High-Resolution Core-Level Spectroscopies Of Molecular Silicon Compounds Using Monochromatized Synchrotron Radiation, John D. Bozek Jan 1991

High-Resolution Core-Level Spectroscopies Of Molecular Silicon Compounds Using Monochromatized Synchrotron Radiation, John D. Bozek

Digitized Theses

High-resolution core-level photoabsorption, photoelectron and photoionization mass spectra of numerous substituted silane molecules have been measured in the gas phase around the Si 2p ionization edges using monochromatized synchrotron radiation. Photoabsorption spectra were also measured around the Si 2s ionization edges and the Cl 2p ionization edges of the chlorine-containing molecules. Multiple-scattering X{dollar}\alpha{dollar} calculations were performed to aid in the assignment of the peaks observed in the photoabsorption spectra. The chemical series approach, where the effects of small systematic chemical changes in the composition of the molecule under study on the observed spectra provide useful aids for assignments, has been …

Natural Lta Tumor Cell Resistance To Malignant Conversion By Oncogenesras Andmyc, Alan Bradley Tuck Jan 1991

Natural Lta Tumor Cell Resistance To Malignant Conversion By Oncogenesras Andmyc, Alan Bradley Tuck

Digitized Theses

A tumorigenic, non-metastatic murine fibroblast cell line (LTA) was here used to study aspects of natural cellular resistance to induction of progression to malignancy. The nature of LTA cell growth was established by testing both in vitro and in vivo. In vitro growth showed some but not all characteristic features of transformation (eg. cells showed little contact inhibition of cell growth and were able to multilayer, but were not serum independent). In vivo tumor growth was that of a benign (non-metastatic) fibrosarcoma. Attempts were made to induce LTA cell progression to malignancy by both epigenetic and genetic means. Treatment of …

Food Limitation And The Adaptive Significance Of Clutch Size In American Coots (Fulica Americana), Todd William Arnold Jan 1991

Food Limitation And The Adaptive Significance Of Clutch Size In American Coots (Fulica Americana), Todd William Arnold

Digitized Theses

For many species of birds, egg formation costs are considered important constraints on timing of breeding, clutch size, and egg size. For American Coots (Fulica americana), body reserves and current food availability are both thought to affect these aspects of reproduction. In order to test the egg formation hypothesis, I conducted numerous observational and manipulative experiments on wild, free-ranging American Coots. Clutch size declined with laying date in five out of six years, contrary to seasonal patterns of food availability in prairie wetlands. Clutch size increased during two of three years in response to supplemental feeding. Laying date was only …

Images Of Voice In "Paradise Lost", Elizabeth M. Sauer Jan 1991

Images Of Voice In "Paradise Lost", Elizabeth M. Sauer

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the relative status and authority of the poetic voices of Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained within a literary and socio-political context. The case against the monological function of the primary narrator has most recently been made by critics including Donald Bouchard and Jonathan Goldberg who discuss the dialogical nature of this speaker, and by Kathleen Swaim and Barbara Lewalski who examine the exchanges among the different narrators. Another scholar, Gordon Teskey, observes that before PL "few characters in non-dramatic literature appear as free as Milton's to choose their own story" (11). Milton's interpretive model of historical intervention …

The Effects Of Self-Referencing In The Processing Of Linear Ordering Relations, Hsiao H. D'Ailly Jan 1991

The Effects Of Self-Referencing In The Processing Of Linear Ordering Relations, Hsiao H. D'Ailly

Digitized Theses

The purpose of the present research was to investigate the effects of self referencing in the processing of linear ordering relations in a task designed to simulate certain aspects of classroom mathematics instruction. In each of three experiments, undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory psychology course were asked to read a series of paragraphs each of which contained a 5-term linear ordering relation (e.g., {dollar}\rm A>B>C>D>E).{dollar} After this information was encoded, subjects were asked to make pair-wise comparisons of these 5 terms. Two major factors were tested: the inclusion of a "You" term (Self-Referencing) among the …

Laser-Molecule Interactions And The Effects Of Permanent Dipoles, Anne E. Kondo Jan 1991

Laser-Molecule Interactions And The Effects Of Permanent Dipoles, Anne E. Kondo

Digitized Theses

The spectral and dynamic effects associated with a non-zero difference, d, between the permanent dipole moments of two molecular states involved in a transition, are investigated for a variety of electromagnetic field-molecule interactions. Both analytical and exact numerical techniques are used to solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation and to obtain the temporal populations of the molecular states and the associated absorption spectra, for molecular interactions with a Gaussian pulsed, or one or two continuous wave (CW), laser(s).;Analytical rotating wave approximation results are derived for a single CW laser interacting with a two-level d {dollar}\ne{dollar} 0 molecule with an excited state …

