BACKGROUND: Prenatal depression is a significant public health concern. OBJECTIVES: To contextualize the roles of zinc intake, psychosocial stress and baseline sociodemographic factors, as they inter-relate in the development of depressive symptoms, in a cohort of pregnant women from London (ON). HYPOTHESES: 1) Psychosocial stress serves as a partial mediator between baseline sociodemographic factors and zinc intake; 2) Zinc intake serves as a partial mediator between baseline sociodemographic factors and the development of depressive symptoms, and between psychosocial stress and the development of depressive symptoms. Early Onset Of Major Depressive Disorder And Its Consequences For Recurrence And Co-Morbidity: Contrasting The Experiences Of Single And Married Mothers, Carolyn S. Coppens

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the association of an early onset of major depressive disorder with the risk for recurrence of depression and psychiatric comorbidity is magnified among single mothers in contrast to married mothers. The data for this study were collected as part of a three-wave cohort study of 518 single and 502 married mothers in London, Ontario. The women were interviewed with the Michigan version of the Composite International Diagnostic Inventory. Results indicate that an early onset of depression was significantly associated with recurrence, but only modestly associated with other psychiatric comorbidity. Examined separately …
