As the Baby Boomer population continues to age, so will the number of older adults that are food insecure. This paper examines the definition of food insecurity, the three main factors of food insecurity in relation to older adults, and preventive services for food insecurity. I will also use my experiences as geriatric Social Worker to better explain the causes of food insecurity with this population.

This panel will explore the explosion in craft brewing in the Carolinas from a gendered perspective, specifically from the perspective of local women brewers, highlighting Rachael Hudson, owner of Pilot Brewing, Carol Waggoner, owner of Bold Missy, and Suzie Ford, owner of NoDa brewery. I will serve as panel moderator and ask each woman questions about the business, marketing, and production aspects of brewing as women in the field. This paper describes how the Medicaid expansions associated with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 influenced the ability of households to purchase adequate food. This paper also closely examines the role of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in meeting food needs, and whether multiple program participation affects food insecurity outcomes.

This paper addresses the metaphorical and mnemotechnical connections between food and romantic and sexual desire through a selective survey of cultural and literary productions. As the history of American popular music (Dee Dee Sharp’s “Gravy (For My Mash Potatoes)”, Willie Dixon’s/Howlin’ Wolf’s “Back Door Man,” the Archies’ and Wilson Pickett’s “Sugar, Surgar”, etc.) reveals, the metaphorical connection between food and romantic and sexual love is often deployed in the name of prevailing notions of heteronormative and patriarchal desire, reinforcing a model of romance and desire premised on a consumptive enjoyment of the other. Gastro-Geographies And The Cosmopolitan Host: Re-Mapping Cosmopolitanism In Anthony Bourdain’S Parts Unknown, Shelby E. Ward

The World of Food: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on What We Eat and Grow

This paper looks at Anthony Bourdain's production on screen as a cosmopolitan host and as a particular gastro-geographical narrative. With three different episodes of Parts Unknown (CNN), I investigate how Bourdain allows us to question gender roles, development discourse, and the American image through the traces of food, while at the same time being limited in his role as the cosmopolitan.
