Basics Of Focusing Schlieren Systems, Andrew Davidhazy Dec 1998

Basics Of Focusing Schlieren Systems, Andrew Davidhazy

Articles

Among flow visualization techniques, the Focusing Schlieren system has been largely ignored by the field. It is, however, a low cost solution to solving visualization of density gradients, a system with good sensitivity to visualize convection patterns in liquids or gases such as warm air rising from a flame or heated object and ultimately it is also a powerful tool for teaching many optics related principles.

Measurement Of Degree Of Order In Mixed Polarised Fluorescent Polymer Liquid Crystal Films, Andrew Davey, Robert Howard, Bernd Lahr, Hugh Byrne Dec 1998

Measurement Of Degree Of Order In Mixed Polarised Fluorescent Polymer Liquid Crystal Films, Andrew Davey, Robert Howard, Bernd Lahr, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Raman spectroscopy is used to investigate the degree of order found in in situ photopolymerised films exhibiting polarised emission. Studies indicate that the mixed system shows differing degrees of order for its two molecular components. The degree of order was measured in the liquid mesophase for the mixed monomers prior to polymerisation and was found to be in close agreement with the order of the two components measured in equivalent cured films.

Infrared Photography Experiment With Agfa Ephoto 1280 Camera, Andrew Davidhazy Nov 1998

Infrared Photography Experiment With Agfa Ephoto 1280 Camera, Andrew Davidhazy

Articles

After an unsuccessful initial attempt to determine the useability of a digital camera for near infrared photography, further experiments proved that there is sufficient residual sensitivity in an Agfa 1280's CCD sensor to make passable infrared photos that simulate those made with film.

Luminescence Properties Of Thin Film Ta2 Zn3 O8 And Mn Doped Ta2 Zn3 O8, Philip D. Rack, Michael D. Potter, Santosh Kurinec, Wounjhang Park, John Penczek, Brent K. Wagner, Christopher J. Summers Oct 1998

Luminescence Properties Of Thin Film Ta2 Zn3 O8 And Mn Doped Ta2 Zn3 O8, Philip D. Rack, Michael D. Potter, Santosh Kurinec, Wounjhang Park, John Penczek, Brent K. Wagner, Christopher J. Summers

Articles

Blue luminescence from TaZZn30g and green luminescence from Mn doped TaZZn30g has been observed under low voltage cathodoluminescent excitation, In this article , the luminescence mechanisms of TaZZn30g and Mn doped TaZZn30 g are discussed in detail. The results suggest that the intrinsic blue luminescence of TaZZn30g results from a metal-to-ligand transition, whereas the green luminescence of Mn doped TaZZn30g results from the Mn 4T 1-6A I transition. The suppression of the blue intrinsic luminescence in Mn doped TaZZn30g suggests that efficient energy transfer from the host material to the Mn occurs. This energy transfer phenomenon is also discussed by …

Thinking Like A Lawyer Or Acting Like A Judge: A Response To Professor Simon, David Yellen Oct 1998

Thinking Like A Lawyer Or Acting Like A Judge: A Response To Professor Simon, David Yellen

Articles

Professor William Simon argues that the principal professional responsibility of all lawyers should be to "seek justice."' He defines this as pursuing the client's rights, but not the client's interests, if those interests are incompatible with the "truth." As a concrete example of this approach, Professor Simon states that it would normally be inappropriate for a lawyer to subject a vulnerable, but accurate, witness to cross examination intended to create the impression that the witness' testimony was mistaken.

In my view, Professor Simon's position would not really further "justice" at all. In these brief comments, by focusing on the likely …

Distributing Your Inheritance Fairly: Equity Theory And Will Power, Morton Isaacs Sep 1998

Distributing Your Inheritance Fairly: Equity Theory And Will Power, Morton Isaacs

Articles

187 Ss simulated distributing $100,000 in a will to their three children, one of whom was described as High Equity/Low Need, one described s Low Equity/High Need, and one described as Low Equity/Low Need. The majority of Ss allocated equal amounts of money to all their children, although a substantial minority chose to give more to the needy child. Few chose to assign more to the High Equity/Low Need child. Both respondents' gender and age influenced the pattern of distribution but not the targets' gender. The implications of the results for Equity Theory are discussed.

Measured Stark Widths And Shifts Of Several Niii Sectral Lines: Temperature Dependence, Stevan Djenize, Vladimir Milosavljevic

Articles

Stark parameters (width and shift) of four doubly ionized nitrogen spectral lines, that belong to 3s-3p and 3p-3d transitions (lower multiplets), have been measured in a linear pulsed, low pressure, arc discharge in the nitrogen-oxygen and helium-nitrogen-oxygen plasmas in a (30 000 - 54 000) K electron temperature and a (0.75 1023 - 2.8 1023) electron density ranges. The measured values have been compared to the existing experimental and calculated data.

