The production of materials at the nanoscale leads to novel properties and has made the field of nanotechnology a part of everyday life. Numerous applications of nanomaterials have led to their use in electronics, optics, and medicine. However, creating materials at such a small size brings them on the same scale as many biomolecules and cellular components, altering their interactions with biological systems. This can lead to unintended biological impacts as many nanomaterials are considerably more toxic than their bulk counterpart material. Potent And Potentially Non-Cardiotoxic Anthracyclines: Their Synthesis, Biological Evaluation, And Comparison Of Hydrozone-Mediated Reductions, Jerrett Holdaway

After nearly half a century since medical approval, the anthracycline doxorubicin (DOX) remains one of the most potent and clinically useful anticancer agents. In spite of its long history, however, the cytotoxic mechanisms of DOX have been debated and remain controversial. Several well-supported mechanisms will be discussed, such as the potential to intercalate DNA and induce apoptosis through topoisomerase poisoning, free radical formation, and DNA cross-linking. While DOX has substantial medical importance, it is plagued by a life-threatening dose-dependent cardiotoxic side effect associated with several structural groups. Healthy Habits, Healthy U (HHHU) is a school-based cancer prevention program. This program is a collaborative effort among Boise State University, St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute, and the Boise School District. HHHU started in April 2013 as a community outreach initiative designed to teach and reinforce positive health habits in students. HHHU lessons target eighth-grade students and offer a unique approach highlighting the relationships among nutrition, physical activity, sugar-sweetened beverages, and cancer risks, through a variety of educational materials.

Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles As Potential Novel Anticancer Therapies, Janet C. Layne

Nanoparticles (NP) are increasingly being recognized for their utility in the field of medicine, including use as drug carriers and imaging tools. We demonstrated that ZnO NP preferentially kill cancerous cells of the T cell lineage, and extended this research to evaluate other cells types, including normal and malignant B cells, and normal and malignant breast and prostate epithelial cells. Preferential ZnO nanoparticle cytotoxicity occurred for multiple types of cancer cells, but was most pronounced for non-adherent cells of hematopoietic lineage. Normal T and B lymphocytes showed the greatest resistance to NP toxicity, followed by normal breast epithelial cells, and …

In 2007, 11.7 million people in the United States were living with a cancer diagnosis. Specifically, 12 in every 100,000 Americans are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year. The five year survival rate of pancreatic cancer in the United States is only 5.6% (National Cancer Institute, 2007). In addition to traditional pharmacological treatments, physical activity has been increasingly used to help individuals successfully cope with cancer. One area that has not been studied extensively is the use of sport psychology techniques to help athletes cope with cancer. Over the past fifty years anthracyclines have been used to treat a wide variety of cancers. Combination therapies with anthracyclines have the potential to greatly increase treatment success. Despite the great potential of anthracyclines in the treatment of cancer, their use has been limited due to the risk of chronic cardiotoxicity. The reduction of anthracyclines to an alcohol metabolite has been linked to the development of cardiotoxic side effects. One of the principal enzymes responsible for catalyzing the formation of the anthracycline alcohol metabolite is human carbonyl reductase 1(HCBR). Controlling the reduction of anthracyclines by HCBR may offer a means …
