Assessing Perfectionism As A Predictor Of Exercise Dependency Over Time., Sarah E. Ernst
Assessing Perfectionism As A Predictor Of Exercise Dependency Over Time., Sarah E. Ernst
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Exercise is generally thought to be beneficial for physical and mental health; however, when done in excess, exercise can lead to damaging physical, psychological, and social health consequences. This type of exercise is known as exercise dependency and is frequently associated with eating disorder pathology. Perfectionism (high standards and evaluative concerns) is a risk factor for eating disorders and is also associated with exercise dependency. However, no studies have examined longitudinal relationships between perfectionism and exercise dependency. The current study used a sample of adolescent females (N = 444) from a Southeastern United States high school, and participants completed …
Women And Fiber: The Role Of Craft Traditions In The Transmission Of Cultural History., Brooks Vessels
Women And Fiber: The Role Of Craft Traditions In The Transmission Of Cultural History., Brooks Vessels
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
This thesis investigates the role of fiber and historic craft processes in the documentation and transmission of women’s history. It has inspired an original body of artwork that employs such traditional techniques as weaving, quilting, sewing, and dyeing in addition to the contemporary processes of performance art, installation, and video documentation as a means of connecting with a matrilineal line. The research conducted provides examples of women who have used fiber processes as a way to process grief, enact religious rituals, and perform domestic tasks, as well as contemporary artists and art historians who have considered the role of fiber …
An Uncertain Line: Making Art About Photographs Of American War And Violence., Cassidy Meurer
An Uncertain Line: Making Art About Photographs Of American War And Violence., Cassidy Meurer
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Photography’s power in capturing a moment in history is indisputable, but inevitably flawed. Assumptions of objectivity and truth are made that do not count for the bias of the photographer, or the bias of the viewer. These assumptions do not explain the warped effect of freezing life at a fraction of a second. Information is left outside the frame; stories are fragmented in their retelling. Certain historical photographs have become iconic over time. My interest lies in images of American battle, violence, and trauma; those that have political and propagandic weight. Coded, controversial, and inherently emotional, these photographs have become …
Anxiety Symptoms As A Predictor Of Head And Neck Cancer Survival And Potential For Mediation By Cancer Treatment Response., Tyler D. Pollitt
Anxiety Symptoms As A Predictor Of Head And Neck Cancer Survival And Potential For Mediation By Cancer Treatment Response., Tyler D. Pollitt
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
BACKGROUND:
Head and neck cancers (HNC) are associated with high rates of depression, which seems to affect overall survival. However, little attention has been paid to the effects of anxiety on overall survival, though anxiety has been shown to activate inflammatory pathways implicated in cancer symptom development and progression. Here it was hypothesized that higher pre-treatment anxiety levels in HNC patients would predict poorer overall two-year survival and a higher likelihood of subsequent HNC treatment failure. Additionally, we expected that the relationship between higher pre-treatment anxiety and poorer two-year overall survival would be mediated by treatment failure.
