For centuries, scientists have been intrigued by the high amount of biodiversity that is found in the deserts of North America. Recently, several studies have investigated the causes of the high diversity found in desert-dwelling mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. These studies have found that many of these organisms seem to have diversified in response to the same historical events. Little work has been done, however, on diverse desert-dwelling insect groups. In this dissertation, I investigate the patterns of genetic diversity in four groups of nocturnal wasps called velvet ants. I compare the patterns of genetic diversity to the historical events …

Making extensive use of oral interviews with the surviving children, this thesis is an biography of Oscar and Emma Swett and their children, who lived on a homestead in Greendale, Utah, (near Flaming Gorge Reservoir) from 1909 to 1970. The family is representative of a group of families who moved to Greendale and engaged in small-scale cattle ranching. The introduction of new technology changed their lifestyles and homestead economics, while simultaneously Greendale evolved from a rural agricultural environment to become part of a National Recreation Area.

This study is an examination of the contributions made by Captain Dan Jones, called the father of the Welsh Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a pioneer to the Great Basin. Jones was one of the all-time missionary greats, instrumental in converting over 5,000 Welsh people and their introduction into the Utah pioneer society. He operated a steamboat on the Mississippi for the Mormon Church and later a commercial boat on the Great Salt Lake for Brigham Young. Jones headed a steambot expedition in opposition to an attempted kidnapping of Joseph Smith in Illinois. The …

Lot Smith helped build much of Utah and Arizona history.
