Roads And Corresponding Travel Time To Markets: Assessing Climate Vulnerability In Nepal, Kaitlyn Crowley
Roads And Corresponding Travel Time To Markets: Assessing Climate Vulnerability In Nepal, Kaitlyn Crowley
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Roads exist as a physical and theoretical connection between people and places around the globe. In addition to providing a route from one point to another, roads are also an indicator of access to markets and of poverty. However, current road datasets, particularly the Global Roads Open Access Data Set, are out of date or incomplete, necessitating new sources of data for analyses involving road networks. This study explores the relationship between climate change and access to markets in Nepal. We seek to identify isolated communities that are likely to experience detrimental outcomes associated with environmental threats, such as increasing …
From Rain Drops To Rivers: Unraveling Aridification's Influence On Coastal Stream Ecosystem Dynamics, Sean Kelly Kinard
From Rain Drops To Rivers: Unraveling Aridification's Influence On Coastal Stream Ecosystem Dynamics, Sean Kelly Kinard
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation addresses the escalating threat of aridification to global freshwater ecosystems due to anthropogenic climate change, focusing on South-Central Texas, USA, using a space-for-time approach along a precipitation gradient from semi-arid to sub-humid. Over the 2017-2020 survey period, I integrated community, stable isotope, climate, and hydrologic data.In Chapter 2, my initial assessment of fish and invertebrate communities along the precipitation gradient unveiled compositional shifts and other nuanced responses. Positive correlations between fish diversity and rainfall, coupled with unexpected invertebrate diversity patterns, underscored the role of water quality in shaping fish assemblages. Drier conditions imposed abiotic filters, reducing diversity and …
Considering Tidal Flooding To Provide A Holistic Approach To Nutrient Input Management, Mary Beth Armstrong
Considering Tidal Flooding To Provide A Holistic Approach To Nutrient Input Management, Mary Beth Armstrong
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This report explores the integration of tidal flooding impacts into nutrient management frameworks for the Chesapeake Bay, a potentially large gap in current strategies. Coastal communities in the Chesapeake Bay, face an increasing threat from tidal flooding—also known as sunny-day flooding—which occurs without rainfall. In 2023, Norfolk, Virginia experienced 10 days of tidal flooding, but forecasts indicate that by 2075 the area could be experiencing tidal flooding every day. Recent research highlights that even a single tidal flooding event can introduce substantial nutrient loads into the Bay, sometimes exceeding the annual nutrient allocations. This significant increase in both the frequency …

China's Hidden Role In Malaria Control And Elimination In Africa, Julius Nyerere Odhiambo, Carrie B. Dolan, Ammar A. Malik, Aaron Tavel
Arts & Sciences Articles
Background
Insufficient funding is hindering the achievement of malaria elimination targets in Africa, despite the pressing need for increased investment in malaria control. While Western donors attribute their inaction to financial constraints, the global health community has limited knowledge of China’s expanding role in malaria prevention. This knowledge gap arises from the fact that China does not consistently report its foreign development assistance activities to established aid transparency initiatives. Our work focuses on identifying Chinese-funded malaria control projects throughout Africa and linking them to official data on malaria prevalence. By doing so, we aim to shed light on China’s contributions …

Synthesis Of Shoreline, Sea Level Rise, And Marsh Migration Data For Wetland Restoration Targeting Final Report, Molly Mitchell, Karinna Nunez, Christine Tombleson, Julie Herman
Data
Coastal marsh loss is a significant issue globally, due in part to rising sea levels and high levels of coastal human activity. Marshes have natural mechanisms to allow them to adapt to rising sea levels, however, migration across the landscape is one of those mechanisms and is frequently in conflict with human use of the shoreline. Ensuring the persistence of marshes into the future requires an understanding of where marshes are likely to migrate under sea level rise and targeting those areas for conservation and preservation activities. The goal of this project was to 1) compile existing datasets and information …
Seeing What We Can't: Evaluating Implicit Biases In Deep Learning Satellite Imagery Models Trained For Poverty Prediction, Joseph O'Brien
Seeing What We Can't: Evaluating Implicit Biases In Deep Learning Satellite Imagery Models Trained For Poverty Prediction, Joseph O'Brien
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Previous studies have sought to use Convolutional Neural Networks for regional estimation of poverty levels. However, there is limited research into possible implicit biases in deep neural networks in the context of satellite imagery. In this work, we develop a deep learning model to predict the tertile of per-capita asset consumption, trained on satellite imagery and World Bank Living Standards Measurements Study data. Using satellite imagery collected via survey location data as inputs, we use transfer learning to train a VGG-16 Convolutional Neural Network to classify images based on per-capita consumption. The model achieves an $R^2$ of .74, using thousands …

