Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) at the University Corporation of Monterey Bay mission statement aims to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. The educational issue for low-income students is the lack of accessibility to resources that assists with preparedness and success in post-secondary education. Students aren’t able to attend college due to poverty, lack of academic preparation and familial factors. College students often lack awareness on how to identify the signs of abusive dating behavior and what to do when dating violence does occur. Consequently, many college students may fall victim to dating violence whether it is physical, sexual, verbal or controlling abuse. According to Knowledge Networks (2011), over 43% of college women have reported experiencing dating violence and over 57% of college students believe it is difficult to recognize the signs of dating violence. This study examined student’s access to advanced education and how parents, school personnel, and community members could prepare students for life beyond K-12 education. Due to the CO-VID Pandemic, this study was limited to a literature review of multiple scholarly and peer-reviewed articles. Analyzation of these articles revealed several trends in the opportunity gap, the importance of school-family-community partnerships, and the benefit of resources that assist future high school graduates with the necessary knowledge and tools needed to apply for undergraduate or vocational programs. The Veterans Services Center [VSC] of Hartnell College two primary functions, academic counseling and Veterans Affairs [VA] benefit certification. Any veteran or depending attending Hartnell is entitled to support, whether or not they are using VA benefits. From a broader perspective, campus veterans centers exist to support veterans who have, most of the time, recently left military service and are beginning their military-civilian transition. The Vet 2 Vet peer mentorship program addresses many transitional issues by pairing first semester student veterans with those in their sophomore year and currently working under the VA federal work study.
