Storyville: Discourses In Southern Musicians' Autobiographies, Matthew Daniel Sutton Jan 2011

Storyville: Discourses In Southern Musicians' Autobiographies, Matthew Daniel Sutton

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This study utilizes many of the tools of the literary critic to identify and analyze the discursive conventions in autobiographies by American vernacular musicians who came of age in the American South during the era of enforced racial segregation. Through this textual analysis, we can appreciate this seemingly amorphous collection of books as a continuing conversation, where descriptions of the South and its music by turns confirm, contradict, and complicate each other. Ultimately, the dozens of southern musician autobiographies published in the last fifty years engage in a valuable and revealing dialogue, creating a virtual "Storyville"; ostensibly disparate works share …

Quantum Turbulence In Two Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates, Bo Zhang Jan 2011

Quantum Turbulence In Two Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates, Bo Zhang

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

We examine the energy cascades and quantum vortex structures in two-dimensional quantum turbulence through a special unitary time evolution algorithm. An early attempt at using the Lattice Boltzmann Method proved successful in correctly representing some features of the Nonlinear Schrodinger System (NLS), such as the phase shift following the one-dimensional soliton-soliton collision, as well as the two-dimentional modulation instability. However, to accurately evaluate NLS, the implicit Euler method is required to resolve the time evolution, which is computationally expensive. A more accurate and efficient method, the Quantum Lattice Gas model is employed to simulate the quantum turbulence governed by the …

Liberty, Bondage, And The Pursuit Of Happiness: The Free Black Expulsion Law And Self-Enslavement In Virginia, 1806--1864, Edward Downing Maris-Wolf Jan 2011

Liberty, Bondage, And The Pursuit Of Happiness: The Free Black Expulsion Law And Self-Enslavement In Virginia, 1806--1864, Edward Downing Maris-Wolf

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation seeks to explain why more than 110 African American individuals proposed to enslave themselves (and, in some cases, their children as well) in Virginia from 1854 to 1864. I examine the act of the Virginia legislature in 1856 "providing for the voluntary enslavement of the free negroes of the commonwealth" and suggest that this law provided some free Afro-Virginian individuals with an alternative to removal from the state and separation from their families (as called for by the sporadically enforced 1806 expulsion law, passed in part to discourage manumissions). I argue that if receiving legal freedom threatened a …

Microscopic Dynamics And Transport Of Hydrogen In Proton Conducting Oxides, Erik J. Spahr Jan 2011

Microscopic Dynamics And Transport Of Hydrogen In Proton Conducting Oxides, Erik J. Spahr

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The microscopic motion of hydrogen in solid oxides plays an important role in defect migration and reaction processes. Understanding the vibrational dynamics associated with both hydrogen-oxygen (O-H) bonds and the surrounding ionic environment allows one to better characterize these fundamental interactions. This thesis presents a comprehensive investigation into the vibrational decay dynamics of O-H and O-D stretch modes in crystalline oxides using time-resolved infrared pump-probe spectroscopy.;Measurements of the vibrational lifetimes of hydrogen related local modes in potassium tantalate (KTaO3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) show that the localized O-H vibration is very closely tied to proton transport. In KTaO3 we …

Jealous Neighbors: Rivalry And Alliance Among The Native Communities Of Detroit, 1701--1766, Andrew Keith Sturtevant Jan 2011

Jealous Neighbors: Rivalry And Alliance Among The Native Communities Of Detroit, 1701--1766, Andrew Keith Sturtevant

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Between the founding of the French post of Detroit in 1701 and the end of Pontiac's War in 1766, several native American peoples settled in distinct clusters around the French (and later British post) near current-day Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. Focusing on the interactions among these communities, this dissertation makes two interrelated arguments. It first argues that, although these peoples had been challenged and changed by the forces of colonialism during the seventeenth century, they nonetheless emerged from that century as discrete ethnic, social, and political entities, rather than shattered or disintegrated refugees. A set of interconnected, mutually constituting, …

