Efficacy Meets Inquiry: Impact Of Lesson Study And Reflective Inquiry On The Development Of Novice Teacher Self-Efficacy, Taylor B. Hering
Efficacy Meets Inquiry: Impact Of Lesson Study And Reflective Inquiry On The Development Of Novice Teacher Self-Efficacy, Taylor B. Hering
All Dissertations
Novice teachers often struggle to meet the demands of an expansive workload in their first years in the classroom. As reality sets in, district, school, parent, and communal needs often diminish the excitement of their first classroom, thus leading to low rates of teacher efficacy and early-career burnout. This is an educational dilemma because teacher vacancies are rising in schools such as Mockingbird High, a southeastern school with high poverty rates and varying racial demographics. This study aimed to determine if Lewis and Hurd’s (2011) lesson study model, an instructional intervention, influences novice teacher efficacy during the transitional period from …
A Narrative Inquiry Of Selected Women’S Career Pathways To State-Level Leadership In Agriculture, Timothy Keown
A Narrative Inquiry Of Selected Women’S Career Pathways To State-Level Leadership In Agriculture, Timothy Keown
All Dissertations
In this study, I used a qualitative narrative inquiry to examine stories from three individually selected state-level agricultural sector women leaders as they described their career paths to leadership roles. This purpose of the study was to address the problem of a lack of practical understanding of women leaders’ experiences in pursuing, achieving, and keeping leadership roles within the agricultural industry. The existing literature shows that women are less likely to hold an agriculture leadership role in their career. To establish the research question, I used feminist educational theory. This theoretical framework and the associated epistemology of narrative inquiry served …

Diabetes Self-Management Education And Support: Understanding Knowledge And The Impact, Christina Dietz
All Dissertations
Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. To address this, many organizations employ diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs to aid in managing the impact of increasing prevalence. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the impact of two Upstate South Carolina DSMES programs on several process and outcome measures for adults with diabetes, while also identifying current primary care provider DSMES knowledge and perceptions in an Upstate South Carolina health system.
This dissertation found inconclusive results on the impact of DSMES on PCP utilization, retinal exam screening, nephropathy attention, HDL, LDL, TC, and TG. DSME …
Genetics And Genomics Education Among Physician Assistants, Wesley Patterson
Genetics And Genomics Education Among Physician Assistants, Wesley Patterson
All Dissertations
This dissertation comprises five chapters to describe genetics and genomics education among physician assistant/associate (PA) students and practicing PAs. Chapter I introduces the gap in supply and demand of genetic services, the need for non-genetics healthcare providers to fill the gap, and the PA profession as a solution.
Chapter II is a rapid literature review that summarizes the available literature regarding genetics and genomics education for PAs. A paucity of literature exists to describe the current state of PA genetics-genomics education. The few studies retrieved describe content being taught in PA programs, the number of genetics-genomics contact hours PA students …
A Qualitative Study Of Connected Middle And High School Broadcast Journalism Programs And Their Relationship To Career Broadcast Journalism, Michelle Fowler
A Qualitative Study Of Connected Middle And High School Broadcast Journalism Programs And Their Relationship To Career Broadcast Journalism, Michelle Fowler
All Dissertations
The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to understand how aspects of connected middle and high school broadcast journalism programs employ and evince properties of the professional broadcast journalism field. I consulted two participant groups consisting of four broadcast educators from two connected broadcast programs, each containing one middle and one high school, as well as a focus group of five professional broadcast journalists. Using a curriculum theory lens and thematic data analysis, I determined similarities between the connected education programs and the broadcast journalism field in order to highlight the benefits of broadcast journalism education for students (and …
The Community Of Inquiry Effect On Learning For An Online Course, Robert Dawson Coffey
The Community Of Inquiry Effect On Learning For An Online Course, Robert Dawson Coffey
All Dissertations
Technology is transforming higher education by removing geographic constraints for both students and instructors and increasing learning and cooperation with internet-based applications. Bloom’s taxonomy continues to play a significant role in instructional design for both the classroom and online, but other theories that address the challenges of designing and teaching effective online courses have emerged. Also, classroom techniques, many learned as a teaching assistant in graduate school, may not transfer to an online environment. The Community of Inquiry framework (CoI), which originated in 1999 in response to online education, emphasizes the importance of teaching, social, and cognitive presences as necessary …
Connections Between Future Time Perspectives And Self-Regulated Learning For Mid-Year Engineering Students: A Multiple Case Study, Justine Chasmar
Connections Between Future Time Perspectives And Self-Regulated Learning For Mid-Year Engineering Students: A Multiple Case Study, Justine Chasmar
All Dissertations
This dissertation presents multiple studies with the purpose of understanding the connections between undergraduate engineering students' motivations, specifically students' Future Time Perspectives (FTPs) and Self-Regulated Learning (SRL). FTP refers to the views students hold about the future and how their perceptions of current tasks are affected by these views. SRL connects the behaviors, metacognition, and motivation of students in their learning. The goals of this research project were to 1) qualitatively describe and document engineering students' SRL strategies, 2) examine interactions between engineering students' FTPs and SRL strategy use, and 3) explore goal-setting as a bridge between FTP and SRL. …
Three Essays On Urban Location Choice And Urban Growth, Adam A. Millsap
Three Essays On Urban Location Choice And Urban Growth, Adam A. Millsap
All Dissertations
This dissertation encompasses three papers. My first paper contributes to the larger literature on the effect of individual-level characteristics on urban location choice by examining whether young people aged 25 - 34 with a bachelor's degree or higher are more likely to live in central cities in 2011 than in 1990. In 1990 37% of 25 - 34 year olds (Baby Boomers) living within a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) lived in a central city. By 2011 the percentage of young people (Millennials) living in a MSA that lived in a central city had declined to 33%. However, when 25 - …
Chasing Polys: Interdisciplinary Affinity And Its Connection To Physics Identity, Tyler Scott
Chasing Polys: Interdisciplinary Affinity And Its Connection To Physics Identity, Tyler Scott
All Dissertations
This research is based on two motivations that merge by means of the frameworks of interdisciplinary affinity and physics identity. First, a goal of education is to develop interdisciplinary abilities in students' thinking and work. But an often ignored factor is students interests and beliefs about being interdisciplinary. Thus, this work develops and uses a framework called interdisciplinary affinity. It encompasses students interests in making connections across disciplines and their beliefs about their abilities to make those connections. The second motivation of this research is to better understand how to engage more students with physics. Physics identity describes how a …
Demonstrating Reflection: A Content Analysis Of Reflection That English Teacher Candidates Demonstrate In Writing, William Kerns
Demonstrating Reflection: A Content Analysis Of Reflection That English Teacher Candidates Demonstrate In Writing, William Kerns
All Dissertations
This study is an analysis of the depth of reflection exhibited in written documents produced by English teacher candidates. Description and insights were drawn into the reflective thinking of the undergraduate teacher candidates in the context of teacher research essays that they produced. Reflection is widely viewed as enabling teacher candidates to make connections between actions and consequences as well as between theory and practice. Teacher education programs are encouraged by accreditation agencies to adopt a framework that helps teacher candidates to reflect on practice. However, there is no broadly accepted protocol in place for determining depth of reflection that …