METHODS:
Patients (n …
Reporting Poverty In Louisville : News Coverage Of Slum Clearance, La Salle Place, And College Court, 1934-1938., Shelby N Carter
Reporting Poverty In Louisville : News Coverage Of Slum Clearance, La Salle Place, And College Court, 1934-1938., Shelby N Carter
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
This project examines poverty in news by analyzing reports on Louisville slum clearance, La Salle Place, and College Court public housing projects from November 1934 through February 1938 in the Courier-Journal, Louisville Herald-Post, and Louisville Leader newspapers. In contrast to current academic research, reports on issues related to poverty appeared regularly, portrayed the poor as deserving, and avoided intersecting poverty with issues of race or gender. However, in support of current academic research, coverage of poverty in Louisville neglected to discuss perpetual poverty and relied on elite sources for information. In the event of economic distress and federal intervention like …
Playing Games To Improve Conceptual Understanding And Cooperation In Social Dilemmas., Jason R Bush
Playing Games To Improve Conceptual Understanding And Cooperation In Social Dilemmas., Jason R Bush
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
People make decisions every day that have significant impact on others. The current experiment investigates the learning and decision-making processes involved when small groups confront a complex social dilemma under different learning conditions designed to imitate common educational interventions used in classrooms and non-laboratory settings. Participants (N=96) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions. In the Explore-First condition (n=32), participants played one round of a simulated social dilemma board game before receiving a lesson on social dilemmas, then played a second round. In the Lesson-First condition (n=32), participants received the lesson before playing …
The Role Of Antecedent-Focused Emotion Regulatory Strategies On Emotionally Dysregulated Behavior Above And Beyond The Influence Of Adhd., Skyler C. Vanmeter
The Role Of Antecedent-Focused Emotion Regulatory Strategies On Emotionally Dysregulated Behavior Above And Beyond The Influence Of Adhd., Skyler C. Vanmeter
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Emotion dysregulation in children may contribute to poor interpersonal relationships and a variety of internalizing and externalizing psychopathological outcomes in children both with and without ADHD. This study serves to provide an examination of how emotional self-awareness and situationally appropriate emotional expression may affect an individual's ability to broadly regulate emotion and additionally provides an exploratory investigation of how these attributes may affect specific emotion regulation. The present study found that emotional self-awareness and emotion recognition may both contribute to emotion regulation through shared variance with each other rather than unique variance of either one. Exploratory analyses of regulation of …
H.E.L.P : A Creative Exercise In Feminism And The Buddy Comedy., Bayne M. Lutz
H.E.L.P : A Creative Exercise In Feminism And The Buddy Comedy., Bayne M. Lutz
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
This screenplay attempts to reconcile the author's confusion on how to best enact social progress by examining and satirizing several competing feminist movements. Set in an off-kilter Los Angeles, the comedy tracks Alivia, a recent PhD grad who cannot leverage her education toward finding a job. In desperation, she joins a radical organization called the H.E.L.P. (Heroines for the Elimination of Loathsome Professors), which encourages her to take matters into her own hands.
Inverting tropes from buddy comedies, cop-shows, ghost stories, and Bond movies, the screenplay grapples with how women are meant to break the glass ceiling and it may …
A Bug Eat Bug World : Does Urbanization Decrease Survivorship Of Pollinators., Amy L. Cherry
A Bug Eat Bug World : Does Urbanization Decrease Survivorship Of Pollinators., Amy L. Cherry
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Human impact on the environment is responsible for the sixth mass extinction on Earth as well as rapid population declines in many taxa. Land use change, via increasing urbanization and intensity of agricultural practices, is the most important aspect of human impact on the environment, and it is associated with population decline and extinction in several taxa, but especially in pollinator species. Pollinators, which are essential for crop production, are experiencing declines as a result of the loss of habitat and host plants associated with urbanization. Urbanization negatively affects pollinators, but in the wake of lost naturalized habitat, some researchers …
The Delphic Plague : A Study In Athenian Oracular Rejection As Evident In The Oedipus Tyrannus., Devin A Stephens
The Delphic Plague : A Study In Athenian Oracular Rejection As Evident In The Oedipus Tyrannus., Devin A Stephens
