Measuring Certain Cognitive Traits In Depressed Mothers And Their Children: A Controlled Study, James Allen Correll
Measuring Certain Cognitive Traits In Depressed Mothers And Their Children: A Controlled Study, James Allen Correll
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study used self-report measures of self-esteem, locus of control, and anxiety to contrast the thinking styles of depressed mothers and their children. The resulting profiles were then compared with those of a control group of non-depressed mothers and children in an effort to document differences on the dependent variable measures.;Mothers were admitted to the depressed group if they were currently in treatment for either major depression or dysthymia. Significant depressive symptoms also had to be documented in a self-report depression inventory. Mothers for the control group could have no history of depression or other significant psychiatric disorder.;Children in each …
Middle School Innovation: Interpretation And Assessment, William Bryant Williams Jr.
Middle School Innovation: Interpretation And Assessment, William Bryant Williams Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purposes of this study were to present a historical interpretation and explanation of the middle school innovation and to examine the characteristics of model middle schools. In light of the available body of knowledge is the middle school a reasonable innovation to sustain and implement? A subsidiary purpose was to determine if there were any consensually agreed upon characteristics. The main research question is:;A comprehensive review of the literature was completed to provide the history of middle level education. Beginning with an explanation of the work of the Committee of Ten in 1893, the study provided a report on …
A Study Of The Relationship Of Social Planning Processes To The Social Competence Of Learning-Disabled Adolescents, Roberta Swithers Barton
A Study Of The Relationship Of Social Planning Processes To The Social Competence Of Learning-Disabled Adolescents, Roberta Swithers Barton
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study addressed three questions: (1) Are social planning processes, i.e., means-ends thinking, knowledge of social conventions, and social schematic ability, related to each other? (2) Are they related to the perceived social competence of learning disabled (SLD) adolescents? (3) Are they determinants of differences in perceived social competence?;Martin Ford's (1982) Social Competence Nomination Form (SCNF) assessed the social competence of 59 SLD adolescents from The New Community School in Richmond, Virginia. Extreme groups of SCNF scorers were compared on three social planning skill measures: Means-Ends Problem-Solving Procedure (MEPS) (Spivack, Shure & Platt, 1981) and the Comprehension and Picture Arrangement …
Factors Accounting For The Development Of The Virginia Community College System, Patsy Rainey Joyner
Factors Accounting For The Development Of The Virginia Community College System, Patsy Rainey Joyner
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the facts regarding the rhetoric of democratization and broadening the base of higher education with reference to the development of the Virginia Community College System. In a state with a tradition of conservatism and elitism toward public education, this study sought to identify those factors which accounted for the adoption of a populist notion, the community college system.;Established in 1966, the system was late in coming compared to other states. The first continuously operating two-year public college was established in Joliet, Illinois, in 1901, and California, along with other states, soon followed. …
The Origins And Development Of Virginia's Student Assessment Policy: A Case Study, Serbrenia J. Sims
The Origins And Development Of Virginia's Student Assessment Policy: A Case Study, Serbrenia J. Sims
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to review the historical origins and chronology of the student assessment movement in the United States and to describe and analyze the development of Virginia's higher education student assessment policy within that movement. "Student assessment," the process of determining whether or not students have met educational goals set by their programs of study, institutions of higher education, or the state is a relatively new event in Virginia. Major participants involved in the passage and implementation of Virginia's policy were identified from historical documents and interviewed based on their specific areas of knowledge.;From the interviews …

Local Density Approximation Study Of Transition Andf-Electron Materials, Zhi Wei Lu
Local Density Approximation Study Of Transition Andf-Electron Materials, Zhi Wei Lu
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The local density approximation (LDA) has been proved to be a powerful starting point for calculating electronic and structural properties for many real materials. We have studied the effects of particular forms of exchange-correlation potentials (the X{dollar}\alpha{dollar} and Hedin-Lundqvist form) upon the structural properties for the 3d Ti and 4d Zr using a highly accurate linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method. The calculated equilibrium volumes differ by 6-8% for these two forms (with X{dollar}\alpha{dollar} results in better agreement with experiment) with proportional differences in other structural properties, which we take to be an indication of the intrinsic reliability of the …
A Measurement Of The Decay Rate For The Process Kaon(L) Going To Positive Muon Negative Muon, Christopher John Kenney
A Measurement Of The Decay Rate For The Process Kaon(L) Going To Positive Muon Negative Muon, Christopher John Kenney
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
A sample of 87 events of the GIM suppressed decay K$\sb{\rm L} \to \mu\sp+\mu\sp-$ were observed in an experiment performed in 1988 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Concurrently, 8,887 examples of the CP-violating decay K$\sb{\rm L} \to \pi\sp+\pi\sp-$ were also seen. The apparatus consisted of a double-magnet spectrometer as well as electromagnetic and muon detector systems. From the previously measured branching ratio for K$\sb{\rm L} \to \pi\sp+\pi\sp-$ and the different instrumental acceptances of the detector for the two decays, the data sample was normalized to the effective number of K$\sb{\rm L}$ decays observed. A value for the ratio (K$\sb{\rm L} …
