. Two major areas were investigated: the forms of copper which are toxic to growth of the alga and factors that can change the concentration of free copper, Cu2+(aq), in the growth medium during the logarithmic growth of the organism. This research has shown that S. capricornutum is sensitive to the free Copper ion, Cu2+(aq), irrespective of the total copper concentration.
An Exploratory Analysis Of The Response Of Urban Police To Labor Radicalism, Dennis Earl Hoffman
An Exploratory Analysis Of The Response Of Urban Police To Labor Radicalism, Dennis Earl Hoffman
Dissertations and Theses
Social scientists examining the police role have typically assumed that the individual police officer or department is relatively free to implement social policy as he/she or it sees fit. This assumption is reflected in many police studies which stress the importance of police chiefs, police discretion, and police personalities as being the decisive factors in police behavior.
A more tenable approach to studying the police would be to examine police behavior in terms of the place of the police in class conflict. This approach would focus mainly on how conditions outside of police organizations have shaped police response.

The Effects Of Instructions On Prosocial Behavior Of Preschool Children, Jane Marie Blackwell
Dissertations and Theses
This experiment examined the effects of instructions on the prosocial behavior (i.e., helping, sharing, teaching, and sympathy) of preschool children. Forty-eight individual children (X = 56.7 months) interacted with two adult women on two separate occasions, an initial session measuring baseline levels of prosocial behavior, and a second session several days later. In the second session, children received instructions in helping, sharing, and teaching, and an opportunity to rehearse, or practice, these prosocial behaviors. Children were given either power assertive instructions (i.e., instructions which directly told the child what to do), or inductive instructions (i.e., instructions which focused the child's …
Consciousness, Neurons, And Laughing Gas, Dody Michelson Orendurff
Consciousness, Neurons, And Laughing Gas, Dody Michelson Orendurff
Dissertations and Theses
Psychological and physiological effects of nitrous oxide resemble those of eight other drug categories. Lipid solubility or hydrate microcrystal theories correlate behavioral measures with measurable parameters of the molecule N2O. N2O, a spindle poison, halts mitosis in metaphase, producing widespread physiological consequences. N2O affects the microtubules of the spindle in a number of specific ways. Microtubules are utilized in other parts of eukaryotic cells, in a wide variety of functions. In neurons, microtubules build and maintain dendritic sensory processes. Since microtubules are built of two dissimilar proteins, constantly assemble and disassemble, and maintain a …

A Feasibility Analysis Of A Directly Sun-Pumped Carbon Dioxide Laser In Space, Seiichi Morimoto
A Feasibility Analysis Of A Directly Sun-Pumped Carbon Dioxide Laser In Space, Seiichi Morimoto
Dissertations and Theses
The possibility of using sunlight to pump a CW carbon dioxide laser has been analyzed. Such a laser could be of interest for such applications as space communication and power transmission. In order to optically pump CO2 using sunlight, the intense vibrational-rotational absorption bands of CO2 in the 4.3 micron spectral region would have to be utilized. The total pumping power from sunlight can be calculated from the known data of the solar spectral irradiance outside the atmosphere and the infrared absorption by carbon dioxide at 4.3 microns. The pumping power is proportional to the collector area of …

Ascorbic Acid, Lipid Peroxidation, And Aging, Brian Evan Leibovitz
Ascorbic Acid, Lipid Peroxidation, And Aging, Brian Evan Leibovitz
Dissertations and Theses
The role of ascorbic acid with regard to lipid peroxidation and aging has been examined. A thorough literature analysis indicates that free radical-induced lipid peroxidation is a plausible biochemical explanation for aging. Lipid peroxidation causes cellular damage due to altered enzyme activities, error-prone nucleic acid metabolism, and membrane dysfunction, as well as the accumulation of aging pigments in the lysomes. Ascorbic acid, a water soluble free radical quencher, was examined with regard to carbon tetra-chloride-induced lipid peroxidation and in vivo aging. Carbon tetrachloride, a well-known free radical inducer, caused marked increases in the ration of oxidized/reduced vitamin C only …
