Diffusion Independent, Bimolecular, Photoinduced Electron Transfer Reactions, Joyce Elizabeth Stilborn Jan 1989

Diffusion Independent, Bimolecular, Photoinduced Electron Transfer Reactions, Joyce Elizabeth Stilborn

Digitized Theses

A variety of expressions have been developed which relate the Gibbs energy of activation to the net Gibbs energy change of a reaction. One of these, the Marcus relation, was developed specifically for outersphere electron transfer reactions. It predicted that, as the reaction exergonicity increased, the activation energy would decrease to zero and then increase. Consequently, the reaction rate constant should increase to a maximum and then decrease in the so-called inverted region.;Extensive investigation over many years failed to find evidence for the inverted region. Recently, five types of experiments have yielded clear evidence of inverted behavior. In all five …

Johann Kuhnau's Hermeneutics: Rhetorical Theory And Musical Exegesis In His Works, Lora L. Matthews Jan 1989

Johann Kuhnau's Hermeneutics: Rhetorical Theory And Musical Exegesis In His Works, Lora L. Matthews

Digitized Theses

The theological changes of the Reformation were paralleled by an increasing reliance on the literal meaning of Scripture and an examination of passages in authentic languages in order to find the full resonance of each word to achieve the greatest possible emphasis; this emphasology was the principal function of the interpretation, founded on a pluralistic meaning of the text. Lutheran hermeneutes developed a common method of interpretation and format of presentation. The hermeneutical treatises written by German authors in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries have been virtually ignored by scholars of all disciplines, partly because they did not …

Scaffoldings For Policy Theories: Context Sensitive Rationality, David Naor Jan 1989

Scaffoldings For Policy Theories: Context Sensitive Rationality, David Naor

Digitized Theses

Which rationality concept is adequate for policy theories? A Received View Rationality (RVR) concept is found in decision and policy theories. RVR is instrumental, formal and analytic (decomposing). The thesis that ideal RVR is adequate for policy theories can be defended either because RVR is context free rationality (CFR) and hence universally applicable, or because it is especially adequate for policy theories. The first defense is rejected as a corollary of an Arrovian Meta-Theoretic Impossibility Theorem (AMTIT). AMTIT claims that a context-free choice theory adequate for finite multi-dimensional choice structures is impossible. If at all, rationality can be theorized by …

The Role Of Attitudes And Beliefs In Personal Computer Utilization, Ronald Lawrence Thompson Jan 1989

The Role Of Attitudes And Beliefs In Personal Computer Utilization, Ronald Lawrence Thompson

Digitized Theses

A two-phased study investigating the role of attitudes and beliefs in the use of personal computers was conducted in 9 organizations. During the first phase a questionnaire was administered to 278 knowledge workers within one organization. The measurement scale items were tested and revised slightly, and the research model tested also. In the second phase, the revised questionnaire was administered to 364 knowledge workers (80% gross response rate) in 8 diverse organizations. The measures and research model were tested using Partial Least Squares. Nine of eleven hypothesized relations were supported statistically, and 38% of the variance was explained in the …

Factors Associated With Root Caries Initiation, David William Banting Jan 1989

Factors Associated With Root Caries Initiation, David William Banting

Digitized Theses

Forty institutionalized adults, considered to be at high risk of root caries, were followed for a two year period. They were grouped according to whether the microorganisms under study (Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, Actinomyces viscosus, Actinomyces naeslundii and Lactobacillus) were present at baseline on one or more noncarious root surfaces with gingival recession and the incidence of root caries was then recorded. The null hypothesis was that the presence of these microorganisms is not associated with the occurrence of root caries. The effect of other variables shown to be associated with root caries, such as age, sex, number of teeth, …

Generation Of Oxygen-Derived Free Radicals Stimulated By The Fumigant Insecticide Phosphine: In Vivo And In Vitro Studies, Caroline Jane Bolter Jan 1989

Generation Of Oxygen-Derived Free Radicals Stimulated By The Fumigant Insecticide Phosphine: In Vivo And In Vitro Studies, Caroline Jane Bolter