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of this work is to determine the effects of the Plague of Athens on the socio-cultural and religious climate of Athens as revealed through Sophocles’ magnum opus the Oedipus Tyrannus. The focus is the problem of oracular decay as viewed by Sophocles due to the political discrepancies between Athens and Delphi of which the plague was the final catalyst. Sophocles in this work is then explored as a writer with sentiments of Delphic Apologism in the wake of the plague which acted as a catalyst for a near complete dissolution of religious customs and furthermore a negation of …

Investigation Of The In Vitro Interactions Between Two Common Cystic Fibrosis Pathogens, Staphylococcus Aureus And Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia., Matthew Hill
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common autosomal disorders in Caucasian populations. This disorder creates a very opportune environment for many pathogens within the patient’s lung. Two common pathogens that infect CF patient’s lungs are Staphylococcus aureusand Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. These two species of bacteria can colonize host environments and establish mats of cells known as biofilms that become very difficult to eradicate with antibiotics. Once inside a CF lung, these pathogens must not only evade the host immune response but they also interact and compete with each other; however, how bacterial pathogens interact inside the host lung …
Looking Through The Grille : An Analysis Of Ursuline Religious Agency In An Early French Colonial Context., Molly If Laporte
Looking Through The Grille : An Analysis Of Ursuline Religious Agency In An Early French Colonial Context., Molly If Laporte
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
This thesis focuses on the agency of the Ursulines in French New Orleans from 1727 to 1732. It analyzes the letters of Marie Hachard and several other documents from the Ursuline archives and places them within the context of French colonial New Orleans. The Ursulines’ establishment in Louisiana and their missionary efforts were situated in a larger colonial context of violent conflict between the French and the native populations, the colonists’ endless struggles to develop an economy and secure funds to survive, and the slow evolution of official systems of power. The Ursulines’ decisions to leave their homes for the …

Morphometric Analysis And Application In Galaxy Evolution And High-Redshift Surveys., Samir Kusmic
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
In this thesis, I will present my research work with statistical analysis towards a galaxy’s morphology and its morphometric. The first part would be with the galaxy morphometric and have heavy focus with one particular software: Source Extractor. Source Extractor was compared to GALFIT in order to see how accurate and precise we would expect the software to be with effective radii, scale length, inclination, position angle, and major and minor axes. This is towards preparation for future surveys with expectation of a large boom in galaxy discovery with the new observatories to be online (EUCLID, LSST, JWST, etc.). From our …
Long-Term Patterns In Remotely-Sensed Vegetation Productivity For A Transboundary Conservation Area In Southern Africa., Liam Resener
Long-Term Patterns In Remotely-Sensed Vegetation Productivity For A Transboundary Conservation Area In Southern Africa., Liam Resener
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
In the past century, researchers have observed changes in vegetation productivity and structure in savannas across the world. These changes, caused by shifts in precipitation patterns, fire patterns, soil nutrients, herbivory, and land management decisions, are important to understand because they affect availability of natural resources, which in turn affects the livelihoods of local populations. This study centers on the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), a transboundary conservation area that spans five countries in Southern Africa comprised of large areas of protected land. Using the Normalized-Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), I tested a 35-year remotely-sensed time series for intra- and inter-annual …
The Role Of Ppal In The Moss Physcomitrella Patens., Noela M. Botaka
The Role Of Ppal In The Moss Physcomitrella Patens., Noela M. Botaka
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Protein prenylation is a post-translational modification that involves the addition of lipid groups to the carboxy end of a target protein and is necessary for protein activity. Prenylation has important roles in the cell: targeting and localizing proteins to subcellular compartments and promoting protein-protein interactions. As a highly conserved process in eukaryotes, prenylation is especially important for plant development. In contrast to other eukaryotes, in which loss of prenylation components can be lethal, in the flowering plant Arabidopsis thaliana and the moss Physcomitrella patens, most are viable. Prior studies have shown that prenylation is involved in ABA hormone responses, …
Pparγ And High Molecular Weight Adiponectin In White Adipose Tissue In An Obesity Model., Katelyn M. Mcdowell
