Removing The Angst From Statistics, N. Baharun, A. Porter Nov 2012

Removing The Angst From Statistics, N. Baharun, A. Porter

Associate Professor Anne Porter

This paper presents the results of a case study investigating the use of video resources in teaching statistics proven to have their impact on student learning outcomes which positively affect the student understanding of topics and reduce students’ anxiety. A two-way ANOVA is utilized to analyze the sample data from forty postgraduate students in the Health Informatics at University of Wollongong. The findings from the study show that male students are significantly more confident in their understanding of statistics topics e.g. writing meaningful paragraphs about variables (p=0.014, F=6.684), producing and interpreting scatter plots and correlations (p=0.007, F=8.388); and less anxious …

Teaching Statistics Using A Blended Approach: Integrating Technology-Based Resources, N. Baharun, A. Porter Nov 2012

Teaching Statistics Using A Blended Approach: Integrating Technology-Based Resources, N. Baharun, A. Porter

Associate Professor Anne Porter

This paper presents the results of a study investigating the use of face-to-face components of teaching and technology-based resources in teaching statistics via a blended approach. The student perspective is the focus of investigation which involved 38 on-campus students who enrolled in an introductory statistics subject at University of Wollongong. Assessment items and the laboratory manual and tasks that precede assessment were found to be of greatest importance in assisting students to understand. Students’ perceptions were that learning outcomes were positively impacted by both traditional and technologically based resources both in terms of student understanding of topics and increased their …

Learning Designs To Engage And Support Learners, N. Baharun, A. Porter Nov 2012

Learning Designs To Engage And Support Learners, N. Baharun, A. Porter

Associate Professor Anne Porter

This paper reports on a case study aimed at developing a better understanding on how to design student learning experiences using of digital technologies and in particular using video resources within the subject to engage and support learners with a view to impacting on their learning. Drawing on student learning experiences, the study examines the circumstances under which students are more likely to engage with a variety of learning resources. It seeks to identify how best to place the resources and to determine which resources components could play important roles within the subject. Outcomes from the study presents the rationale …

Improving Statistical Education Through A Learning Design, N. Baharun, Anne Porter

Associate Professor Anne Porter

This paper presents the results of a study examining the student learning experience of statistics within e-learning environment at the University of Wollongong. This study involves a cohort of 191 undergraduate students who enrolled in an Introductory Statistics subject in Autumn 2010 session. A learning design map was used within the subject e-learning site aiming at providing guidance which details out timing tasks and resources, and supports materials on week-by-week basis to students in learning the subject. The findings reveal the students gained benefits from the use of the map in helping them to learn and understand the subject; however …