Digitized Theses

Previous studies have shown that phosphine (PH{dollar}\sb3{dollar}) inhibits cytochrome oxidase and that a direct relationship exists between oxygen concentration during fumigation and insect mortality. This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that mortality is due to cumulative damage of cellular components by free radicals derived from superoxide (O{dollar}\sb2\sp\div){dollar} generated by the inhibited respiratory chain.;Hydrogen peroxide {dollar}\rm(H\sb2O\sb2),{dollar} a product a O{dollar}\sb2\sp\div{dollar} dismutation, was measured spectrophotometrically using yeast cyctochrome c peroxidase as an indicator. The respiratory inhibitors; PH{dollar}\sb3{dollar}, antimycin and myxothiazol stimulated the release of {dollar}\rm H\sb2O\sb2{dollar} from mitochondria isolated from granary weevils (Sitophilus granarius). Peroxide release increased with the addition …

Studies On Adenosine-Mediated Neuromodulation In The Enteric Nervous System, Fedias Leontiou Christofi Jan 1989

Studies On Adenosine-Mediated Neuromodulation In The Enteric Nervous System, Fedias Leontiou Christofi

Digitized Theses

Although the role of adenosine in the inhibition of acetylcholine release from myenteric neurons of the small intestine is firmly established, the classification and characteristics of such receptors have not been adequately described. Unlike in the central nervous system, it is not clear if heterogeneity of adenosine receptors exists, or if nucleoside-mediated inhibition of the release of other neuromediators occurs in the enteric nervous system. The studies reported in this thesis were directed at these questions.;Adenosine recognition sites were characterized in ligand binding studies at purified myenteric varicosities. The receptor nature of the binding sites labelled by selective adenosine analogs …

Regeneration And Politics: Buber's Idea Of Nationhood, Janet Catherine Menard Jan 1989

Regeneration And Politics: Buber's Idea Of Nationhood, Janet Catherine Menard

Digitized Theses

The dissertation explores Martin Buber's conception of Jewish nationhood, in particular his idea of "regeneration", which, applied to Israel, involves as much divine and universal dimensions as it involves secular and particular dimensions, such as the biblical idea of cosmic mission and chosen nationhood, on the one hand, and return to labour on the land and the formation of communal socialism, on the other. Chapters I-VII discuss this attempted synthesis. In addition, they touch upon Buber's views on national development and autonomy within the context of international relations and the reality of Palestine--a reality distinguished by the presence of an …

Communication In Marital Dyads: Implications For Interactional Approaches To Depression, Debra Lynn Kowalik Jan 1989

Communication In Marital Dyads: Implications For Interactional Approaches To Depression, Debra Lynn Kowalik

Digitized Theses

The present investigation examined the nature of the relationships among marital interaction, marital distress and depression. Forty-six couples served as subjects, comprising the following five groups: ten maritally distressed, depressed psychiatric out-patients and their spouses, seven maritally distressed and seven maritally nondistressed, nondepressed psychiatric out-patients and their spouses, and 22 nondepressed, nonpsychiatric couples from the community, ten of whom were maritally distressed and twelve maritally nondistressed. The behavior of both spouses was assessed, using both self-report and behavioral measures of marital communication, gathered from multiple perspectives (self, spouse, observer). Measures were taken once early in treatment and again, two months …

Receptor Arrangement In Myoblasts And Model Membranes, Ingrid Evelyn Mehlhorn Jan 1989

Receptor Arrangement In Myoblasts And Model Membranes, Ingrid Evelyn Mehlhorn

Digitized Theses

Glycosphingolipids are the carbohydrate-bearing lipids of animal cell surfaces. They are being investigated for their structural effects, for their role as recognition sites for hormones, toxins, viruses, and for their involvement in cell-cell interactions. Their physical behaviour in membranes--i.e., their exposure, distribution, peculiar acyl chain characteristics, sugar headgroup arrangement, and interactions--have become questions of considerable debate since these are the very factors thought to regulate their roles as structural components and attachment/recognition sites.;A major interest for us has been to apply freeze-etch electron microscopy to receptor studies in membranes. We developed its use for glycoproteins in cultured cell membranes and …

Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry And Its Application To Studies In Geochemistry, Ian Joseph Muir Jan 1989

Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry And Its Application To Studies In Geochemistry, Ian Joseph Muir