Technology, Common Inputs, And Public Policies In Developing Countries, Ka-Yiu Fung Jan 1991

Technology, Common Inputs, And Public Policies In Developing Countries, Ka-Yiu Fung

Digitized Theses

The thesis consists of three essays. In the first essay, a two-final-good and knowledge-based growth model is built to study the patterns of economic growth in a SOE. The source of economic growth is the introduction of new intermediate goods as a result of R&D, which in turn generates dynamic IRS in both the production of one final good and R&D. The results obtained in the model are consistent with intercountry differences in growth patterns.;The second essay constructs a simple model to study how technology transfer (through foreign direct investment or licensing of technology) affects R&D intensity of domestic firms …

Kinematic Waves And Governing Equations In Bubble Columns And Three-Phase Fluidized Beds, Lopez Alberto Soria Jan 1991

Kinematic Waves And Governing Equations In Bubble Columns And Three-Phase Fluidized Beds, Lopez Alberto Soria

Digitized Theses

New averaged topological equations (ATEs) were obtained from a geometric description of a dispersed two-phase flow using the derivatives of a multi-step and a multi-delta distribution functions as well as a local volume averaging technique. Similar distribution functions were also defined and combined for the obtention of averaged transport equations for multiphase systems considering relevant interfacial effects. A consistency test performed on the set of averaged transport equations shows that the approach followed renders a self-consistent set of governing equations for a multiphase system with an arbitrary number of phases and relevant interfacial effects. Combination of the ATEs and the …

Projection Presaturation: A New Approach To Producing Conformal Selective Excitation In Magnetic Resonance, Saryu Singh Jan 1991

Projection Presaturation: A New Approach To Producing Conformal Selective Excitation In Magnetic Resonance, Saryu Singh

Digitized Theses

In recent years, several techniques of volume-selective excitation for extracting signals from a chosen region in a large sample have appeared for various applications in magnetic resonance (MR). Most of these techniques suffer from, at least, the T{dollar}\sb2{dollar}-decay problem, which rules out their application for short T{dollar}\sb2{dollar} species. The remaining methods, while not suffering from the above limitation, are generally sensitive to errors in the radio frequency (rf) tip-angle and imperfections in rf profile, which cause inaccurate localization.;To overcome these problems, I have devised a new method for multi-dimensional spatial localization by accurate outer volume suppression. The method uses a …

The Fiction Of Fishing: Richard Brautigan's Metafictional Romance, Brian T. Way Jan 1991

The Fiction Of Fishing: Richard Brautigan's Metafictional Romance, Brian T. Way

Digitized Theses

The writings of Richard Brautigan achieved considerable popular and critical praise in the 1960s but were generally ignored or denounced thereafter. This dissertation offers a reassessment of Brautigan's oeuvre by advancing a contemporary reading of his works within the critical and cultural environment of his times. After a preliminary examination of So the Wind Won't Blow It All Away to illustrate the artful complexity of Brautigan's final work, the dissertation examines the critical and literary framework that surrounded Brautigan's earliest writings, submitting that his works are best understood in a postmodern critical context. Trout Fishing in America, A Confederate General …

Les Romans De Louis Guilloux Entre 1927 Et 1942: Aux Frontieres Du Populisme (French Text), Monica Lebron

Digitized Theses

In 1942, Louis Guilloux was awarded the Prix Populiste for Le Pain des reves, a novel which, along with the six which preceded it, is generally considered to be representative of the populist literary trend. Guilloux's novels are profoundly significant representations of historical events which took place during the first half of the 20th Century. The effect of periods of political turmoil upon society and the injustice brought down upon the working class figure prominently in Guilloux's novels.;Following two lines of development, the thesis studies the novels both in their generic relationships with populist literature and from the point of …

Evolving Policies And Institutional Arrangements In The Canadian Agri-Food Industry: An Analysis Of Differential Development Between The Dairy And Beef Livestock Sectors, Quentin P. Chiotti Jan 1991

Evolving Policies And Institutional Arrangements In The Canadian Agri-Food Industry: An Analysis Of Differential Development Between The Dairy And Beef Livestock Sectors, Quentin P. Chiotti

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the evolving policies and institutional arrangements in the Canadian agri-food industry; specifically an analysis of differential development between the dairy and beef livestock sectors. Moving beyond the pluralist and other alternative explanations for the development of marketing boards, an integrative theoretical framework which incorporates a broader conceptual and theoretical approach was adopted to investigate the role of producers, agribusiness and the state in the agricultural policy-making process for each agri-food sector. Two specific periods of conflict were examined, which represented significant attempts to introduce a marketing board as a means to resolve a crisis that was afflicting …

