Some early adolescents may use harmful language, including racial, anti-LGBTQ+, and anti-women slurs, due to insufficient education on diversity awareness and the effects of using such language. Without addressing the use of harmful language, adolescents who are targets of the harmful language may feel ashamed of their identities. When adolescents have a better understanding of the impact of their words, they may become more conscientious of what they say and about the impact of their words on others.
