Knowing Their Story: The Experiences Of Perinatal Nurses Who Care For Women Using Marijuana During Pregnancy, Darci Jo Mccall Dec 2021

Knowing Their Story: The Experiences Of Perinatal Nurses Who Care For Women Using Marijuana During Pregnancy, Darci Jo Mccall

Dissertations

While remaining federally illegal, the use of both medical and recreational marijuana in the United States continues to rise as individual state laws become more permissive and its use more socially acceptable. Paralleling this trend, the use of marijuana during pregnancy is also increasing. However legally defined, marijuana use during pregnancy is discouraged and has been associated with serious health concerns for the mother and her infant. Its use during pregnancy is challenging for healthcare providers as it is not well researched and its effects are not clearly understood. While the experiences of perinatal nurses working with women affected by …

Exploration Of Clinical Judgment Within Junior Level Baccalaureate Nursing Students Utilizing A Modified Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric, Christine Zamaripa Aug 2021

Exploration Of Clinical Judgment Within Junior Level Baccalaureate Nursing Students Utilizing A Modified Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric, Christine Zamaripa

Dissertations

Clinical judgment is considered a core competency of nursing care as 46% of nursing tasks performed by new graduate nurses require the use of clinical judgment (National Council of State Boards of Nursing [NCSBN], 2018). With 23% of new nurses not demonstrating entry-level competency, patient safety is at risk (Kavanagh & Szweda, 2017). These deficits are driving changes to national licensure board examinations to focus on the level of clinical judgment new graduates demonstrate (NCSBN, 2018). The purposes of this non-experimental exploratory study were (a) to explore the validity and reliability of the Modified Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric (MLCJR) developed …

Nurse-Midwifery Student Self-Confidence And Anxiety When Using Objective Structured Clinical Examinations As A Clinical Competency Assessment Strategy, Deborah Anne Duran-Snell Aug 2021

Nurse-Midwifery Student Self-Confidence And Anxiety When Using Objective Structured Clinical Examinations As A Clinical Competency Assessment Strategy, Deborah Anne Duran-Snell

Dissertations

Current evaluation of clinical competency in nurse-midwifery education programs lacks clarity and consistency and is often a subjective process using a variety of assessment strategies. Recognizing that no single assessment strategy can provide all the information required to assess something as complex as clinical performance, the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), when viewed alongside other forms of assessment, might be considered a valuable strategy for enhancing the assessment of nurse-midwifery student clinical competence and confidence. The main objective of this dissertation was to assess and compare self-reported confidence and anxiety levels of graduate nurse-midwifery students pre- and post-OSCE. This exploratory …

Non-Psychiatric Registered Nurses' Perceptions Of Caring For Persons With Mental Illness In A Non-Psychiatric Healthcare Setting, Debra Sue Ollila Aug 2021

Non-Psychiatric Registered Nurses' Perceptions Of Caring For Persons With Mental Illness In A Non-Psychiatric Healthcare Setting, Debra Sue Ollila

This study also sought to discover non-psychiatric nurses’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research study used qualitative descriptive phenomenology to explore the research phenomenon. Eight participants were interviewed virtually using a semi-structured interview guide with interview …

The Effect Of A Contextualized Dosage Calculation Learning Intervention On Pre-Nursing Students’ Math Self-Efficacy And Ability To Pass High Stakes Dosage Calculation Examination On First Attempt, Eileen Veronica Weatherby May 2021

The Effect Of A Contextualized Dosage Calculation Learning Intervention On Pre-Nursing Students’ Math Self-Efficacy And Ability To Pass High Stakes Dosage Calculation Examination On First Attempt, Eileen Veronica Weatherby

Dissertations

Many students in pre-licensure nursing programs struggle with calculating accurate medication dosages even though they meet the numeracy requirements for application to the nursing programs. Most pre-licensure programs require that nursing students pass dosage calculation exams at a specified level of accuracy before progressing to the next term. Students typically have three tries to pass at the specified level and should they not succeed, they must withdraw. If they wish to continue in the program, they must complete the requirements for re-entry which may include space availability restrictions. Factors influencing dosage calculation performance include fear of mathematics, low math self-efficacy, …

Establishing Guidelines For The Clinical Post-Conference: A Delphi Study, Staci Lynn Warnert May 2021

Establishing Guidelines For The Clinical Post-Conference: A Delphi Study, Staci Lynn Warnert

Dissertations

The clinical post-conference is an established component of nursing education; however, little research exists related to the clinical post-conference. This study sough to develop guidelines for use by nursing faculty to facilitate clinical post-conference and to determine perceived outcomes of clinical post-conferences in the overall goal of student nurse development of clinical competence. The Delphi method was used to obtain consensus about clinical post-conferences from full-time nursing faculty with experience using clinical post-conferences. Full-time nursing faculty with experience facilitating clinical post-conferences were sent three rounds of questionnaires. The Round 1 questionnaire consisted of open-ended questions asking about recommendations for the …

In addition, assimilation and white privilege were discussed due to compelling and varied responses from participants. The results …

Cognitive Aptitude As A Predictor Of Success In Associate Degree Nursing Programs, Nancy Brooks Leahy May 2021

Cognitive Aptitude As A Predictor Of Success In Associate Degree Nursing Programs, Nancy Brooks Leahy

Dissertations

Student success in nursing education is essential to supplement the healthcare workforce and sustain the delivery of safe and efficient nursing care. However, the loss of students who drop out or fail out of nursing programs is alarmingly high even though institutions have sought to identify the best candidates for admission to rigorous nursing curricula. While most nursing programs have used academic measures, such as grade point average or standardized testing to rank students for admission, these measures have not adequately captured the characteristics that students must possess to be successful. To further identify nonacademic attributes that enhance achievement, new …

Nursing Perceptions And Attitudes Toward Sex Trafficking: Does Victim Gender Matter?, Sarah Rapoza

Dissertations

Sex trafficking (ST) often goes unrecognized; yet, it is a pervasive issue that disproportionately affects marginalized populations. Sex trafficking involves the act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harboring, or receiving of persons for the purpose of commercial sex acts. As a result of ST, victims suffer adverse health effects and often present to healthcare facilities while still under control of their traffickers. Few healthcare personnel are aware trafficking is happening in their geographical areas and victims are rarely identified or offered assistance. The majority of studies and interventions related to ST focus on female victims despite evidence that males are also …
