The Effects Of Role Modeling As A Technique In Counteracting Sexual Stereotyping In The Occupational Election Of High School Girls, Nancy Eddins Helms
The Effects Of Role Modeling As A Technique In Counteracting Sexual Stereotyping In The Occupational Election Of High School Girls, Nancy Eddins Helms
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Stereotyping of jobs by sex has a restricting effect on both sexes, but it has had a disproportionately negative impact on women. The need for methods to counteract occupational stereotyping is widely recognized (Steiger and Schlesinger, 1979; Monthly Labor Review, 1976). Since role modeling has been found in many settings to be a forceful factor in modifying behavior, Bandura's (1971) observational learning through role modeling formed the rationale for the study. This study proposes to answer the question, "Will using female role models in nontraditional careers for women affect the choice of high school girls in selecting nontraditional occupations for …

A Study Of Nutritional Requirements Of The Larvae Of The American Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica), Fu-Lin E. Chu
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study is to obtain information for the formulation of artificial diets for larvae of the American oyster (Crassostrea virginica) and to test procedures related to presenting these diets to the oyster larvae. In order to determine the nutrient components usually provided in larval diets, biochemical analyses of lipids and fatty acids, proteins and amino acids and polysaccharide carbohydrates were performed on five algae species used as a food source for oyster larvae. These algae are Chlorella sp., Pyramimonas virginica, Pseudoisochrysis paradoxa, Pavlova (Monochrysis) lutheri and Isochrysis galbana. The biochemical analyses indicate that the nutritional value of …

Adenine Nucleotide Levels And Adenylate Energy Charge In Zostera Marina (Eelgrass): Determination And Application, Damon A. Delistraty
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
An analytical technique was developed to measure adenine nucleotide levels (ATP, ADP, AMP) and adenylate energy charge (EC) in Zostera marina (eelgrass), a submerged marine angiosperm. A tissue comparison and seasonal survey provide baseline information on natural adenylate variability. The methodology developed can be suitably adapted to other macrophyte species as well. Plants were frozen, lyophilized, scraped free of epiphytes, and homogenized. Adenylates were extracted with boiling 1 mM EDTA + 5% (w/v) PVPP (pH 7.6), and assayed by enzymic conversion of AMP and ADP to ATP, followed by quantitative analysis of ATP via the firefly bioluminescent reaction. ATP, ADP, …

"The Money Our Fathers Were Accustomed To" : Banks And Political Culture In Rutherford County, Tennessee, 1800-1850, Carroll Van West
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The creation of a new political culture, comprised of the Democratic and Whig parties, in Rutherford County, Tennessee, resulted from a community division over the desirability of both political and economic change. Before the early 1830s, Rutherford County had been a Democratic party stronghold. But when, in light of the community's own economic stagnation, those who doubted the Democrats' wisdom in opposing a national bank, joined John Bell and Hugh Lawson White's political revolt in 1835, a new way of politics soon appeared in Rutherford County. The Depression of 1837, which severely rocked Rutherford Countians, turned more "true" Jackson men …

The Prediction Of Academic Performance Of Open Admissions Students At Virginia State University, Joseph T. Tambe
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to identify factors contributing to success, nonsuccess and, withdrawal of open admissions students at Virginia State University. The primary objective was to develop a means for predicting academic outcomes at the time of matriculation for each student in the open admissions program.;The students studied were entering freshmen who were underprepared to enter college. Ex post facto data used as predictors consisted of SAT scores, high school achievement, placement tests scores, and measures on student commitment, socioeconomic status, and student expectations regarding college life.;Using a total of 32 predictors and the criterion categories of successful …

Modernization In Colonial Massachusetts, 1630-1763, Ronald P. Dufour
Modernization In Colonial Massachusetts, 1630-1763, Ronald P. Dufour
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study is threefold. First, it explores the complex religious, social, political, and intellectual changes that coursed through Massachusetts society from 1630 to 1763. Second, it assesses the validity of sociological modernization theory as a means of studying colonial society. Finally, it develops a psychological theory of modernization. Sources include public records, books, pamphlets, and documents from the period, and standard secondary works.;Modernization involves the evolution of western society from a traditional life style reflecting predominantly local, family, and religious concerns, to patterns of existence characterized by centralized political forms, modern economic structures and values, and secular …
A [Mu]+Srstudy Of Uniaxial Stress Induced Symmetry Breaking In An Fe Single Crystal, Min. Namkung
A [Mu]+Srstudy Of Uniaxial Stress Induced Symmetry Breaking In An Fe Single Crystal, Min. Namkung
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
For the first time, external uniaxial stress has been used in a (mu)('+)SR experiment. The stress dependences of the following parameters were obtained for Fe crystals: the muon precessional frequency, (nu)(,(mu)), the transverse (longitudinal) depolarization rates, 1/T(,2) (1/T(,1)), and F(,T)/F(,L), the ratio of the probabilities for the muon to find domains with transverse/longitudinal fields. The shift in (nu)(,(mu)) was -0.34 (+OR-) 0.023 MHz per 100 micro-strain along the -axis. Changes in other parameters depend on the sample history but they, in general, increase with stress.;External stress changes the muon occupational probability at each site which significantly affects the dipolar field …
An Investigation Of Sand Transport Phenomena In The Rappahannock River Estuary, Virginia, Charles Joseph Natale
An Investigation Of Sand Transport Phenomena In The Rappahannock River Estuary, Virginia, Charles Joseph Natale
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Quantitative evidence supplied by bottom sediment textural analysis, Fourier grain-shape analysis and Q-mode factor analysis indicate that river-borne sand-sized sediment originating in the upper reaches of the Rappahannock is actively transported downstream and ultimately delivered to the estuarine sediment regime. Current velocity observations in the upper estuary as well as suspended sediment concentrations measured at stream gaging stations, indicate that short-term extreme hydrological events such as periodic river flooding provide a plausible transport mechanism to move river-borne sands into the estuarine sediment regime.Events of this nature can disrupt average partly-mixed estuarine circulation patterns by displacing the salt-wedge to a more …

Rotc Continuation Model : A Model For Predicting Whether Army Rotc Cadets Will Terminate With The Basic Course Or Continue Into The Advanced Course, George Napoleon. Ivey
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine whether Army ROTC cadets who enter the Advanced Course differ significantly in certain selected variables from cadets who choose to terminate the ROTC program with the Basic Course. Using theoretical constructs from Schoenherr's and Greeley's (1974) General Role Commitment Model and the Card et al. (1975) ROTC/Army Career Commitment Model, a prediction model was developed for the present study, the ROTC Continuation Model. The ROTC Continuation Model was used to predict ROTC continuation in a single Army ROTC Program. All (803) cadets enrolled in this specific program from school years 1974-75 through …
