Computer Simulation Of A Biomass Gasification-Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Power System Using Aspen Plus, Wayne Doherty, Anthony Reynolds, David Kennedy

Articles

The operation and performance of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack on biomass syn-gas from a biomass gasification combined heat and power (CHP) plant is investigated. The objective of this work is to develop a model of a biomass-SOFC system capable of predicting performance under diverse operating conditions. The tubular SOFC technology is selected. The SOFC stack model, equilibrium type based on Gibbs free energy minimisation, is developed using Aspen Plus. The model performs heat and mass balances and considers ohmic, activation and concentration losses for the voltage calculation. The model is validated against data available in the literature …

Simulation Of A Tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Stack Operating On Biomass Syngas Using Aspen Plus, Wayne Doherty, Anthony Reynolds, David Kennedy

Articles

A tubular solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack was modelled and its operation on biomass syn-gas was investigated. The objective of this work was to develop a computer simulation model of a biomass gasification-SOFC (BG-SOFC) system capable of predicting performance under various operating conditions and using diverse fuels. The stack was modelled using Aspen Plus and considers ohmic, activation and concentration losses. It was validated against published data for operation on natural gas. Operating parameters such as fuel and air utilisation factor Uf and Ua, current density j and steam to carbon ratio STCR were varied and …

Simulation Procedure For The Co-Optimization Of Photovoltaic Water Pumping Systems., Brian Norton Jan 2010

Simulation Procedure For The Co-Optimization Of Photovoltaic Water Pumping Systems., Brian Norton

Articles

Abstract: Photovoltaic (PV)-powered centrifugal water pumping systems have been modelled based on field experience and analysis of long-term measured performance of several installed PV-powered water pumping systems. This paper presents detailed modelling of a PV array, an inverter, a three-phase induction motor, a centrifugal pump, a well, a storage tank, an overflow controller, and an integrated reverse osmosis desalination unit. The component models were validated using both laboratory measurements and long-term monitored data. All system components have been modelled separately, and the system was modelled in TRNSYS. The models are capable of simulating grid-connected, diesel-powered, and PV-powered water pumping systems, …

Quantitative Modelling Approaches For Ascorbic Acid Degradation And Non-Enzymatic Browning Of Orange Juice During Ultrasound Processing, Vasilis Valdramidis, Patrick Cullen, Brijesh Tiwari, Colm O’Donnell Jan 2010

Quantitative Modelling Approaches For Ascorbic Acid Degradation And Non-Enzymatic Browning Of Orange Juice During Ultrasound Processing, Vasilis Valdramidis, Patrick Cullen, Brijesh Tiwari, Colm O’Donnell

Articles

The objective of this study was to develop a deterministic modelling approach for non-enzymatic browning (NEB) and ascorbic acid (AA) degradation in orange juice during ultrasound processing. Freshly squeezed orange juice was sonicated using a 1,500 W ultrasonic processor at a constant frequency of 20 kHz and processing variables of amplitude level (24.4 – 61.0 μm), temperature (5 – 30 oC) and time (0 – 10 min). The rate constants of the NEB and AA were estimated by a primary model (zero and first order) while their relationship with respect to the processing factors was tested for a number of …

Preservatives are required to maintain the quality, extend shelf life, and ensure safety of fresh and processed food products. Although chemical preservatives form an essential part in food preservation, legislation has restricted their use in different foods. Vegetables in the Brassica family (Cabbage, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts) are a rich source of a number of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, glucosinolates and their breakdown products which may have antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer properties. The present study investigates the antimicrobial activities of solvent extract from Irish York cabbage, Brocolli and Brussels Sprouts on the growth inhibition of common food spoilage (Listeria monocytogenes …
