Discipline Strategies, Gender, And Disabilities That Impact The High School Graduation Rates Of African American Students With Special Needs., Danielle Corbie-Archey

Dissertations (2016-Present)

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if discipline strategies, gender, and disabilities impact the successful cohort graduation of African American students with special needs. While much research has been conducted to investigate the achievement gap and discipline gap, there is a paucity of research on how discipline affects the graduation rate of this population. Furthermore, this research is also to expose the inequities within the special education system. A quantitative research design was selected to study the graduation rates of African American students over the past years from 2017 to 2020. For this study, data regarding Five-Year …

Self-Efficacy Perceptions Of Middle School Reading Teachers In Majority Minority Inclusive Classrooms On Their Ability To Achieve Students Success., Debra Jean Lewis

Dissertations (2016-Present)

According to the U.S. Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2022), the number of students who require special accommodations in the classroom continues to increase. Because studies have shown that positive outcomes for students are directly linked to the self-efficacy of educators (Lotter et al., 2018; Neugebauer et al., 2019), educators who serve these populations must possess high levels of positive self-efficacy to handle the challenges associated with inclusive settings and specialized skills needed to achieve student success. The purpose of this study, which was guided and supported by the Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986), was to …

Police Brutality In The United States Of America And Nigeria; A Comparative Analysis, Oludayo Philips Famakin-Johnson

Dissertations (2016-Present)

The recent spate of incidents regarding excessive use of force by law enforcement in the United States against mostly unarmed African Americans has elicited protests across the country. The ensuing outrage about police brutality brought to national attention the discriminatory practices in the criminal justice system. It also demonstrated that human rights violations by law enforcement are not an exclusive experience of developing nations, which are expected to look up to countries like the United States as a model for standard policing. Extant research, however, indicates excessive use of force is a common phenomenon in every country, including the United …

An Examination Of Public-School Discipline Policies And Implications For African American Students Within A Texas School District, Demeka Demeka Simmons

Dissertations (2016-Present)

National data illustrates that the use of exclusionary discipline practices has resulted in disproportionality and overrepresentation in school discipline. Additionally, research also illustrates that African Americans have been overrepresented in exclusionary discipline at higher rates than their White counterparts. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in the percent of exclusionary discipline practices between African American students and White students based upon school district setting within Texas. The researcher analyzed archival data from 673 students in grades 3-12 enrolled in a Texas public school. The statistical tests used in the analysis of …

A Mixed Method-Approach To Exploring Human Organ Trafficking And Its Policy Implications, Jeslyn Huynh Aug 2022

A Mixed Method-Approach To Exploring Human Organ Trafficking And Its Policy Implications, Jeslyn Huynh

Dissertations (2016-Present)

Human organ trafficking, which involves the exploitation, coercion, illegally purchasing or selling of organs, has become a primary international concern. According to the United Nations, legally available organs for transplants only accommodate roughly 10% of the global industry demand. The shortage in organ supply means a new patient is added to the waiting list every 10 minutes worldwide even as 20 patients die every day in the United States alone waiting for an available organ. Previous researchers have found empirical support for significant relationships between human organ trafficking and its adverse globalized effects. Using primary and secondary data, the main …

Parental Pains Of Imprisonment: A Critical Qualitative Examination Of Reentry Into Family Life, Mitchel B. Michael

Dissertations (2016-Present)

The purpose of this study is to grasp and become better informed about the experiences of formerly incarcerated mothers and fathers transitioning from correctional facilities (i.e., local jails, state & federal prisons) back into family life. Lacking in criminological literature on prisoner reentry is the intersection of parenthood and post-incarceration reintegration. Since available research often focuses on maternal and paternal reentry separately, this study encapsulates both to provide an in-depth analysis of experiences across race and gender. To gauge perspectives and experiences in-depth, this study is grounded in qualitative/triangulated methodologies. The data and findings from this study aim to assist …

Police Militarization And Overuse Of Force: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Paramilitary Units And Society, Ronald R. Burnett

Dissertations (2016-Present)

The role of the police is to maintain social order and safety through the enforcement of law. They investigate, prevent, and detect criminal activity. However, the problem with police protection today is overuse of force which often comes through the term militarism regarding agency tenets and dogma. Also, social media has focused on police overuse of force, exacerbating race riots and retaliatory police killings. Because of this, police reform has become a significant concern, not only in the United States but also abroad. The methodological approach for this dissertation is a quantitative analysis, data used is secondary, statistical procedure is …

Terrorism: A Case Study Of The Global Security Threat Of Boko Haram And The Isis Alliance In Nigeria, Emmanuel Ben-Edet

Dissertations (2016-Present)

The literature on terrorism indicates that religion, cultures of origin, and environmental factors play globally critical roles in the emergence of terrorist groups worldwide. Terrorists use violence and threats to strike fear and intimidate people and governments into pursuing their religious, political, and ideological goals. One of the deadliest jihadist groups, Boko Haram, emerged in the early 2000s with a jihadist agenda mainly focused on Nigeria’s Islamization. In 2009, it launched violent attacks in Nigeria, which is Africa’s largest economy, and currently controls a large swathe of territory in its northeastern part. In its desire to create a caliphate, Boko …
