Mental illness-related stigma is a barrier to societal inclusion and productivity. With nearly one in five individuals being impacted by mental illness in the United States (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2019), there is a greater need for understanding through education to support those affected by mental illness. Stigma impacts those with mental illness in the realms of employment, housing, and incarceration. The Success Over Stigma Program located within the OMNI Resource Center in Salinas, California addresses the lack of education by offering contact-based community education delivered by those affected by mental illness. As an intern at Survivors Healing Center an issue that was identified was child sexual abuse cases are too common. The contributing factors that have a correlation to the community problem that was mentioned is denial, emotional maltreatment, and family characteristics. The consequence of the contributing factors led to depression, suicidal and a potential reacurrence of sexual abuse. The purpose of the project was to educate participants on how to support survivors who are coming forward. The purpose of this capstone was to address the increase of mental illness on children living in the United States without treatment. Mental illness is a problem that cannot be ignored in the community. The National Alliance on Mental illness works to eliminate stigma through support, education and advocacy in Monterey County. The project intended to increase awareness through the implementation of Say It Out Loud. Mental Health affects millions of individuals every year. It can affect anyone at any age. Mariposa Wellness Center Community Connections (MWC-CC) provides services and support for those not receiving the adequate treatment. There is lack of access to health care; therefore, many individuals suffer from a mental health condition without treatment leading to major consequences such as having a dysfunctional family and homelessness. As time goes by, students with mental health issues are on the rise. Students who have mental health issues face a variety of different consequences. The consequences vary from mild to severe, and that suicide being the most severe consequence. The capstone project and its implementation took place at Arroyo Seco’s counseling department.
