“Wall Of Force”: Analyzing The Partition Of India And Pakistan In Haroun And The Sea Of The Stories, Grace Mowery

Literary scholars have often interpreted Salman Rushdie’s children’s book Haroun and the Sea of Stories as a critique of censorship, but Eva König’s postcolonial analysis provides an alternate interpretation of the book. This essay builds upon König’s work and argues that the book instead critiques the damaged relationship between India and Pakistan following the 1947 partition. König’s inclusion of Edward Said’s views of othering in her analysis strengthens her argument, but she does not account for Rushdie’s context. Contextualizing the book within the history of the partition and accounting for Rushdie’s condemnation of it allows scholars to compare the fictionalized …

The Fifth Monarchists were a radical group of Puritans during the period of the English Civil War who sought to seize power in England in order to prepare for what they believed was Christ's inevitable return in the near future to reign in England. Previous research concerning them is scarce, and what scholarship there is does little to explain the importance of the events surrounding them. This study seeks to explain the historical significance of this group through exploring the goals of the group and the means by which they set out to accomplish them. One of these tactics was undercover operations, which were developed to combat specific varieties of crime beginning with white collar crimes and government corruption. Today, undercover operations are utilized in many other ways as well, ranging from drug stings to online operations targeting sex crimes. The Conway-Norton monstrous moonshine conjecture set off a quest to discover the connection between the Monster and the J-function. The goal of this paper is to give an overview of the components of the conjecture, the conjecture itself, and some of the ideas that led to its solution. Special focus is given to Klein's J-function.

Background and Introduction: HIV is one of the most problematic pandemics to date, currently infecting upwards of 38 million people worldwide (“The Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic,” 2020). Although infection and mortality rates have generally decreased, current prophylactic (preventive) measures against HIV-1 acquisition have shown major weaknesses that could be remedied with a vaccine (Pitisuttuthum & Marovich, 2020). MicroRNA (miRNA) is an epigenetic factor that plays an important role in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene and protein expression. Recent research has shown that in many types of cancer, differentially expressed levels of certain types of miRNA are significantly correlated with the transformation of and ongoing issues caused by cancer cells. Specifically, in Glioblastoma, one of the most lethal and aggressive human cancers, differential levels of miRNAs contribute to the cell’s lack of pro-apoptotic gene presence and its high resistance to current treatments.