Pparγ And High Molecular Weight Adiponectin In White Adipose Tissue In An Obesity Model., Katelyn M. Mcdowell
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Adiponectin is a protein secreted from adipose (fat) tissue. It is secreted into the blood as either a trimer (low molecular weight), hexamer (middle molecular weight) or an 18-mer (high molecular weight). Adiponectin, particularly the high molecular weight (HMW) isoform, has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity, which is important for maintaining healthy blood glucose levels. Adiponectin levels have been shown to be decreased in individuals who are obese, and this may play a role in the diabetes which often accompanies obesity. PPARγ is a protein that is highly expressed in white adipose tissue and is responsible for regulating portions …
Indole Sensitivity In Various Insect Herbivores., Rakhi Patel
Indole Sensitivity In Various Insect Herbivores., Rakhi Patel
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
When plants in nature are attacked by herbivores, they frequently release airborne volatiles. These herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) help plants defend themselves against herbivore attack by calling in natural enemies, but HIPVs may also be directly toxic to herbivores. Indole (C8H7N) is a common HIPV that is toxic to caterpillars, but its relative toxicity to different caterpillars has not been explored. I tested the toxicity of indole on six caterpillar species (Spodoptera frugiperda, Trichoplusia ni, Spodoptera exigua, Anticarsia gemmatalis, Heliothis virescens, and Helicoverpa zea). Results show that indole is …
Insect Populations Across An Urban-To-Suburban Land Use Gradient., Jacob T. Lawson
Insect Populations Across An Urban-To-Suburban Land Use Gradient., Jacob T. Lawson
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Insect populations, especially those of pollinators, have been steadily declining across the globe in recent decades, a trend that is intensified in cities. Since the conservation of pollinators is crucial for maintaining ecosystems and ecological processes, new approaches are being promoted beyond those of conserving large natural areas. Urban native plant gardens could potentially offset some of these losses locally. This research attempts to set a local baseline for the insect diversity in urban gardens in Louisville and determine whether differences exist in garden insects in cities versus suburbs in Jefferson County, Kentucky. To address the land-use question we established …
The Effect Of Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia On Gram-Negative Cystic Fibrosis Pathogens., Joshua D Stewart
The Effect Of Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia On Gram-Negative Cystic Fibrosis Pathogens., Joshua D Stewart
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal genetic disorder in the Caucasian population with an incidence of 1 per 3,000 live births and a median predicted survival of only 47 years. Respiratory failure due to repeated pathological insults to lung tissue by infection is the ultimate cause of mortality in the majority of patients. The lung microenvironment created by CF highly favors colonization by opportunistic pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Burkholderia cenocepacia, and Achromobacter xylosoxidans. Biofilm formation by multiple bacterial species contributes to the chronic, persistent, and difficult to treat nature of CF infections. This study seeks …
Effects Of Talker Variability On Categorization Of Spectrally Degraded Vowels., Emily A. Dickey
Effects Of Talker Variability On Categorization Of Spectrally Degraded Vowels., Emily A. Dickey
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
When a person listens to a context sentence with prominent higher frequencies, the subsequent vowel sound is more likely to be perceived as being of a lower frequency and vice versa. This is a spectral contrast effect (SCE). Recent work has shown that talker variability diminishes these SCEs. They were found to be smaller when 200 sentences were spoken by a different talker each time compared to one talker (Assgari & Stilp, 2015). Cochlear Implant (CI) users’ speech categorization is also influenced by SCEs but are known to struggle with talker discrimination. Here, I tested whether talker variability affected SCEs …
Louisville And The Tobacco Trade Within The Atlantic World., Jessica June Riley
Louisville And The Tobacco Trade Within The Atlantic World., Jessica June Riley
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
This thesis uses the Campbell Company of Louisville as a case study to demonstrate how tobacco from Kentucky moved throughout the Atlantic World of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, specifically as an export commodity to major trading firms in England and France. Those trading firms, such as John Holt & Company of Liverpool, used that tobacco to engage in trade through West Africa and to obtain the commodities of palm oil and palm kernel that were valuable as factory lubricants, soap, and margarine in Europe’s industrial society. Charles Campbell of the Campbell Company used social ties and personal relationships with …