Myosin Transformation In Thyrotoxic Rat Soleus Muscle, Margaret Mary Sopper

Digitized Theses

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with 300{dollar}\mu{dollar}g/kg body weight of Triiodo-L-thyronine (T{dollar}\sb3{dollar}) and L-thyroxine (T{dollar}\sb4{dollar}) on alternate days over a 28-day treatment period. Thyrotoxicosis was confirmed by increased serum T{dollar}\sb3{dollar} levels and a pronounced ventricular hypertrophy (p {dollar}\le{dollar} 0.05 after 5 days). The effects of thyroid hormone on isometric contractile properties of the slow-twitch soleus muscle were studied in situ after 2, 5, 7, 15, 21 or 28 days. Time to peak tension (TPT) and one half relaxation time (1/2 RT) were significantly reduced after 5 days (T-5, p {dollar}\le{dollar} 0.05) and reached 56.7% and 51.1% of age-matched control values …

Physiological, Cognitive, And Behavioural Effects Of Assigned Performance Goals, Ian Robert Gellatly Jan 1991

Physiological, Cognitive, And Behavioural Effects Of Assigned Performance Goals, Ian Robert Gellatly

Digitized Theses

The general purpose of this research was to determine whether changes in physiological arousal could be induced in a goal-setting paradigm, and if so, were these changes associated with the cognitive and behavioural effects of assigned performance goals. Two laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of different goal conditions on physiological (skin resistance level and heart rate) and self-report arousal, cognition (performance expectancy/self-efficacy, performance valence, perceived norm, and personal goal), and task performance. In the first experiment subjects performed a simple perceptual-speed task under one of three goal conditions and one of two feedback conditions. In accordance with …

Differences In "Action Identification" Between Experienced And Novice Counsellors, Brynah Schneider Jan 1991

Differences In "Action Identification" Between Experienced And Novice Counsellors, Brynah Schneider

Digitized Theses

Vallacher and Wegner's (1985; 1987) theory of "Action Identification" was used as a conceptual basis for the empirical examination of possible differences in the understanding of therapeutic actions held by counsellors with different levels of experience. A series of Action Identification Questionnaires was developed and checked for construct validity and test-retest reliability prior to its use in the research reported. In the main study, eighty subjects (20 private practitioners, 32 faculty members, and 28 graduate students) completed the series of Action Identification Questionnaires by rating ten different identifications of seven commonly-employed therapeutic responses. As predicted, factor analyses revealed readily interpretable …

The Effects Of Gastrin Releasing Peptide In Fetal Sheep, Pregnant Sheep And Non Pregnant Sheep, Pamela Elizabeth Houghton Jan 1991

The Effects Of Gastrin Releasing Peptide In Fetal Sheep, Pregnant Sheep And Non Pregnant Sheep, Pamela Elizabeth Houghton

Digitized Theses

These studies examined the hypothesis that GRP stimulates insulin release from the endocrine pancreas of ovine fetuses. This could occur due to the action of GRP directly within the fetal compartment or due to indirect effects of GRP on glucose and insulin concentrations in the maternal compartment which in turn influences the availability of glucose for transplacental transfer to the fetus and hence produce alterations in fetal insulin release.;The studies performed provided the following results: (1) IR-GRP was detectable in nerves of the GI tract and in the systemic circulation but not in the pancreas of fetal and adult sheep; …

Solvent Dependence Of Photoinduced Intramolecular Electron Transfer, Jing-Yao Liu Jan 1991

Solvent Dependence Of Photoinduced Intramolecular Electron Transfer, Jing-Yao Liu

Digitized Theses

This work is a study of the solvent and temperature dependence of photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer (ET). The molecule containing a porphyrin and a quinone linked by a phenylalanine amino acid residue was synthesized. Excitation of this molecule (PPAQ) causes electrons to be transferred from the porphyrin to the quinone entity. The ET rate constants were measured by comparing the porphyrin fluorescence lifetime with or without the possibility of ET.;The ET rate constants of PPAQ were measured for several solvents and compared with data of other similar porphyrin-quinone linked molecules. A temperature dependence of ET rate constants study was also …

