A Study Of The New Sodia Program In Elementary Teacher Education At Utah State University, Larry D. Klein May 1974

A Study Of The New Sodia Program In Elementary Teacher Education At Utah State University, Larry D. Klein

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was designed to compare elementary teacher preparation programs at Utah State University as a basis for evaluation of the SODIA program. SODIA is the acronym for a new elementary teacher preparation program initiated in the Fall of 1972 which was designed to be field centered and competency based.

The population of the study consisted of 104 elementary student teachers enrolled in student teaching during Fall and Winter Quarters of the 1973-74 academic year. There were four groups identified by the type of preparation program they had experienced. The groups were SODIA (the new program for preparing elementary teachers), …

Endemic Whitefishes Of Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho: A Problem In Systematics, Robert G. White May 1974

Endemic Whitefishes Of Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho: A Problem In Systematics, Robert G. White

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The systematic status of whitefishes endemic to Bear lake, Utah-Idaho, has remained tenuous since their original description. Clarification of this problem was the major objective of the present study. The general approach was an integrated one, including examination of morphological, biochemical and ecological parameters; artificial hybrids were produced and compared with questionable groups from the natural population.

Morphological analysis revealed five forms of Bear Lake whitefishes Prosopium gemmiferum (Bonneville cisco) and P. abyssicola (Bear lake whitefish) were well differentiated from other forms and were treated as originally described. The P. spilonotus (Bonneville whitefish) group, however, was found to be made …

Antelope Island Study: Guidelines For Recreational Land Use Planning For Antelope Island, Utah, Using Computer Techniques, Robert D. Scott Jr. May 1974

Antelope Island Study: Guidelines For Recreational Land Use Planning For Antelope Island, Utah, Using Computer Techniques, Robert D. Scott Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Throughout the history of traditional land use planning, justification for allocating a land use for a particular area has been accomplished generally in a debilitated fashion. For example, decisions have generally been arrived at by (1) political process--incorporating fringe areas into present land use patterns, or (2) short-term revenue producers are given a land use change from a tax base incentive, or (3) revelations implemented, or other subjective justifications. Except in very few instances, data used to base land use planning decisions was not accurately interpreted for adequate input or not even gathered.

Recently, new and innovative methods for land …

Opinions Of Selected Utah High School Students And Teachers Toward Sports Competition, Carole C. Kimball May 1974

Opinions Of Selected Utah High School Students And Teachers Toward Sports Competition, Carole C. Kimball

Identification Of Landscape Site Development Criteria And Compilation For Fossil Fuel Electric Power Plants Applied To A Critique Of Huntington Canyon Power Plant, Huntington, Utah, Thomas Franklin Manns Ii May 1974

Identification Of Landscape Site Development Criteria And Compilation For Fossil Fuel Electric Power Plants Applied To A Critique Of Huntington Canyon Power Plant, Huntington, Utah, Thomas Franklin Manns Ii

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis project will explore the landscape site development of fossil fuel steam electric stations as it is presently practiced by electric utility companies, to determine what architectural, engineering, aesthetic, and climatological problems are being created through the engineering requirements acting upon' the site during site development and construction phases of power stations. It will identify typical problem areas that can be resolved by the Landscape Architect through the practical application of landscape architecture principles, the design use and influence of plant material, topography, and the environment. Design criteria will then be formulated for the site development of steam electric …

An Economic Analysis Of Demand And Supply For Irrigation Water In Utah: A Linear Programming Approach, Mark Holland Anderson May 1974

An Economic Analysis Of Demand And Supply For Irrigation Water In Utah: A Linear Programming Approach, Mark Holland Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water provides the lifeblood of Utah's agricultural economy. It Is the subject of much controversy and litigation and yet most opinions on the subject are based on opinions and prejudice rather than upon the basis of sound scientific examination. This paper attempts to provide some of the economic information necessary for sound decisions in the development and use of Utah's water resources with respect to agriculture.

Utah has been divided into ten drainage regions (hydrologic subregions) and the presently irrigated and potentially irrigable land according to land class was estimated for each county or portion of a county within each …

A Comparative Study Of Conventional Exercise And Weight Training Of College Women At Utah State University, Virginia Gayle Oleksiak May 1974

A Comparative Study Of Conventional Exercise And Weight Training Of College Women At Utah State University, Virginia Gayle Oleksiak

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Women are now making use of weight training for improving strength, flexibility and body contours. Most studies on weight training have used male subjects. This study compared the results of a conventional exercising program and a weight training program for reducing inches in the circumferences of the right upper arm, pectorals, waist, hips, and right thigh.

The subjects were twenty-nine female students in figure control classes at Utah State University. The control group of sixteen subjects exercised in the conventional manner, and the experimental group of thirteen subjects exercised on the weight training machine. Subjects were asked not to change …

Economic Feasibility Of Controlling Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata) On State And Private Rangelands In Utah, Stan D. Hinckley May 1974

Economic Feasibility Of Controlling Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata) On State And Private Rangelands In Utah, Stan D. Hinckley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Spraying with the chemical herbicide 2,4-D is the most widely used method of controlling big sagebrush. Spraying is very effective in increasing forage production and generally is not poisonous to either man or animals.

Two procedures can be used to calculate the internal rate of return to big sagebrush control: standard and modified discounting. Standard discounting assumes all nonuse costs are incurred in the year of treatment, and the annual income stream is constant throughout the effective life of treatment. Modified discounting correctly assumes the nonuse cost is incurred in the period of deferment, and the income stream does not …

Comparison Of Transition Matrices Between Metropolitan And Non-Metropolitan Areas In The State Of Utah Using Juvenile Court Data, Sung-Ik Song May 1974

Comparison Of Transition Matrices Between Metropolitan And Non-Metropolitan Areas In The State Of Utah Using Juvenile Court Data, Sung-Ik Song

The purpose of this paper is to use Markov Chains for the study of youths referred to the juvenile court in the metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas of the state of Utah.

Two computer programs were written for creating case histories for each person referred to the court and for testing for the significance of the difference among several transition matrices.

Another computer program, which was written by Soo Hong Uh, was used for analyzing realizations of a Markov chains up to the 4th order; a third computer program, originally written by David White, was used for interpreting Markov chains.
