First Records Of Hypleurochilus Geminatus And Centropristis Philadelphica From Chesapeake Bay, Aimee D. Halvorson Oct 2009

First Records Of Hypleurochilus Geminatus And Centropristis Philadelphica From Chesapeake Bay, Aimee D. Halvorson

VIMS Articles

During the fall of 2007, Centropristis philadelphica (rock seabass) and Hypleurochilus geminatus (crested blenny) were collected from Chesapeake Bay. These captures are significant as they represent the first substantiated record of C. philadelphica from Chesapeake Bay and only the second and third validated records of H. geminatus. Additionally, the first record of H. geminatus from Chesapeake Bay was only recently recognized since the specimen had been previously misidentified as Parablennius marmoreus (seaweed blenny). The collection of seven individuals of H. geminatus in 2007, from two locations, indicates that the species may be resident within the Chesapeake Bay estuary.

Variability In Juvenile Growth, Mortality, Maturity, And Abundance Of American Shad And Blueback Herring In Virginia, Troy D. Tuckey Jan 2009

Variability In Juvenile Growth, Mortality, Maturity, And Abundance Of American Shad And Blueback Herring In Virginia, Troy D. Tuckey

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Young-of-year (YOY) population dynamics of American shad and blueback herring in Virginia's rivers were examined with an emphasis on variability in growth and mortality rates. In addition, an analysis was conducted to relate juvenile abundance indices of American shad to adult indices to establish a stock-recruitment relationship. to accomplish the stock recruitment relationship, an additional study that examined maturation schedules and inter-annual variability in maturation schedules among stocks was performed. Results of population dynamics studies found that growth and mortality rates of American shad and blueback herring varied by river and year and that conspecific abundance was an important factor …

Function Of Seed-Bank Ecology In Mid-Atlantic Semi-Annual And Perennial Zostera Marina Beds, Jessie C. Jarvis Jan 2009

Function Of Seed-Bank Ecology In Mid-Atlantic Semi-Annual And Perennial Zostera Marina Beds, Jessie C. Jarvis

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The effects of water quality and sediment composition on mid-Atlantic semi-annual and perennial Zostera marina reproductive success, seed-bank viability, and seed germination were elucidated using laboratory and in situ experiments, quantitative field observations, and ecological model simulations. The sediment seed-bank was found to play a large role in the recovery of perennial Z. marina beds in the Chesapeake Bay and in the yearly re-establishment of beds in North Carolina which were determined to have a semi-annual life history. However, the resiliency provided by sediment seed-bank for both semi-annual and perennial Z. marina beds was limited as seeds remained viable for …

Enhancing The Trap Of Lady's Slippers: A New Technique For Discovering Pollinators Yields New Data From Cypripedium Parviflorum (Orchidaceae), Martha A. Case, Zachary R. Bradford Jan 2009

Enhancing The Trap Of Lady's Slippers: A New Technique For Discovering Pollinators Yields New Data From Cypripedium Parviflorum (Orchidaceae), Martha A. Case, Zachary R. Bradford

Arts & Sciences Articles

Approximately one-third of orchid species offer no reward to their floral visitors and instead trick them into pollination. Typically, these deceptive systems have low visitation and fruiting rates because pollinators can learn to avoid non-rewarding species. Consequently, pollination ecology studies in these species often require long hours in the field to witness relatively few floral visitations relative to rewarding plants. Cypripedium parviflorum is a food-deceptive orchid with a pouch-like trap that temporarily imprisons pollinators. To escape, pollinators exert pressure on the stigma which facilitates pollination and widens the escape holes located near each anther. This study reports the use of …

Relaxation Oscillation Profile Of Limit Cycle In Predator-Prey System, Sze-Bi Hsu, Junping Shi, Junping Shi Jan 2009

Relaxation Oscillation Profile Of Limit Cycle In Predator-Prey System, Sze-Bi Hsu, Junping Shi, Junping Shi

Arts & Sciences Articles

It is known that some predator-prey system can possess a unique limit cycle which is globally asymptotically stable. For a prototypical predator-prey system, we show that the solution curve of the limit cycle exhibits temporal patterns of a relaxation oscillator, or a Heaviside function, when certain parameter is small.