A Satellite Imagery Approach To Estimating Migratory Flows In Guatemala Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Sarah Larimer
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Being able to predict migratory flows is important in ensuring political, social, and economic stability. In the wake of violence, unrest, natural disasters, and social pressures, millions of mi- grants have fled Central America in search of a better life. However, due to the infrequent nature and high cost of census data, there is a need for a more remote and up to date approaches. Con- volutional Neural Networks offer a computer vision based approach that is cheaper and with significantly less lag. In this study, we seek to evaluate the effectiveness of different convolu- tional neural networks in predicting …
Fdi And Environmental Externalities In Southeast Asia, Kevin Bloodworth
Fdi And Environmental Externalities In Southeast Asia, Kevin Bloodworth
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this paper I explore the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and deforestation in Cambodia. Through an event study framework, I show that economic land concessions have a negative relationship with tree cover, over time, having stronger and stronger negative effects. This relationship is more pronounced in foreign economic land concessions when compared to domestic economic land concessions. Through the use of a difference in differences research design I examine the relationship between foreign and domestic concessions through the implementation of a ELC concession ban. The ban only led to worsening levels of deforestation within the borders of foreign …
Considering The Accuracy Of Fiat Boundaries: Ontology And Quantification, Lydia Troup
Considering The Accuracy Of Fiat Boundaries: Ontology And Quantification, Lydia Troup
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Administrative boundaries - i.e., states, counties, or districts - are fiat boundaries; they exist purely as defined by human interpretation. Because of this, and despite their critical importance to government functions, the accuracy of data products claiming to represent such boundaries is difficult to measure. Here, I explore this topic using three boundary data sets: the open source geoBoundaries data set, the humanitarian UN OCHA’s Common Operational Datasets (COD), and Esri’s commercial administrative divisions 0 and 1 data sets in the Living Atlas. The accuracy of each was quantified as the percent overlap between each data set and an authoritative …

Infrastructures Of Race? Colonial Indigenous Segregation And Contemporaneous Urban Sorting, Luis Baldomero-Quintana, Guillermo Woo-Mora, Enrique De La Rosa-Ramos
Arts & Sciences Articles
We study the impacts of a colonial segregation policy on modern-day spatial population patterns and residential sorting by human capital in Mexican cities. After the Conquest, the Spanish aimed to segregate Indigenous individuals into settlements called pueblos de indios. While the segregation policy lasted until the end of the colonial era, we use present-day census data at the block level on population, schooling and access to medical services to understand the persistent effects of pueblos on within-city structure. First, we document a spatial non-monotonic correlation between the location of the pueblos and population deagglomerations. Second, we study the causal impact …

Introduction: As sea level rises and coastal communities simultaneously grow, road flooding has the potential to significantly disrupt travel along road networks and make houses, businesses, and critical facilities difficult to reach. The impacts of tidal and storm surge flooding on roadways present challenging social and economic considerations for all coastal jurisdictions. Maintenance, public and private accessibility, evacuation routes, emergency services are just a few of the common themes local governments are beginning to address for low-lying roadways currently known to flood. Continuation of these services allows a community to thrive, to maintain or increase its tax base, and to …

Increasing the preservation and creation of natural and nature-based features (NNBF), like wetlands, living shorelines, beaches, dunes and other natural features to improve community resilience in the face of increasing coastal flooding may be achieved by highlighting the locally relevant benefits that these features can provide. Here we present a novel application of the least-cost geospatial modeling approach to generate inundation pathways that highlight landscape connections between NNBF and vulnerable infrastructure. Inundation pathways are then used to inform a ranking framework that assesses NNBF based on their provision of benefits and services to vulnerable infrastructure and for the broader community …

The Roles Of Tidal Marshes In The Estuarine Biochemical Processes: A Numerical Modeling Study, Xun Cai
The Roles Of Tidal Marshes In The Estuarine Biochemical Processes: A Numerical Modeling Study, Xun Cai
VIMS Articles
Observations suggest that the existence of tidal marsh can alter the oxygen and nutrient dynamics in adjacent water bodies, but assessing the impacts of large tidal marshes on an estuary is challenging. In this study, we use a modeling approach to investigate the roles of tidal marshes on the estuarine biochemical processes. The marsh model, which simulates the ecological functions of marshes at seasonal and annual time-scales, is embedded inside an unstructured-grid three-dimensional hydrodynamic and eutrophication model (SCHISM-ICM). This modeling system simulates the growth and metabolism of the tidal marshes and links biological processes to nutrient dynamics in the water …