Three Essays On Non-Market Resource Allocation Mechanisms, Lijing Zhu Jan 1991

Three Essays On Non-Market Resource Allocation Mechanisms, Lijing Zhu

Digitized Theses

This thesis consists of three essays. In the first essay, I apply the first-price auction theory to investigate equilibrium queuing behavior, rent distribution, and rent dissipation given that the underpriced consumer goods are distributed through queuing and random allocation mechanisms. Four major results are obtained. First, using the generalized first-price auction framework, two existing queuing models in the literature are unified. Second, it is shown that the equilibrium queuing time can be shorter with a secondary market than without. Third, with rationing by queuing as the allocation mechanism, the emergence of secondary markets does not necessarily lead to Pareto improvement: …

Aspects Of Victorian Psychologism, John F. Metcalfe Jan 1991

Aspects Of Victorian Psychologism, John F. Metcalfe

Digitized Theses

In this essay I present revisionary readings of four Victorian philosophers. I argue that each of them is fundamentally committed to a naturalistic philosophical project called psychologism. The psychologistic readings that this critical stance generates offer resources that may be exploited by contemporary philosophers pursuing their own naturalistic projects.;In the first chapter I sketch the structure and main points of the essay. In the second chapter I suggest that Mansel's Kantian psychologism manages to evade the criticisms of Husserl. This serves to highlight the distance between psychologism and contemporary logic. In the third chapter I argue that Whewell embraces a …

Analysis Of Tax Policy Options For Singapore: A General Equilibrium Approach, Ngee Choon Chia Jan 1991

Analysis Of Tax Policy Options For Singapore: A General Equilibrium Approach, Ngee Choon Chia

Digitized Theses

This thesis analyzes tax policy options for Singapore. The first three substantive chapters evaluate the efficiency and distributive impacts of various tax alternatives using a static numerical general equilibrium model. One notable difference of this study from major general equilibrium tax studies for other countries is that instead of using the arithmetic sum of the Compensating and/or Equivalent variations across households, welfare impacts are evaluated using the concept of potential welfare gain/loss, based on Kaldor's (1939) weak compensation principle. The cost of tax distortions is sensitive to the criteria used to evaluate efficiency. To analyze the general equilibrium impacts of …

The Photophysics Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Adsorbed On Silica Gel Surfaces: A Lifetime Distribution Analysis Approach, Yuan-Sheng Liu Jan 1991

The Photophysics Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Adsorbed On Silica Gel Surfaces: A Lifetime Distribution Analysis Approach, Yuan-Sheng Liu

Digitized Theses

The relaxation process of excited molecules, in homogeneous systems, is routinely studied through the measurements of fluorescence lifetimes and fluorescence quantum yields. From these data, the radiative decay rate, and hence the non-radiative decay rate, can be easily derived. Effort has been made, in the present work, to conduct such a fundamental study with molecules adsorbed on silica gel surfaces.;The photophysics of six polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), comprising phenanthrene, chrysene, pyrene, perylene, benzoperylene and coronene, adsorbed on variously dehydroxylated silica gel surfaces, has been investigated in this work. It has been observed that the fluorescence lifetimes of these adsorbed PAHs …

Effects Of Reactive Oxygen Species On The Functional And Electrophysiological Responses Of Cardiac Tissues, Robert Gene Tsushima Jan 1991

Effects Of Reactive Oxygen Species On The Functional And Electrophysiological Responses Of Cardiac Tissues, Robert Gene Tsushima

Digitized Theses

Reactive oxygen species have been implicated in the development of a variety pathological conditions, including myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury. The present study examined the effects of reactive oxygen species on the functional and electrophysiological responses of cardiac tissues.;Purine/xanthine oxidase and hydrogen peroxide (H{dollar}\sb2{dollar}O{dollar}\sb2{dollar}) caused a concentration-dependent decline in contractile force with a concomitant rise in resting tension in isolated guinea pig hearts. These observations indicate that exogenous reactive oxygen species can cause direct myocardial dysfunction in a concentration-dependent manner.;In addition, purine/xanthine oxidase significantly depressed recovery of contractile function, enhanced resting tension and prolonged the duration of reperfusion arrhythmias. In …

Biochemical And Morphological Characterization Of Cytoplasmic Particles From Avian Reticulocytes, Timothy W. Blaker Jan 1991

Biochemical And Morphological Characterization Of Cytoplasmic Particles From Avian Reticulocytes, Timothy W. Blaker

Digitized Theses

Ferritin can be isolated from quail reticulocyte lysates using a rapid two-step purification method that combines heat denaturation and proteinase-K treatments to produce high yields of pure, undegraded ferritin. Ferritin remains in the supernatant of heat-denatured samples, and subsequent treatment with proteinase-K eliminates non-ferritin proteins that remain in the supernatant as well as non-ferritin proteins that are found in association with ferritin.;Ferritin is a heat shock protein of quail reticulocytes. Its synthesis in heat-shocked cells is 3-5 times greater than in control cells. Ferritin subunits synthesized in response to heat shock consist of isoforms that are identical in size and …