Diversity Combining In Antenna Array Base Station Receiver For Ds/Cdma System, C. H. Gowda, V. Annampedu, R. Viswanathan Jul 1998

Diversity Combining In Antenna Array Base Station Receiver For Ds/Cdma System, C. H. Gowda, V. Annampedu, R. Viswanathan

Articles

We evaluate using simulation studies the performance of several schemes for combining base station antenna array signals in wireless direct sequence code-division multiple access (DS/CDMA). The results indicate that under certain assumptions, on multiple access interference statistics, the probability of error of modified rank test (MRT) is lower than that of equal gain combining (EGC), if a few high power interfering users are present along with a low power user of interest. If there are a moderately large number of users, and if the received power of all the users are nearly the same, then EGC out performs MRT. In …

A Behavioral Approach To Law And Economics, Cass R. Sunstein, Christine Jolls, Richard H. Thaler

Articles

Economic analysis of law usually proceeds under the assumptions of neoclassical economics. But empirical evidence gives much reason to doubt these assumptions; people exhibit bounded rationality, bounded self-interest, and bounded willpower. This article

The Problematics Of Moral And Legal Theory, Richard A. Posner May 1998

The Problematics Of Moral And Legal Theory, Richard A. Posner

Articles

In these Holmes Lectures, delivered a century after the publication of Oliver Wendell Holmes's great essay The Path of the Law, Judge Posner argues for an essentially Holmesian conception of the proper relations among modern normative moral philosophy ("academic moralism"), morality, and law. Academic moralism, he argues, lacks either the intellectual cogency or the emotional power to change people's beliefs or behavior; the power to do so resides in "moral entrepreneurs," which academic moralists emphatically are not. Academic moralism's lack of cogency disqualifies it to guide judicial decisionmaking even - in fact, especially - in cases involving controversial moral issues, …

Quality And Shelf-Life Of Fresh Cut Crrot Slices As Affected By Slicing Method, Catherine Barry-Ryan, David O'Beirne Prof May 1998

Quality And Shelf-Life Of Fresh Cut Crrot Slices As Affected By Slicing Method, Catherine Barry-Ryan, David O'Beirne Prof

Articles

The effects of slicing method on the quality and storage-life of modified atmo¬sphere packaged carrot slices were determined using microscopy, sensory evalu¬ation, microbial counts and a range of physical and chemical tests. Slicing caused physical damage, physiological stress and enhanced microbial growth. The se¬verity of these effects were in the order of blunt machine blade > sharp machine blade > razor blade. These findings provide insights into the magnitude and ba¬sis of slicing effects and also confirm the importance of gentle processing and the use of a sharp blade.

Ascorbic Acid Retention In Shredded Iceberg Lettuce As Affected By Minimal Processing, Catherine Barry-Ryan, David O'Beirne Apr 1998

Ascorbic Acid Retention In Shredded Iceberg Lettuce As Affected By Minimal Processing, Catherine Barry-Ryan, David O'Beirne

Articles

The effects of slicing method, packaging atmosphere and storage temperature were determined on total ascorbic acid (TAA) content of modified atmosphere packaged shredded lettuce. TAA was extracted from the lettuce samples and levels were monitored using either titration with 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol solution or an assay kit. Slicing affected (p < 0.05) ascorbic acid retention in the order manual tearing > manual slicing > machine slicing. Flushing with 100% nitrogen increased retention (~5%, p < 0.05) over packages with product modified atmospheres. Storage at 3°C increased retention (~20%, p < 0.05) compared with storage at 8°C. Scores for product appearance generally followed losses of TAA in the lettuce (p < 0.05).

Robert Latimer was born in 1953 on a farm on the prairies of Saskatchewan and grew up to own a 1,280-acre farm. In 1980 he married, and that year Tracy, the first of four children, was born. During her birth, Tracy's brain was terribly damaged by lack of oxygen, and severe cerebral palsy ensued. By 1993 Tracy could laugh, smile, and cry, and she could recognize her parents and her siblings. But she could not understand her own name or even simple words like "yes" and "no." She could not swallow well and would so often vomit her parents kept …

Bordetella Holmesii-Like Organisms Associated With Septicemia, Endocarditis, And Respiratory Failure, Perry J. Severance, Yi-Wei Tang, Marlene K. Hopkins, Christopher P. Kolbert, Paul A. Hartley, David H. Persing Feb 1998

Bordetella Holmesii-Like Organisms Associated With Septicemia, Endocarditis, And Respiratory Failure, Perry J. Severance, Yi-Wei Tang, Marlene K. Hopkins, Christopher P. Kolbert, Paul A. Hartley, David H. Persing

Articles

We recovered an unusual bacterial strain from blood or sputum of three patients with septicemia, endocarditis, and/or respiratory failure. The three isolates were thin, curved, gram-negative, light brown, pigment-producing bacilli with variable catalase activity. They were asaccharolytic, oxidasenegative, nonmotile, and fastidious. Identification was not possible on the basis of these characteristics alone or in combination with cellular fatty acid profiles. Nucleic acid amplification and sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that all three isolates were identical and most closely related to the emerging pathogen Bordetella holmesii, diverging from the published sequence at three nucleotide positions (99.8% similarity). …