Enhanced Field Emission From Vertically Oriented Graphene By Thin Solid Film Coatings, Michael Bagge-Hansen

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Recent progress and a coordinated national research program have brought considerable effort to bear on the synthesis and application of carbon nanostructures for field emission. at the College of William and Mary, we have developed field emission arrays of vertically oriented graphene (carbon nanosheets, CNS) that have demonstrated promising cathode performance, delivering emission current densities up to 2 mA/mm2 and cathode lifetime > 800 hours. The work function ( & phis;) of CNS and other carbonaceous cathode materials has been reported to be &phis;∼4.5-5.1 eV. The application of low work function thin films can achieve several orders of magnitude enhancement of …

The Development And Application Of An Antibody-Based Biosensor For The Detection Of The Petroleum-Derived Compounds, Candace Rae Spier

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Petroleum is one of the most important natural resources, but can also be problematic to environmental and human health. Petroleum is comprised of thousands of compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocycles, some of which are toxic and/or carcinogenic. Traditional analytical methods for environmental monitoring of low-level PAHs are time-consuming labor-intensive, and often laboratory-bound. Efforts to achieve timely, sensitive, and accurate analysis of PAHs in the field have become a priority for environmental research and monitoring. Antibody-based biosensors are presently being developed for environmental analysis. Anti-PAH antibody molecules can be coupled with electronic transducers to provide new biosensor technology …

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Fecal Coliform Distribution In Virginia Coastal Waters, Jie Huang Jan 2011

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Fecal Coliform Distribution In Virginia Coastal Waters, Jie Huang

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The collection of fecal coliform (FC) monitoring data in shellfish growing waters is primarily to assess public health risks from consumption of contaminated product. The data is also commonly used to assess the potential sources and loads of bacteria entering the aquatic system. This project is intended to extend traditional methods of developing these assessments, by applying an inverse modeling approach to improve the estimation of FC loads in the small watersheds typically contributing to shellfish growing waters in Virginia. Many fecal contamination studies in lower Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, have conveniently focused on analyses over relatively small spatial and temporal …

Steadfast In Their Ways: New England Colonists, Indian Wars, And The Persistence Of Culture, 1675-1715, David Michael Corlett

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The Indian wars of early New England were traumatic events. During King Philip's, King William's, and Queen Anne's Wars (1675 to 1715) dozens of towns sustained attacks, and English communities and their inhabitants were buffeted and challenged by the experience. The scholarship on colonial warfare and New England as a whole has focused on change and development that occurred as a result of these wars. War places great stress on individuals and societies, forcing them to act in new ways and often to reevaluate and abandon old habits. New Englanders and their communities did change dramatically as a result of …

Molecular Genetic Studies Of Hematodinium Sp., A Parasitic Dinoflagellate Of The Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Katrina M. Pagenkopp Lohan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Economically viable fisheries for the American blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, occur in the USA from Delaware Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately, a number of factors, including overexploitation, degraded habitats, and disease, have contributed to the decline of blue crab populations in the USA. In April 2008, the Secretary of Commerce declared the blue crab fishery in the Chesapeake Bay a "commercial fishery disaster." One factor potentially contributing to the decline of blue crab populations in high salinity waters is infection with Hematodinium sp., a parasitic dinoflagellate, which can cause significant mortalities in blue crab populations. Since the first …

Academic Optimism And Instructional Leadership In Urban Elementary Schools, Angela M. Allen Jan 2011

Academic Optimism And Instructional Leadership In Urban Elementary Schools, Angela M. Allen

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In response to the increase in accountability, based on federal and state legislation, educators have searched for factors to positively impact student achievement. The Coleman Report (1966) stated that student socioeconomic status was the greatest predictor of academic success. Researchers and educators alike have worked to demonstrate that other factors within a school's control may be powerful predictors as well and may assist schools in overcoming this environmental obstacle. The purpose of this study was to examine academic optimism as a construct consisting of academic emphasis, collective efficacy, and trust in students and parents and their relationship to instructional leadership …