Local Government Unionism In Ontario, 1935-1963: A Study Of The Determinants Of Union Growth (Volumes I And Ii), James Robert Mcvittie Jan 1991

Local Government Unionism In Ontario, 1935-1963: A Study Of The Determinants Of Union Growth (Volumes I And Ii), James Robert Mcvittie

Digitized Theses

The thesis examines the proposition that the emergence and growth of local government unionism in Ontario, during the period 1935 to 1963, can be explained in terms of the hypothesized relationships identified in the aggregate union growth literature. Developments in both general municipal employment and the municipal utilities (hydro-electric power, urban transit and water works) are addressed. Specifically, the significance of trends in local government employment, unemployment and labour force composition are explored. This is followed by a detailed examination of local government compensation. The relevance of existing labour relations policy for local government unionism is then assessed. Finally, the …

Digitized Theses

A 45 mL bench-scale internal recycle reactor, named a 'Riser Simulator' was used to study the kinetics of catalytic cracking. This reaction system is well suited for riser cracking reactions since it can be operated at reaction times as low as 3 seconds and can simulate the reaction regime of a riser. The reactor operates in a batch mode with a gas recirculation in the upward direction through the central catalyst zone to maintain a well fluidized bed.;Experimental runs performed in the unit included the cracking of two commercial feedstocks and three mixtures of pure light oil compounds with two …

The Role Of Personality Trait Inference In Performance Appraisal Ratings, Paul Kam Chan Jan 1991

The Role Of Personality Trait Inference In Performance Appraisal Ratings, Paul Kam Chan

Digitized Theses

This dissertation focuses on raters' implicit theories of personality and performance and their influence on performance ratings. The manner in which behavioural exemplars are perceived to be associated make up "implicit theories". Implicit theories or inferential networks are developed by individuals based upon their experiences and are applied towards the interpretation of current experiences.;The first study defines explicitly the network of personality and performance interrelationships perceived by senior personnel managers and senior accountant managers who routinely make performance appraisal ratings. This is achieved via a multidimensional scaling of similarity ratings performed upon 20 personality and 8 performance behaviours. Raters' implicit …

Structure/Function Studies Of Trypanosome Variant Surface Glycoproteins, Vern Bruce Carruthers Jan 1991

Structure/Function Studies Of Trypanosome Variant Surface Glycoproteins, Vern Bruce Carruthers

Digitized Theses

Antigenic variation is manifested by many prominent infectious organisms in adaptive response to host immunity. However, polymorphism in antigenic structure is often limited by the necessity to maintain functionality of the antigen. It follows that it may be possible to design molecularly defined vaccines capable of accounting for variable antigenic phenotype. For this reason, the focus of the present thesis was to develop a model system using trypanosome variant surface glycoprotein (VSG) for examining the effects of amino acid sequence variation on the specificity of antigenic determinants.;In order to assess the suitability for a model system of four VSGs (isoVAT …

Growth Temperature Effects On Photosynthesis And Photoinhibition Of Spinach (Spinacia Oleracea L), Steven Ray Boese Jan 1991

Growth Temperature Effects On Photosynthesis And Photoinhibition Of Spinach (Spinacia Oleracea L), Steven Ray Boese

Digitized Theses

Spinacea oleracea L. cv Savoy was utilized to determine the effects of growth temperature and temperature shifts after leaf expansion on growth, photosynthesis and photoinhibition.;Growth was slowed at 5{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C with the second leaves reaching full expansion at 92 days after planting compared to 32 days for 16{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C grown plants. Growth at 5{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C compared to 16{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C resulted in a 2 to 3 fold increases in leaf area, dry weight per area, and leaf thickness of fully expanded leaves. Further, growth at 5{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C resulted in an increase from 2 to 3 palisade layers and an increase in the freezing tolerance from {dollar}-2\sp\circ{dollar}C …

Psychological Well-Being: Personality And Social Role Perspectives, Kathryn Ann Dance Jan 1991

Psychological Well-Being: Personality And Social Role Perspectives, Kathryn Ann Dance

Digitized Theses

This thesis was concerned with an examination of psychological well-being, defined as consisting of negative affect, positive affect, and self-esteem. Two distinct approaches to well-being were identified (i.e. personality and social role). It was argued that well-being is likely determined by both personality and social role influences, and that these two areas might themselves be interrelated. Both cognitive and affective personality factors were included in this research (i.e. dysfunctional cognitions and affect intensity). Roles were examined at a general level (number of roles and their cognitive representation in terms of complexity) and at a specific level that included assessments of …
