Narratives Of The Numbers: Analyzing Cultural And Political Perspectives On Accounting In America, Michael Lenard (Class Of 2017)

Academic Festival

A plethora of elements have influenced the development of accounting standards and practices, including political, economic, legal, and ethical considerations. Throughout history, these perspectives on accounting have been shaped by the values held at the collective level of each international culture. Geert Hofstede identified four “societal value dimensions” that influence business decisions – individualism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and masculinity – and that these value dimensions vary throughout the world. Furthermore, Sidney Gray built upon this framework within the context of accounting values and practices. This paper reviews these theories in relation to major points in the historical timeline of …

Assessment And Perceptions Of The Built Environment Among College Aged Runners, Sarah Nacci Apr 2017

Assessment And Perceptions Of The Built Environment Among College Aged Runners, Sarah Nacci

Academic Festival

Background: The built environment (BE) is the physical, man-made constructs of communities. BE is associated with health and has a strong influence on pedestrian safety. Factors such as presence of sidewalks, crosswalks, and the speed of traffic are all vital in this relationship. Most BE studies assess the walkability of neighborhoods. However, no researchers have assessed the “runability” of environments including college campuses and surrounding areas where students run. Objective: This research compared perceptions of “runability” to variables including gender, weekly mileage and grade using a survey that assessed infrastructure features and the speed of traffic of the roads surrounding …

Knowledge Of Iron Deficiency Vs. Toxicity In College-Level Distance Runners, Sarah Bent Apr 2017

Knowledge Of Iron Deficiency Vs. Toxicity In College-Level Distance Runners, Sarah Bent

Academic Festival

Distance runners’ knowledge regarding iron deficiency has been previously examined. Knowledge of the acute or chronic effects of iron toxicity, however, has never been assessed. The purpose of the present study was to investigate college distance runners’ knowledge about issues related to basic nutrition and iron toxicity, as well as influences on the choice to supplement with iron. Ninety-eight college distance runners (54 F; 44 M) were recruited from three Division 1 programs in the northeastern U.S. to participate in a 22-question, pen-and-paper survey. Major findings were that the mean score for a 10-item question asking respondents to identify high-iron …

Advanced Computer Ethics: A Study Of Artificial Intelligence, Leanne Scorcia Apr 2017

Advanced Computer Ethics: A Study Of Artificial Intelligence, Leanne Scorcia

Academic Festival

Justice, Autonomy, Freedom, Democracy, Equality, Privacy and the Common Good are all values that can be supported or threatened by computer technology. Considering that computer technologies are the fundamental infrastructure of the Information Age, ethical questions arise regarding access and control, privacy, property, identity and professional responsibility. It is important as a future Computer Scientist and Game Developer that I understand the ethical boundaries involved in software development. In this course, I will examine these values as issues that arise at the intersection of ethics, computers, technology, and society are addressed. I will also be closely studying (and presenting a …

Using Eye-Tracking To Measure Areas Of Interest In Digital Advertising, Jeanine Minnocci Apr 2017

Using Eye-Tracking To Measure Areas Of Interest In Digital Advertising, Jeanine Minnocci

Academic Festival

In digital advertising, companies might design their piece without thorough consideration of what areas of interest attract the consumers’ attention. This research measures the preferences of digital advertising by measuring students’ eye movements. This methodological contribution consists of recruiting students at Sacred Heart University and exposing them to pieces of digital advertising from the 2016 Webby Awards. By using eye-tracking technology, students’ areas of interest will be measured using metrics such as, point of gaze; saccade order; heat maps; opacity maps; and areas of interest (AOIs). The participants will look at each digital ad on a monitor for several seconds …

An Examination Of Rates Of Use And Correlates Of Protective Behavioral Strategies Among College Students, Ashley Loser, Amanda Tyrrell, Matthew Monaco, Brianna Novio Apr 2017

An Examination Of Rates Of Use And Correlates Of Protective Behavioral Strategies Among College Students, Ashley Loser, Amanda Tyrrell, Matthew Monaco, Brianna Novio

Academic Festival

The current study examines alcohol harm reduction strategies, such as the promotion of protective behavioral strategies (PBS). PBS are commonly used on college campuses to protect against the negative effects of alcohol use. Although research exists to support the use of PBS, very little information exists on differential use of the types of strategies. The current research analyzed the frequency of use of PBS as well as potential correlates of use such as demographic characteristics, exposure to prevention information, and actual rates of alcohol use among college students. An online survey developed by a national college health association was administered …

Teacher's Perception Of Budget Cuts In Affluent And Non-Affluent School Districts, Erin Hickey Apr 2017

Teacher's Perception Of Budget Cuts In Affluent And Non-Affluent School Districts, Erin Hickey

Academic Festival

Teachers in school districts all over the country struggle with budget cuts. Resources are often insufficient, particularly in non-affluent schools. Based on the work of Mead on socialization, it was hypothesized that, teachers in poor school districts would perceive budget cuts to be significantly more detrimental to educational outcomes than teachers in affluent schools districts. To test this hypothesis a cross-sectional survey was conducted with 59 teachers from both affluent and non-affluent. From the survey given, the results show no significance between teachers in affluent and non-affluent schools districts and budget cuts.

Career Planning And Alcohol Consumption, Christina Rota

Academic Festival

In my research I sought out to test the hypothesis whether disconnection with career planning/ job prospects is associated with higher levels of alcohol use. The hypothesis follows from Emile Durkheim’s theory regarding anomie that holds if social and moral norms are unclear it can lead to deviant behavior and lack of stability in other aspects of life. Insufficient integration in culture and society has negative consequences for the individual. The research design was quantitative, more specifically a cross sectional survey. It was administered through; Survey Monkey, with a web link sent out to participants via Facebook and Email. A …

Use Of Academic Resources Among Different Socioeconomic Classes, Kristin Zimmerman

Academic Festival

Accessing academic resources is a significant factor in educational success at the college level. Based on Bourdieu’s concept of economic and cultural capital and Lareau’s theory of social inequality it is hypothesized that students from high socioeconomic status will access academic resources at a significantly higher rate than students of lower socioeconomic status. In a survey of 120 college students, the hypothesis was tested. Basic hypothesis testing showed no significant difference between students at different income levels in accessing academic resources. Advanced hypothesis testing did display a significant difference in males and undergraduate seniors from higher socioeconomic families. A more …

Double Discrimination: An Analysis Of Gender And Race's Role In Trauma, Jessica Lewis

Throughout her novel, The Color Purple, Alice Walker investigates the notion of double discrimination. She points out that a woman’s gender is one of the contributing factors as to why she is discriminated against. Walker outlines race as an equally influential component of discrimination and with that, highlights both gender and race as a driving force behind an individual’s identity. Through her carefully constructed female characters, Walker successfully exposes how both gender and race act as a catalyst for oppression against African American women. The novel focuses on rigid gender and race-based stereotypes imposed by society on African American women …
