  • The impervious surface created by highway in the state of Georgia and the United States collects and transports a large volume of stormwater into water bodies.

  • United States highways and bridge system is one of the contributors for non-point source pollution stated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Highway stormwater runoff constitutes significant pollutants such as total suspended solids (TSS), “heavy metal”, nutrients, organic contaminants, oil and grease which harm and impact water quality and endangered aquatic species.