Digitized Theses

Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) with specimen isolation conditions (an extreme form of energy filtering) is useful in geochemical studies. The presence of molecular ion interferences in SIMS spectra is greatly reduced when analyzing high energy secondary ions (i.e. specimen isolation conditions), thus simplifying the interpretation of mass spectra.;High energy secondary ions were found to be less susceptible to the dramatic changes in ionization yield resulting from the effect of the matrix in secondary ion production. Correlation of ion intensities for glass and crystalline materials of identical composition is possible for most elements when using some form of energy filtering, …

A Lower Devonian Reef Sequence And Fauna, Disappointment Bay Formation, Canadian Arctic Islands, Eric Charles Prosh Jan 1989

A Lower Devonian Reef Sequence And Fauna, Disappointment Bay Formation, Canadian Arctic Islands, Eric Charles Prosh

Digitized Theses

The Disappointment Bay Formation (Emsian) on Lowther Island, N.W.T., consists of an 85-90 m thick sequence of upwards-shoaling limestones and dolomites. Within the upper two-thirds of the formation, exhumed reef mounds, about 50 m thick, are exposed. Four principal, vertically-successive reef facies can be distinguished; a basal stromatactis mudstone-wackestone; an algally-bound wackestone; a stromatoporoid-coral framestone; a capping crinoidal grainstone. Reef growth occurred in response to passive sedimentary shoaling under static sealevel conditions, the reefs nucleating upon small mounds of aggregated brachiopods. Following stromatactis-mudstone deposition, a thick sequence of dominantly algally-bound wackestone accumulated on the reefs; ubiquitous, horizontally-disposed, large fibrous calcite …

The Morphology And Contractile Function Of Skeletal Muscle In Aged Humans, Charles Leslie Rice Jan 1989

The Morphology And Contractile Function Of Skeletal Muscle In Aged Humans, Charles Leslie Rice

Digitized Theses

Muscle strength and morphology were investigated in four studies in elderly men and women between the ages of 62 and 102 years. The purposes were to: (1) measure the voluntary strength in several limb muscle groups from an 'older' elderly population, (2) measure and compare the amount of muscle and non-muscle tissue (NMT) in the arms and legs of older (65 + years of age) and younger (25 to 38 years of age) males using computed tomography (CT) scans, (3) compare the CT results with measures of anthropometry in the same two groups of males, and (4) measure the electrically …

Precision Measurement Of The 1s2s(1)S(0)-1s2p(1)P(1) Interval In Heliumlike Beryllium, Timothy James Scholl Jan 1989

Precision Measurement Of The 1s2s(1)S(0)-1s2p(1)P(1) Interval In Heliumlike Beryllium, Timothy James Scholl

Digitized Theses

This work represents the first test of non-relativistic, relativistic, and quantum electrodynamic calculations for two-electron systems using a high precision measurement of the 2{dollar}\sp1{dollar}S-2{dollar}\sp1{dollar}P interval of a heliumlike ion. The method of laser resonance spectroscopy on a fast ion beam of ions was used to measure the 1s2s{dollar}\sp1{dollar}S{dollar}\sb0{dollar}-1s2p{dollar}\sp1{dollar}P{dollar}\sb1{dollar} interval of heliumlike beryllium to be 16276.774(9) cm{dollar}\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}{dollar}. Absolute frequency calibration was provided by the iodine atlas of Gerstenkorn and Luc. This result is in excellent agreement with both theory and previous experiment with an improvement in experimental precision by a factor of 11.;The measurement of the width of the observed laser …

Procedures Affecting The Development, Maintenance And Loss Of Tolerance To Amphetamine-Anorexia And Their Effects On Haloperidol-Catalepsy, Angela Mary Streather Jan 1989

Procedures Affecting The Development, Maintenance And Loss Of Tolerance To Amphetamine-Anorexia And Their Effects On Haloperidol-Catalepsy, Angela Mary Streather

Digitized Theses

In Experiment 1 the effect of food-deprivation on the development of tolerance to amphetamine-anorexia was examined. It was demonstrated that both food-deprivation and access to food contingent on amphetamine administration were necessary for tolerance to develop.;It has been suggested that stimulant-induced anorexia is partially caused by concurrent drug-induced motor behaviour which is incompatible with eating or drinking. This implies that tolerance to amphetamine-anorexia should be accompanied by some tolerance to amphetamine-induced motor activity. The results of Experiment 2 demonstrated that tolerance to amphetamine-induced stereotypy develops at the same time as tolerance to amphetamine-induced anorexia. Furthermore, it was found that animals …

