Addressing The Assessment Of Professionalism In Physical Education Teacher Education: A Multi-Case Study Of Nationally Accredited Programs, Brandy Michelle Lynch

Dissertations

Many nationwide reform efforts in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) have revolved around the development of the National Standards for PETE, which outline essential knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of successful physical educators (Metzler & Tjeerdsma, 2000a). With the inclusion of Standard Six in the 3rd edition of the Initial PETE Standards (National Association of Sport & Physical Education [NASPE], 2008), programs have been challenged to integrate, teach, monitor, and assess teacher candidates’ (TCs’) dispositions in systematic ways. According to the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), programs seeking to achieve or maintain accreditation have the freedom to …

Interindividual Neuromuscular Characteristics And Their Relationships To Running Economy, Barbara Jean Schornstein Dec 2017

Interindividual Neuromuscular Characteristics And Their Relationships To Running Economy, Barbara Jean Schornstein

Dissertations

Running economy (RE) has previously been shown to be associated with endurance running performance. Neuromuscular characteristics, such as the activity of lower-extremity biarticular muscles during stance, have shown both positive and negative relationships with RE. That is, a positive relationship would indicate as there is more muscular excitation, more oxygen would be used for running, leading to a performance detriment. These conflicting relationships with neuromuscular activity have used two separate electromyographic (EMG) analyses, as there is no gold standard for the processing of EMG data. The first study was performed in order to compare the EMG analysis methods of each …

Coaches’ Perceptions On The Sustainability Of Select Nonrevenue, Olympic Ncaa Sports As Viewed Through Stakeholder Theory, Dean M. Ekeren May 2017

Coaches’ Perceptions On The Sustainability Of Select Nonrevenue, Olympic Ncaa Sports As Viewed Through Stakeholder Theory, Dean M. Ekeren

Dissertations

In recent years, increasing revenues to the top NCAA athletic programs has accelerated an athletic “arms race” among universities, where coach salaries escalate, new facilities are built, existing facilities undergo massive renovations, and amenities and services are added for athletes, all to attract top recruits and new donors. Although sponsors and broadcast deals provide huge sources of revenue to these institutions, the majority of athletic departments rely on subsidies from the university to meet the increasing demands required to remain competitively relevant. Many stakeholder groups of intercollegiate athletics are becoming increasingly concerned that the financial pressures associated with sustaining the …

The Influence Of Participation In Socially Engaging Or Complex Physical Activities On Executive Function Among Older Adults, Lyndsie M. Koon May 2017

The Influence Of Participation In Socially Engaging Or Complex Physical Activities On Executive Function Among Older Adults, Lyndsie M. Koon

Dissertations

The preservation of cognitive function is of particular importance for the maintenance of independence and functional autonomy for older adults (Hertzog, Kramer, Wilson, & Lindenberger, 2008). Physical activity is a behavioral intervention that contributes to mental and physical health; it has also been found to promote cognitive function across a lifespan. Cognitive processes that assist with goal-directed behavior to successfully complete everyday tasks known as executive functions are susceptible to physical activity participation especially among youth, adolescent, and older adult populations. Various aspects of the physical activity context might help mediate improvements to executive function including the task complexity of …

Fan Motives For Identifying With Professional Tennis Players, Alex Yakon Rondon-Azcarate

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine motivations used by tennis fans in identifying with professional tennis players and thereby developing fan loyalty and support. No prior work has focused on fan motivations toward individual players in an individual sport. This non-experimental study design used an online survey technique to solicit responses from adult tennis fans through a variety of tennis organizations, tennis clubs, tennis training facilities, and tennis websites and blogs. Surveys responses were solicited from January through February 2017. Of the original 460 total respondents, 28% (n = 101) reported having no favorite professional tennis player and …

Physical Education Teacher Education Student Teaching Placement Procedures, Leann Elizabeth Kesselring May 2017

Physical Education Teacher Education Student Teaching Placement Procedures, Leann Elizabeth Kesselring

Dissertations

The student teaching experience is widely regarded as the most formative aspect of a teacher preparation program. This practicum is the final opportunity to occupationally socialize a teacher candidate with the attitudes and values of the teacher preparation program. Knowing this, careful selection of student teaching placements is imperative. However, little research has been conducted regarding placement procedures in general teacher education, and even less in physical education teacher education (PETE). The purpose of this paper was to explore placement procedures of PETE teacher candidates in CAEP accredited programs at state classified universities/colleges within the United States. The research was …