Human migratory decisions are driven by a wide range of factors, including economic and environmental condi-tions, conflict, and evolving social dynamics. These factors are reflected in disparate data sources, including house-hold surveys, satellite imagery, and even news and social media. Here, we present a deep learning- based data fusion technique integrating satellite and census data to estimate migratory flows from Mexico to the United States. We leverage a three-stage approach, in which we (1) construct a matrix- based representation of socioeconomic information for each municipality in Mexico, (2) implement a convolutional neural network with both satellite imagery and the constructed …

Distribution of Earth’s biomes is structured by the match between climate and plant traits, which in turn shape associated communities and ecosystem processes and services. However, that climate–trait match can be disrupted by historical events, with lasting ecosystem impacts. As Earth’s environment changes faster than at any time in human history, critical questions are whether and how organismal traits and ecosystems can adjust to altered conditions. We quantified the relative importance of current environmental forcing versus evolutionary history in shaping the growth form (stature and biomass) and associated community of eelgrass (Zostera marina), a widespread foundation plant of …

Showing Off And Going Out: China’S Vanity Project Phenomenon, Caroline Morin
Showing Off And Going Out: China’S Vanity Project Phenomenon, Caroline Morin
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In September 2018, Xi Jinping announced that BRI financing will not be spent on vanity projects. Despite and prior to this proclamation, using the AidData data set, I uncovered a vanity project phenomenon in Chinese development financing. Chinese financed vanity projects, or development projects that do not aid a country’s development needs, are present in 79 countries across the world, ranging from sports stadiums in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to community centers in the Pacific islands. In this thesis, I find that vanity projects are most likely to occur in fragile states with strong international political cooperation with …

The year of 2020 will famously be known by most as the year “the world stopped working.” Unfortunately, the world had not been functioning sufficiently prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing 2019 as a pre-pandemic baseline, the not so evident discrepancies in healthcare systems were illuminated during the pandemic, not only between countries but also between states, cities, and even counties. My research, being inductive, aims to dissect the pathways that allow health inequities to exist alongside providing realistic solutions that could be implemented through health policy. To accomplish my research goal, I conducted a case study that compares the …

The Pandemic From Above: Estimating Covid-19 Cases Using Deep Learning And Satellite Imagery, John Hennin
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Monitoring the spread of an outbreak of disease (such as COVID-19) is an important component of any coordinated pandemic response. Across the globe, our ability to conduct such monitoring - especially at early stages of the COVID- 19 pandemic - was highly limited due to a lack of public reporting mechanisms. Today, the process of case data collection remains expensive and, in some regions, is subject to political considerations. Researchers have turned to some techniques leveraging Google Trends and Twitter data to overcome limitations in public data sources. Here, we provide another approach which leverages satellite information to provide estimates …

Tropical cyclones drive coastal ecosystem dynamics, and their frequency, intensity, and spatial distribution are pre-dicted to shift with climate change. Patterns of resistance and resilience were synthesized for 4138 ecosystem time series from n = 26 storms occurring between 1985 and 2018 in the Northern Hemisphere to predict how coastal ecosystems will respond to future disturbance regimes. Data were grouped by ecosystems (fresh water, salt water, terrestrial, and wetland) and response categories (biogeochemistry, hydrography, mobile biota, sedentary fauna, and vascular plants). We observed a repeated pattern of trade-offs between resistance and resilience across analyses. These patterns are likely the outcomes …

Aerial surveys of coastal habitats can uniquely inform the science and management of shallow, coastal zones, and when repeated annually, they reveal changes that are otherwise difficult to assess from ground-based surveys. This paper reviews the utility of a long-term (1984–present) annual aerial monitoring program for submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) in Chesapeake Bay, its tidal tributaries, and nearby Atlantic coastal bays, USA. We present a series of applications that highlight the program’s importance in assessing anthropogenic impacts, gauging water quality status and trends, establishing and evaluating restoration goals, and understanding the impact of commercial fishing practices on benthic habitats. Data
Geospatial layers displaying annual flooding duration in the coastal zone of Virginia. These were generated from publicly available historical hourly tidal data from the NOAA Tides and Currents website from various tide gauges in the Chesapeake Bay region for the last 20 years. Particular tide gauges were linked to specific localities depending on location. The data was processed to determine average annual flooding duration at various flooding levels. Flood levels corresponding to specified average annual duration levels were then determined and used with lidar-derived digital elevation models to extract flood areas corresponding to the specified ranges of flood duration. Specifically, …
