Pellet Seeding On Sagebrush Range, Gordon E. Gatherum

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Seeding deteriorated range lands efficiently and economically has become one of the most promising means of improving the agricultural economy of the western range states. By providing the most rapid means of increasing the quantity and improving the quality of forage for livestock, and aiding in the prevention of soil erosion, artificial seeding contributes directly to the stability of agriculture.

Although many successful methods of artificial revegetation have been developed by experience and through research, there is still a great need for refinement in techniques to insure better overall success and greater economy of operation. Improper methods often result in …

A Study Of The Changes Of Personality, Attitudes, And Speech Problems Of An Adult Stutterer While Undergoing Speech Therapy, Halvor P. Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There are more than one million stutterers in the United States today, no less than 350,000 of whom are public school children (21). Rogers (22) estimated that the number of stuttering children in the United States is five times as many as the combined numbers of blind and deaf children. The incidence of stuttering is around one percent of the population (2,6,20). Around 20,000 stutterers are added to the number annually each year (13). Stutterers have been helped by many different methods of treatment based on many conflicting theories and therapies.

The Effect Of Ddt Upon The Digestion And Utilization Of Certain Nutrients By Dairy Calves, Verle R. Bohman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane or DDT as it is more commonly known, was first used extensively by the armed forces in the Pacific Area during World War II. This insecticide is not only a very toxic contact and stomach poison, but also is quite residual on most types of surfaces. Because of these qualities, it was selected to control the malaria mosquito and thus aided in the conquest of many disease-ridden islands of the Pacific.

When DDT became available to the general public after the war, it was found not only to be effective against mosquitoes but also many other types of insects. …

Inheritance Of 16 Barley Characters And Their Linkage Relationships, Tejpal Singh Gill May 1951

Inheritance Of 16 Barley Characters And Their Linkage Relationships, Tejpal Singh Gill

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The assignment of genetic factors to definite loci in the hereditary mechanism has been a great step in the progress of biology. Of the cereal crops, barley (Hordeum sp.), a crop of economic importance, offers a superior opportunity for genetic studies. Its adaptation to wide varieties of conditions, with a wealth of easily differentiated characters and only seven pairs of chromosomes, the barley plant provides excellent material for linkage studies.

Although there is a vast amount of literature dealing with inheritance in barley, yet knowledge of the subject is still very limited. The mode of inheritance of about one hundred …

Fertilizer Trials On Dryland Winter Wheat, I. G. Sampson May 1951

Fertilizer Trials On Dryland Winter Wheat, I. G. Sampson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wheat is one of the major crops of Utah and for more than 50 years farmers have been raising wheat on the dry lands of the state. The system they use is known as the alternate cropping or crop-follow system and consists of one year of crop alternating with one year of clean cultivation known as fallow.

Wheat removes a considerable amount of the natural plant food elements from the soil each year. This is especially true of nitrogen. According to Bracken and Greaves (9) the original low supply of nitrogen in most Utah soils together with the depleting effects …

Varietal Response In Alfalfa For Seed Production As Affected By Lygus Infestation And Related Factors, A. Glenn Wahlquist

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa is one of the most valuable of our forage crops. A dependable source of seed is therefore a primary essential to the success of our present system of agriculture. More than 70 million pounds of alfalfa seed are required each year in the United States to maintain the present hay and pasture acreage of this crop; and the annual demand for seed would increase to more than 100 million pounds if the acreage were expanded to the extent recommended for soil conservation and a balanced agricultural security.

A Population Study Of The South Cache Elk Herd, Roger James Mccormack May 1951

Elk, because of their wide ranging habit and frequently inaccessible habitat, are among our least known big game animals. As a result the management of elk herds has been handicapped by a lack of essential information. Population numbers remain unknown, ranges undefined, and decimating factors unevaluated to cite but three conditions which hamper efficient management on a long range basis.

Use Of Dk Cheese Starter In Manufacture Of Commercial Cheddar Cheese, Carl Anthon Ernstrom May 1951

Use Of Dk Cheese Starter In Manufacture Of Commercial Cheddar Cheese, Carl Anthon Ernstrom

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Several months' curing time is needed to give cheddar cheese the desirable flavor demanded by the market. The exact length of time required for curing depends upon the flavor intensity desired, but the curing process is always costly and time-consuming.

