Influence Of Salinity On Sav Distribution In A Series Of Intermittently Connected Coastal Lakes, A. Challen Hyman, Rom Lipcius, R. Gray, D. B. Stephens

Intermittently closed and open lakes and lagoons (ICOLLs) are coastal lakes that intermittently exchange water with the sea and experience saline intrusions. Understanding effects of seawater exchange on local biota is important to preserve ecosystem functioning and ecological integrity. Coastal dune lakes of northwest Florida are an understudied group of ICOLLs in close geographic proximity and with entrance regimes operating along a frequency continuum. We exploited this natural continuum and corresponding water chemistry gradient to determine effects of water chemistry on resident submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) distributions in these ecosystems. SAV distribution decreased with increases in salinity, but was unaffected …

Abstract: The 2015 Chesapeake Bay SAV Coverage was mapped from digital multispectral imagery with a 25cm GSD to assess water quality in the Bay. Each area of SAV was interpreted from the rectified imagry and classified into one of four density classes by the percentage of cover. The SAV beds were entered into an SDE GIS fetaure class using the quality control procedures documented below. The dataset contains all SAV areas that were identified from the areas flown. Some areas that are presumed to contain no SAV were not flown. Some small beds, particularly along narrow tributaries may not have …

SA V distribution data in this report are presented and discussed based on the segmentation scheme adopted by the Chesapeake Bay Program (Flemer et al., 1983) and described briefly in the Methods section of this report. This zonation scheme (Upper, Middle, and Lower zones) for Chesapeake Bay, which accommodates the Chesapeake Bay Program segmentation boundaries, was adapted from that used in previous SAV distribution reports (i.e., Orth et al., 1994) and established by Orth and Moore ( 1982), then modified by Orth et al., ( 1989). The 1996 data were edgematched using ARC/INFO GIS software, as were all the historical …