The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between previous regime and democratization success to evaluate the impact of prior government system on a country’s transition to a democratic system of government. I use the Polity Project IV Democracy values for countries that democratized between 1978 and 2000 and identify the type of government as presidential or parliamentary to facilitate a bivariate analysis of democracy score and type of government prior to democratization. The chi-square test found the correlation to be statistically significant and I used case studies to show implications of unconsolidated democracies on the Democratic Peace …
Genetic Crosstalk And Its Effects On Virulence And Mating In Ustilago Maydis., John S. Desmarais
Genetic Crosstalk And Its Effects On Virulence And Mating In Ustilago Maydis., John S. Desmarais
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Ustilago maydis is a model organism for study of fungal mating and host infection. Two compatible haploid mating types must mate to form a dikaryon in order for the fungus to infect its host, corn (Zea mays). There are a variety of genetic mechanisms that regulate mating and infection in the fungus, many of which coregulate both processes. The aim of this study was to investigate how alteration of certain regulatory proteins in U. maydis affects these basic processes as well as how alteration of genes involved in signaling pathways can affect the expression of one another. Primarily, …
The Effects Of Pitch And Speaking Rate On Foreign Accented Speech Perception., Rebecca F. Davis
The Effects Of Pitch And Speaking Rate On Foreign Accented Speech Perception., Rebecca F. Davis
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Perception of foreign accent is typically studied using an accentedness rating task. For example, native English listeners rate the degree of accentedness in sentences produced by non-native English speakers. However, in past studies, it has been unclear what criteria participants used to judge accentedness. Here, native English speakers rated the accentedness of Korean-accented English sentences on a scale from 1 (strong accent) to 9 (little to no accent). Participants rated sentences that were unmodified or had one acoustic property removed. In one block, pitch contours of sentences were flattened and set to their mean values. In another block, speaking rates …
Relationships Of Protein Biomarkers Of The Urokinase Plasminogen Activator System With Expression Of Their Cognate Genes In Primary Breast Carcinomas., Seth B. Sereff
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Background: Urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), its receptor uPAR and serine protease inhibitors PAI-1 or PAI-2 play key roles in tissue membrane remodeling and invasion of basement membranes by induction of a fibrinolytic pathway. Earlier studies reported that uPA and PAI-1 protein levels in breast carcinomas assist in prediction of response to chemotherapy. Our goal is to develop molecular signatures of candidate genes and identify novel relationships with these four protein biomarkers that demonstrate clinical utility for assessment of breast carcinoma outcomes.
Methods: This retrospective study used de-identified biomarker results and clinical outcomes from primary breast cancers that were stored in …
Transcriptional Influence Of Retinoic Acid And Its Effects On Angiogenesis Of Murine Salivary Glands., Isaac Feinn
Transcriptional Influence Of Retinoic Acid And Its Effects On Angiogenesis Of Murine Salivary Glands., Isaac Feinn
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Salivary gland hypofunction is a major disorder of salivary glands, and can arise either from diseases such as xerostomia, or from defective epithelial morphogenesis during embryogenesis. Hundreds of thousands of individuals suffer from dry mouth, and there is currently no restorative therapy for these patients. Investigation of salivary gland developmental biology will inform regenerative therapies. Currently it is known that retinoic acid (RA), the biologically active form of Vitamin A, is required for proper development of the salivary gland, but little is known about its cellular mechanism regulating organogenesis. This study sought to analyze salivary gland development in Rdh10 knock …

Reactive Glutamines And A Binding Site Region Contribute To Fxiii Substrate Specificity For Fibrinogen Αc, Mohammed Hindi
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
The reaction between transglutaminase factor XIII (FXIII) and fibrin is a key process in the final stages of blood coagulation. The αC region of fibrin contains three reactive glutamines (Q237, Q328, and Q366) which are crosslinked by FXIII, as well as a FXIII anchoring site (E396). Previous work has helped elucidate the FXIII-αC interaction, but much is still unknown about the key residues in the αC region.
Four crosslinking assays were carried out to characterize the contribution of the αC anchoring site and reactive glutamines in crosslinking by FXIII. The effects of individual E396A, Q366N, and Q328P (Fibrinogen Seoul II …