The practice of making cheddar cheese from pasteurized milk is now common throughout the industry. Many progressive cheese factories are pasteurizing their milk and enjoying the consequent benefits from a higher quality product. Although pasteurization has eliminated many of the quality problems in cheesemaking, it has resulted in even slower curing cheese.

Much of the cheese research now being carried …

Application Of Pheasant Census Methods In Cache County, Utah, Gordon L. Zorb

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An inventory of the stock on hand is a basic step in management. This is true whether the field be business, land, or wildlife management. It is a marginal business man who ignores the basic step of inventory. In the history of wildlife management, however, it has not been unusual to find the cart before the horse. This is not to say that the wildlife manager is, or has been, marginal. His business was inherited ready-made, but often in a bankrupt condition. The problems were there, but not the background of records, techniques, or methodology to cope with them. Often …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

With population, industry, and irrigation ever increasing in the arid west, there arises new and greater demands for water. Much of the water now urgently needed is lost as seepage from the many miles of canals in the western states.

Rohwer and Stout (18) have estimated that in the western states from one-third to one-half of the water diverted for irrigation is lost before it reaches the farmers' fields. Of these losses, seepage probably accounts for the greatest loss. It is reported by the Bureau of Reclamation (14) that, of the 14,600,000 acre feet of water diverted on 36 projects …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the vernacular of higher education, withdrawal from college before graduation is known as student mortality. Staying for the full course of study is called survival. "Students and their parents so often fix their attention on the business of gaining admission to college that they fall into the easy error of thinking that a degree will automatically follow from the allotted time spent there. The fact is that, on average, half of the class will have fallen by the wayside."

This study is not an attempt to set down the reason for the student mortality at the Utah State Agricultural …

An Evaluation Of Necessary Elements For Desirable Industrial Arts Instruction In The Elementary Schools Of Utah, Lee W. Ralphs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An essential part of the elementary school curriculum is the creative activity program connected with it. Educators believe that the fullest development of the child can best be attained through a program which provides a series of well selected experiences and activities. At present education considers the whole child--his abilities, needs, and interests--as vital factors in the development of a good curriculum, instead of merely the concrete and formal subject matter. Recently there has been an expressed view, by administrators of elementary school systems and many authorities and industrial arts teachers, that there is a definite need for formulating an …

The Effect Of Common Contaminants On Cheese Starter, Ivan R. Miller May 1951

The Effect Of Common Contaminants On Cheese Starter, Ivan R. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Starter is the "heart" of the cheese making industry. Only by proper handling of starter can good quality cheese be made. The economic loss from contaminated starter may prove disastrous to a cheese plant if proper corrective measures are not taken.

Milk usually contains a variety of bacteria. Under plant conditions some of these bacteria get into the mother starter or bulk starter unless extreme caution is used. Comparatively little is known about how one organism influences another when grown in milk. This problem is important in the cheese industry.

The Freezing Point Of Water In Puddled And Unpuddled Soils At Different Soil Moisture Tension Values, Robert B. Campbell May 1951

The Freezing Point Of Water In Puddled And Unpuddled Soils At Different Soil Moisture Tension Values, Robert B. Campbell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A technique that will adequately describe the physical condition of water in the soil has long been desired by scientists. The method should include the effect of soluble materials on the osmotic pressure of the soil solution, and also the effect of surface force action between the soil and soil water.

Parker (8) demonstrated that the freezing point was reduced in the presence of finely divided material. This suggested the possibility of using the cryoscopic procedure to measure the physical condition of water soil. More recently, the introduction of Thermistors for accurate temperature measurement have made it desirable to investigate …

Some Relationships Of Potassium To Lime-Induced Chlorosis, Wilford H. Robinson May 1951

Some Relationships Of Potassium To Lime-Induced Chlorosis, Wilford H. Robinson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Chlorosis, the yellowing of plant leaves, results from reduced synthesis of chlorophyll. It is caused by a deficiency or an unbalance of essential nutrient elements. The amount and pattern of yellowing varies with the cause and severity of the disturbance. Chlorosis results in reduced vigor of the affected plants and a corresponding loss in quantity and quality of the product grown. In severe cases chlorosis may lead to the eventual death of the plant.
