Although the number of fluorescent protein (FP) genes cloned from the GFP family continues to increase, few studies of GFP-type pigments in non-bioluminescent, non-symbiotic organisms have been attempted. The first goal of this study was to locate, clone, characterize, and analyze fluorescent proteins from an organism exhibiting these traits in order to better understand their evolution and function. I successfully cloned two full-length GFP homologs by applying a FACS-based screening method to a cDNA library constructed from a temperate corallimorpharian, Corynactis californica. Scleractinian diseases and bleaching have been studied for about 30 years. And yet, very little is known about the vectors, pathogens, and long-term effects of coral disease and coral bleaching. In the 1990s, the reported number of coral diseases escalated significantly. This study examined the previously unknown macrofaunal of a deep-sea cold seep and two shallow hydrothermal vents. In Chapter I, I investigate a deep-sea cold seep ("Clam Field", 950m depth) located in Monterey Bay, California. In chapter II, I report upon shallow vents that were located in Bahia Concepcion (12m depth), Mexico, and in White Point (8m depth), California. I tested whether the infaunal community compositions in these systems were different from the surrounding communities, and if the observed differences were related to the abundance of food in the deep-sea and the chemosynthetic production of the cold seep. The family Alopiidae is comprised of three species: the pelagic (Alopias pelagicus), bigeye (A. superciliosus), and common (A. vulpinus) thresher sharks. Alopias pelagicus occurs only in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, while the other two species are distributed worldwide. Despite growing conservation concerns, genetic relatedness among thresher shark populations is poorly known. I examined the phylogeographic structure of each species using DNA sequences from the mitochondrial control region. The Healthy Eating & Physical Activity Curriculum is a bilingual, culturally competent educational curriculum that was developed to address the problem of childhood obesity and it is directed towards parents. This curriculum consists of an hour-long bilingual presentation (on PowerPoint) that addresses healthy eating habits, how to read a food label, and family-based physical activities. Additionally, HEPA curriculum includes detailed instructions on how to present the PowerPoint; a pre and post-test to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention in terms of knowledge gained; a directory of community based recreation/physical activity options; and relevant handouts and materials to support the presentation.

The focus of this study was to learn about student perceptions of curriculum and teaching pedagogy in their Newcomer classroom. In order to research this topic I conducted a case study of the Newcomer class that I teach. During a six-week period I implemented four teaching strategies that I believed to be affective for second language acquisition. The data collected through parent and student interviews, student free writes, as well as my own observations, reflects on these four strategies. The sandpaper skate, Bathyraja kincaidii, is commonly taken as bycatch in trawl fisheries off central California although little life history information is known for this species. To assess age, growth and reproduction, 506 Bathyraja kincaidii were collected from commercial samplers, museum collections, and monthly trawl and slope surveys conducted by the National Marine Fisheries Service since January 2002. Sexes were equally represented, with females comprising 48.8% and males 51.2% of samples collected. Females ranged from 199-610 and males from 195-635 mm total length (TL). This study examined Greek parents' perceptions of technology in childrenś education. A phenomenological research design was necessary for perceiving computer technology from parents ́perspective. Interviews were conducted in a sample consisted of 10 Greek parents, who all had experiences with computers. The findings indicated that parents of middle SES have in general positive attitudes towards computers in students ́education. Negative attitudes were not identified in middle SES participants, except of some concerns. Two worrying implications were drawing from the findings-regarding the gender stereotypes and parents ́participation in childrenś education. Recommendations are included based on the findings.

I studied the variability in Ulva spp. in Elkhorn Slough, CA temporally and spatially. I measured changes in cover and biomass and combined them to determined changes in total abundance seasonally (every three months) from July 2003 to July 2004. Over this time period I found a significant seasonal difference in Ulva cover and a significant seasonal difference in Ulva biomass. There was also a significant interaction between season and section. Total abundance followed the same pattern of change as cover, suggesting Ulva mat cover was a better indicator of total abundance in Elkhorn Slough. To determine if seasonal changes …

Standard fog collectors (SFCs) that have been used all around were set up at two locations along the Monterey County coastline. The volume of water collected by the SFCs was measured periodically, either by hand or with a data logging tipping-bucket rain gauge. Measurements were carried out from June 26 until October 16 of 2005. The average collection rate at Fort Ord for the period of June 26 to July 22 was 0.08 L/m2/d. The average amount of water collected per day for the period of July 22 to October 16 was 1.17 L/m2/d at Glen Deven Ranch and 0.37 …
