Enhancing The Social Interactions Of Preschool Children With Autism: The Effectiveness Of A Peer-Mediated Intervention, Marjorie Katherine Mccalla

Deficits in social interactions are considered the defining feature of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and are a powerful predictor of individual outcomes. Although a wide variety of methods for improving social skills in individuals with ASD have been examined, it is still unclear what approaches are most effective. This pilot study evaluated the efficacy of a new manualized social skills intervention package for preschoolers with ASD that integrated methods with demonstrated efficacy (i.e., ABA, peer training, and video modeling). Approximately two thirds of the intervention were delivered during free play in the classroom and on the playground, allowing children to …

AUTISM AND WORK: THE IMPACT OF COMORBIDITY ON EMPLOYMENT KAREN HARRIS MEDICAL SOCIOLOGY ABSTRACT There is a growing population of adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the United States that desire participation in the workforce, yet this population is the least employed out of those with disabilities. This study is framed in a theoretical underpinning of stigma, and undertaken to determine if comorbidity (physical or mental or both) and social support are key factors in employment among the ASD population. Using data from the Interactive Autism Network (IAN) Research Database, nested logistic regression was performed on 222 adults ranging …

Integrated Functioning Of The Mirror Neuron System And Its Role In Imitation Deficits In Autism, Heather Wadsworth

All ETDs from UAB

Deficits in imitation have been widely reported in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A proposed dysfunction of the mirror neuron system (MNS), the neural network underlying imitation, has been the subject of recent debate in ASD literature. However, while some research has found evidence of MNS abnormalities in ASD, recent studies have cast doubt onto the mirror neuron hypothesis of ASD as it is currently depicted. There is also behavioral evidence that the imitation deficit is not unitary, and therefore may not have one-to-ne correspondence with a malfunction of all aspects of MNS. Since functional imitation involves …

Parent And Child Factors In Relation To Mealtime Problem Behavior Of Children With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Eva Trinh

All ETDs from UAB

Many parents of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) describe their child as a picky eater (Rogers et al., 2012; Suarez et al., 2014). Compared to typically developing children, children with a diagnosis of ASD are reported to experience more sensory sensitivity to the taste, smell, or texture of food (Baranek et al., 2006; Lane, Molloy, & Bishop, 2014; Nadon et al., 2011; Schoen et al., 2009), present with anxious behaviors that may relate to food (Farrow & Coulthard, 2012; Williams et al., 2001), and have a variety of mealtime problem behaviors (Bandini et al., 2010; Dominick et …
