Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The composition of the United States population and its workforce is changing rapidly with a projected increase from 249 million in 1990 to 355 million by the year 2040. The majority white population is projected to only grow by 25 percent during this time period while the Latino, and Hispanic populations in the United States are projected to increase by 187 percent. Consequently, the current minorities will constitute more than half of the nation's total population by mid century and comprise a disproportionately large segment of the workforce. as a result of these changing demographics and increasing economic globalization, America's …

Algorithms For Operations On Probability Distributions In A Computer Algebra System, Diane Lynn Evans Jan 2001

Algorithms For Operations On Probability Distributions In A Computer Algebra System, Diane Lynn Evans

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In mathematics and statistics, the desire to eliminate mathematical tedium and facilitate exploration has lead to computer algebra systems. These computer algebra systems allow students and researchers to perform more of their work at a conceptual level. The design of generic algorithms for tedious computations allows modelers to push current modeling boundaries outward more quickly.;Probability theory, with its many theorems and symbolic manipulations of random variables is a discipline in which automation of certain processes is highly practical, functional, and efficient. There are many existing statistical software packages, such as SPSS, SAS, and S-Plus, that have numeric tools for statistical …

Ultrasonographic Measurement Of Periodontal Attachment Levels, John Edward Lynch Jan 2001

Ultrasonographic Measurement Of Periodontal Attachment Levels, John Edward Lynch

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Periodontal disease is one of the two major causes of tooth loss today, and has been associated with several systemic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Unfortunately, the most widely used diagnostic tool for assessment of periodontal diseases, measurement of periodontal attachment loss with a manual probe, may overestimate attachment loss by as much as 2mm in untreated sites, while underestimating attachment loss by an even greater margin following treatment. Manual probing is also invasive, which causes patient discomfort.;This work describes the development and testing of an ultrasonographic periodontal probe designed to replace manual probing. …

Effects Of Humic Acids And Salinity On Pesticide Bioavailability And Toxicity As Estimated By Spme And Toxicity Tests, Laurent C. Mézin Jan 2001

Effects Of Humic Acids And Salinity On Pesticide Bioavailability And Toxicity As Estimated By Spme And Toxicity Tests, Laurent C. Mézin

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The interactive effects of humic acids (HAs) and salinity on the bioavailability and toxicity of the pesticides chlorpyrifos and 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) were investigated. The effects of various HAs on the toxicity of chlorpyrifos were initially assessed with the chronic MicrotoxRTM test. Environmentally relevant concentrations of Aldrich, Peat, Leonardite and Suwannee River HAs had no significant effect on the toxicity of either chlorpyrifos or copper (Cu), the test's positive control. as reductions in contaminant toxicity had previously been reported for some contaminants by HAs, it appeared that salinity might be a mitigating factor. Thus salinity effects were further investigated with Aldrich …

Characterizing And Monitoring Changes In State Of Polymers During Cure And Use -Aging, Andrew Orschel Meyer Jan 2001

Characterizing And Monitoring Changes In State Of Polymers During Cure And Use -Aging, Andrew Orschel Meyer

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Multi Angle Laser Light Scattering (MALLS) and Frequency Dependent Electromagnetic Sensing (FDEMS) provide unique characterizations of polymer systems during cure and use-aging. This research illustrates how MALLS is an extremely accurate technique for absolute characterization of macromolecules, giving molecular weight and size information that other widely used and accepted techniques are incapable of measuring. Application of MALLS to monitoring the changing state of a polyamide-11 system in a water aging environment led to the discovery of an equilibrium molecular weight which is the result of two competing reactions, hydrolysis-degradation and a newly discovered recombination-polymerization reaction. The discovery of this recombination …

Qcd, Deep Inelastic Scattering, Confinement And Quark -Hadron Duality In 1 + 1 Dimensions, Zoltan Steven Batiz Jan 2001

Qcd, Deep Inelastic Scattering, Confinement And Quark -Hadron Duality In 1 + 1 Dimensions, Zoltan Steven Batiz

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

We study the onset of scaling in deep inelastic scattering from quark-antiquark bound states (mesons) using covariant models. Assuming some simple non-confining interactions in 1 + 1 dimensions, we prove the self-consistency of the covariant models. The counting rules related to charge conservation, and to momentum conservation are the same as the bound state normalization condition. We also find a qualitatively correct quark distribution function. We investigate duality for the case of QCD2 ('t Hooft model). Solving some few body equations, we clarify the concept of confinement and find a relationship between confinement and quark-hadron duality. to understand how this …

"The Freemasonry Of The Race": The Cultural Politics Of Ritual, Race, And Place In Postemancipation Virginia, Corey D. B. Walker Jan 2001

"The Freemasonry Of The Race": The Cultural Politics Of Ritual, Race, And Place In Postemancipation Virginia, Corey D. B. Walker

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

African American cultural and social history has neglected to interrogate fully a crucial facet of African American political, economic, and social life: African American Freemasonry. "The Freemasonry of the Race": The Cultural Politics of Ritual, Race, and Place in Postemancipation Virginia seeks to remedy this neglect. This project broadly situates African American Freemasonry in the complex and evolving relations of power, peoples, and polities of the Atlantic world. The study develops an interpretative framework that not only recognizes the organizational and institutional aspects of African American Freemasonry, but also interprets it as a discursive space in and through which articulations …

Ged Diploma Graduates: Performance, Persistence, And Attrition In Four -Year Postsecondary Education Institutions, Monica A. Osei

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Individuals who pass the General Educational Development (GED) exam often pursue higher education. Although GED diploma students tend to enroll in two-year colleges, an increasing number are enrolling in four-year postsecondary education institutions. GED diploma college students are characterized as nontraditional students and usually possess risk factors that impede academic performance and cause attrition. Collective data and analysis of their academic performance and persistence and attrition behavior is needed to determine their success in attaining a bachelor's degree.;The purpose of this study was to analyze the academic performance and persistence and attrition behavior of GED diploma undergraduates who applied directly …

Molecular Characterization Of Cultured Perkinsus Marinus Isolates, Gwynne D. Brown Jan 2001

Molecular Characterization Of Cultured Perkinsus Marinus Isolates, Gwynne D. Brown

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Perkinsus marinus is the causative agent of the oyster disease Dermo in the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica. In vitro propagation of the parasite has led to the establishment of multiple isolates by several investigators. Little work, however, has been done to characterize different isolates. In this study multiple isolates were examined for genetic and biochemical diversity. at two loci, the ITS region and the ATAN region, there was as much intra-isolate genetic variation among DNA sequences of some isolates as there was inter-isolate variation. Variation was also observed at a third loci, a subtilisin-like serine protease gene. This is the …

Broadcast Distributed Shared Memory, Philip Ragner Auld Jan 2001

Broadcast Distributed Shared Memory, Philip Ragner Auld

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Distributed shared memory (DSM) provides the illusion of shared memory processing to programs running on physically distributed systems. Many of these systems are connected by a broadcast medium network such as Ethernet. In this thesis, we develop a weakly coherent model for DSM that takes advantage of hardware-level broadcast. We define the broadcast DSM model (BDSM) to provide fine-grained sharing of user-defined locations. Additionally, since extremely weak DSM models are difficult to program, BDSM provides effective synchronization operations that allow it to function as a stronger memory. We show speedup results for a test suite of parallel programs and compare …