Geochemical Constraints On The Future Of Agriculture In Sri Lanka, (Weerasuriya) Tara Tampoe Jan 1989

Geochemical Constraints On The Future Of Agriculture In Sri Lanka, (Weerasuriya) Tara Tampoe

Digitized Theses

The economic mainstay of tropical Sri Lanka, is agriculture. Plantation monocultures earn 43% of export trade. Under natural conditions, tropical rainfall leads to a paradoxical combination of lush vegetation and infertile soils; regeneration is maintained through rapid recycling of litter. In monocultures nutrient removal is not similarly compensated for, as the increasing number of deficient nutrient element diagnoses indicate.;Distinct differences exist between Sri Lanka's intensely cultivated Wet Zone soils and Dry Zone soils.;While Sri Lankan soils are reassuringly fertile compared to Amazon soils, average crustal levels of Na, Mg and Ca obtain in only {dollar}\sim{dollar}10% of Wet Zone soils sampled …

Intermediate-Level Visual Processing And The Perception Of Inside/Outside Spatial Relations, Richard David Wright Jan 1989

Intermediate-Level Visual Processing And The Perception Of Inside/Outside Spatial Relations, Richard David Wright

Digitized Theses

The visual perception of inside/outside spatial relations often appears to be immediate and effortless. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the processes underlying this perception are numerous and complex. According to Ullmann, these processes can be characterized as sequences of basic operations called visual routines. Each routine consists of different combinations of operations which allow the visual system to establish object shapes and to extract spatial relations between objects. The research described in this thesis involved manipulations of display parameters for tasks in which observers made judgements about whether a target was inside or outside of a bounding figure. …

Steady Asymmetric Flow Of A Viscous Fluid Past A Cylinder, Peter Joseph Young Jan 1989

Steady Asymmetric Flow Of A Viscous Fluid Past A Cylinder, Peter Joseph Young

Digitized Theses

The steady flow of a viscous incompressible fluid past a cylinder is considered. In particular, asymmetric flows, which involve a lift force in addition to the drag, are investigated. The Navier-Stokes equations and the equation of continuity are formulated in terms of the stream function and vorticity. The work may be divided into two parts, an asymptotic solution of the governing equations of motion at far distances from the cylinder, and a numerical solution of these equations near the cylinder. An asymptotic solution to the vorticity is obtained in the form of a Hermite polynomial expansion. This solution is in …

Studies In Asymmetric Catalysis, Fan-Chou Xu Jan 1989

Studies In Asymmetric Catalysis, Fan-Chou Xu

Digitized Theses

The homogeneous, asymmetric hydrosilylation of prochiral ketones using chiral Rh catalysts of the amphos, P-N, and diamphos, P-N-N, chelate ligands was studied in both solution and the solid state using X-ray crystallographic and spectroscopic techniques, including {dollar}\sp1{dollar}H and {dollar}\sp{lcub}31{rcub}{dollar}P NMR, Visible, Infra Red, and Mass Spectroscopy. These studies provided a basis for relating the catalyst shape to the optical yield, and allowed the elucidation of a mechanistic scheme for homogeneous asymmetric hydrosilylation. In a certain favourable case, an oxidative addition produce RhHCl(SiCl{dollar}\sb3{dollar})(PPh{dollar}\sb3)\sb2{dollar} was isolated and characterized by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study.;In tests for the hydrosilylation of prochiral ketones …

Comparative Study Of The Isozymes Of The Cationic And The Anionic Peanut Peroxidases, Chunfang Hu Jan 1989

Comparative Study Of The Isozymes Of The Cationic And The Anionic Peanut Peroxidases, Chunfang Hu

