All Archived Publications
Many opportunities for enjoyment, learning, and interaction can be provided through the child's use of homemade games and equipment. Children love games and parents usually like to provide as many as they can. However, not only does the family budget often limit the quantity and quality of pieces of equipment that can be purchased, but in addition many store toys are limited in terms of their learning potential for children and parents. It is the intent of this booklet to suggest games that can be made from easily accessible and inexpensive materials.

In April 1990 a documented list of 33 Critical Issues Facing American Families was sent to a nationwide sample of 1,23 I persons. This list identified and briefly overviewed various social concerns which effect the family as an institution. The sample was selected by State Extension Specialists serving the needs of families. The sample included persons who were professional staff working for Extension, University teachers/researchers in a family-related discipline, public school educators, and other persons who had and had not used Extension Services in the recent past.

American consumers lose an estimated $50 billion per year-almost $700 per household-to fraudulent schemes and deceptive sales practices. While most businesses are honest and fair to consumers, some arc not. It takes two people-a seller and a consumer-to make a deceptive selling scheme work.

Many individual problems are known to be related to dysfunctional families such as substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, family violence, childhood and adolescent depression, runaways, early teen sexual acting out, civil disobedience, and other family and social problems. Attitudes expressed by people in the 1980s have shown an increased emphasis for meaningful, fulfilling, interpersonal relationships. This focus will likely continue in the following decade. This type of fulfillment is sought more within the family than in other societal institutions.

Growth Stimulants And Feed Additives, Norris J. Stenquist
All Archived Publications
In recent years, the most revolutionary increases in beef cattle weights and feeding efficiencies have resulted from the development and use of growth stimulants, feed additives, and antibiotics. These nonnutritive products not only improve the rate and efficiency of gain but prevent certain diseases as well. Their use has significantly improved beef cattle production efficiency and provided a greater return per dollar invested than any other factor in the livestock industry. Water quality has become the focal point of many decisions involving crop production. Crop production depends on specific inputs including fertilizer application. Without proper fertilization a farmer cannot achieve maximum economic returns. Crop yields in Utah have been increased over 50% by nitrogen fertilizer application alone. However, increasing nitrogen application beyond that needed for optimum economic return does more harm than good. This is especially true when groundwater concerns are addressed.