Digitized Theses

Peroxidase isozymes are distributed throughout the plant kingdom. In order to understand the functions of the isoperoxidases, the nature and degree of the heterogeneity between them need to be clarified. The cationic (C.PRX) and the anionic peanut peroxidases (A.PRX) are used for such a study.;The physico-chemical properties of the two peroxidases are reported. They are similar in MW, carbohydrate content and pH optimum for catalysis, but differ in Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} contents and isoelectric point. The basis for the difference in pI is found in the different relative content of the acidic and basic amino acids, with more acidic residues present in …

The Skeptical Paradox And Positive Epistemological Theory, Patrick Thomas Flynn Jan 1989

The Skeptical Paradox And Positive Epistemological Theory, Patrick Thomas Flynn

Digitized Theses

Philosophers throughout the ages have had a great deal to say about philosophical skepticism, but have generally spent very little time clarifying what exactly they mean by it. Nor have they given much attention to the basic origin and structure of this problem, of which they so frequently and glibly speak. In this thesis I argue that the problem of skepticism can be best understood as a family of reflective, deductive paradoxes centering around the apparent deductive closure of the concept of knowledge. That is, I argue that there are apparently reasonable assumptions which we make regarding the knowledge predicate, …

Consumption And Asset Returns In Artificial Economies, Richard Tiffany Macklem Jan 1989

Consumption And Asset Returns In Artificial Economies, Richard Tiffany Macklem

Digitized Theses

This study examines the ability of dynamic, stochastic equilibrium models of consumer behavior to simultaneously mimic the salient features of U.S. consumption and asset return data.;Part one of the investigation focuses on the interaction between consumption choices for durable and non-durable goods, the real interest rate, and the rate of return on equity. A dynamic, stochastic, two-good general equilibrium model of consumer behaviour is constructed, and equity and a risk-free asset are priced in this economy. A discrete state space version of the model is then calibrated to U.S. data and solved numerically. Examination of the model's statistical properties are …

Dynamic Stochastic Analysis Of A Small Open Economy, Estrada Enrique Mendoza Jan 1989

Dynamic Stochastic Analysis Of A Small Open Economy, Estrada Enrique Mendoza

Digitized Theses

This thesis consists of four essays that study the dynamic stochastic behavior of a small open economy. In the framework studied here, rational individuals formulate optimal intertemporal plans in an environment where domestic capital and foreign financial assets are used as alternative vehicles of savings, and where random disturbances affect the production technology or the international terms of trade. As demonstrated in the papers, the separation of savings and investment decisions that characterizes the individual's optimal plans in open economies has important implications for the evolution of macroeconomic aggregates.;The main contribution of this work is that it undertakes a quantitative …

Three Essays On The Acquisition Of Information, Jacques Robert Jan 1989

Three Essays On The Acquisition Of Information, Jacques Robert

Digitized Theses

This thesis consists of three essays related to the problem of acquisition of information by economic agents.;The first essay, entitled "Bundled Insurance", considers the problem of screening good-and bad-risk individuals in an insurance market. Insurance markets under adverse selection are known to generate incomplete risk sharing. This essay shows that it is optimal, in the context of reactive equilibria, for a monopolist in some unrelated market to bundle its product with a compulsory insurance policy. This essay may help us to understand why employers often provide compulsory group insurance.;The purpose of the second essay, entitled "Search and Price Advertising", is …

Some Aspects Of Browning's Satire: Browning, Donne, And Mandeville, Barbara Ruth Ryerse Jan 1989

Some Aspects Of Browning's Satire: Browning, Donne, And Mandeville, Barbara Ruth Ryerse

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this study is to show that some aspects of Browning's satire clarify his use of tradition by indicating his readiness to appropriate and adapt satiric forms of ancient origin to his own poetic purposes. A main focus on religious, aesthetic, and satiric elements in Christmas-Eve and Easter-Day leads to a comparison of this poem with the Satyres of John Donne that were written in the tradition of formal verse satire. Similarly, the later poem With Bernard de Mandeville is compared to Mandeville's The Fable of the Bees and the tradition of Menippean satire. These comparisons reveal common …

Los And The Science Of The Elohim, John Michael Smith Jan 1989

Los And The Science Of The Elohim, John Michael Smith

Digitized Theses

This study re-examines what have been commonplace propositions for Blake criticism: that Los is Blake's chief symbol for the activity of imagination in the prophecies; that the theme of Los's labours, his attempt in Golgonooza to practise "the Science of the Elohim," serves as a focus for Blake's critique of, and alternative to, the science of "Bacon, Newton and Locke"; and that Blake's opposition to the latter stems from his rejection of its "Cartesian" foundation, its dualism of mind and body, subjective and objective realms. This study begins by attempting to show that, while we have agreed to place Los …

The chosen environment for this research was the involvement of purchasing in the acquisition of equipment within a research and development function. The research involved new scale development, administration of questionnaires and field interviews with scientists, purchasers and managers in twenty seven research centres in Canada and the United States. Case vignettes are presented to enrich the understanding of the acquisition process.;Examples of both low and high purchasing involvement were found. In low involvement …

Coordination Chemistry Of A Coordinatively Unsaturated Trinuclear Platinum Cluster, Arleen Marie Bradford Jan 1989

Coordination Chemistry Of A Coordinatively Unsaturated Trinuclear Platinum Cluster, Arleen Marie Bradford

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the reactivity of the coordinatively unsaturated triplatinum cluster (Pt{dollar}\sb3(\mu\sb3{dollar}-CO){dollar}(\mu{dollar}-dppm){dollar}\sb3\rbrack{dollar} (PF{dollar}\sb6\rbrack \sb2{dollar}, 1. The complex can act as a model for a triangle of platinum atoms on a Pt(111) surface and this thesis describes studies of its reactivity towards various main group reagents.;The halide ions, Cl{dollar}\sp-{dollar}, Br{dollar}\sp-{dollar} and I{dollar}\sp-{dollar}, yielded the clusters (Pt{dollar}\rm\sb3(\mu\sb3{dollar}-CO){dollar}(\mu\sb3{dollar}-X)({dollar}\mu{dollar}-dppm){dollar}\sb3\rbrack \sp{lcub}1+{rcub}{dollar} which were characterized spectroscopically. Attempts were made to investigate the bonding in these systems with respect to the degree of ionic, or covalent, character in the Pt{dollar}\rm\sb3(\mu\sb3{dollar}-X) bonds through ligand exchange studies.;Monodentate tertiary phosphines and phosphites yielded the clusters (Pt{dollar}\rm\sb3(\mu{dollar}-CO)L{dollar}(\mu{dollar}-dppm){dollar}\sb3\rbrack\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar}, L = phosphine or …

The Effects Of Waste Leachates On The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Natural Clays (Volumes I And Ii), Federico Fernandez Jan 1989

The Effects Of Waste Leachates On The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Natural Clays (Volumes I And Ii), Federico Fernandez

Digitized Theses

Sanitary landfilling remains a viable alternative for disposal of the ever increasing volumes of municipal solid waste. Current landfill design practice requires the presence of a clay barrier (liner) that may consist of either a natural stratum or compacted clay borrow. The liner acts as a hydraulic barrier to control the flux of contaminants from the waste into the adjacent groundwater. In order to do this clay liners are required to have low hydraulic conductivity, k (typically 10{dollar}\sp{lcub}-8{rcub}{dollar} cm/s) that shall not increase during exposure to waste leachate.;This thesis reports the assessment of compatibility between natural clays from Sarnia, Ontario, …

The Coordination Chemistry Of Hexafluoroacetone Hydrate, Rosemary Catherine Hynes Jan 1989

The Coordination Chemistry Of Hexafluoroacetone Hydrate, Rosemary Catherine Hynes

Digitized Theses

This thesis discusses the coordination chemistry of the fluorinated gem-diol, (CF{dollar}\sb3)\sb2{dollar}C(OH){dollar}\sb2{dollar}, "hexafluoroacetone hydrate" (HFAH). Due to the electron-withdrawing ability of the CF{dollar}\sb3{dollar} groups, the protons of this diol are acidic. Reactions of the diol with metal chlorides and alkali metal hydroxides were found to give fluorinated alkoxide complexes in which HFAH adopted four distinct coordination modes. The nature of the metal, and the amount and steric requirements of the coligand, if any, used, were identified as major factors in determining which coordination mode was adopted. The four observed modes are (i) as a chelating dialkoxide, {dollar}\rm\sp-OC(CF\sb3)\sb2O\sp-{dollar}, (ii) as a dimerized, …
