As part of the Chesapeake 2000 agreement, the Commonwealth of Virginia pledged to a wetland policy of no net-loss. Through conscientious resource protection and management, Virginia’s non-tidal and tidal wetland permit programs, administered by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and The Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) respectfully, are committed to reaching this goal. New In Situ Method For Measuring Seston Uptake By Suspension-Feeding Bivalve Molluscs, Re Grizzle, Jk Greene, Mark Luckenbach, Ld Coen

The most commonly used methods for measuring the amount of seston removed from the water column (uptake) by populations of suspension-feeding bivalve molluscs involve taking discrete water samples followed by laboratory analyses. Here we describe a new method based on in situ fluorometry that provides rapid measurement of seston removal rates. The new system is comprised of two identical units, each consisting of an in situ fluorometer, data logger and peristaltic pump with plastic tube attached to a deployment device. Bioreactivity Of Estuarine Dissolved Organic Matter: A Combined Geochemical And Microbiological Approach, Sl Mccallister, Je Bauer, Elizabeth A. Canuel

An integrated multidisciplinary study utilizing geochemical and microbial ecological approaches was conducted to characterize the origins, chemical nature, and quantities of dissolved and particulate organic matter (OM) utilized by heterotrophic bacteria in a temperate estuary. C: N, stable isotope (delta C-13), and lipid biomarker analyses revealed differences in the inferred reactivity of autochthonous versus allochthonous OM sources. Isotopic comparison of OM size fractions and bacterial nucleic acids suggests that high-molecular-weight dissolved OM (DOM) is consistently linked to bacterial biomass synthesis along the estuarine salinity gradient. Floristic Quality Index: Ecological And Management Implications In Created And Natural Wetlands, Douglas A. Deberry

We applied the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) to vegetation data collected across a chronosequence of created wetland (CW) sites in Virginia ranging in age from one to 15 years post-construction. at each site, we also applied FQI to a nearby forested reference wetland (REF), for a total of 30 sites (15 created, 15 reference). We tested the performance of the index against a selection of community metrics (species richness, diversity, evenness, percent native species) and site attributes (age, soil physiochemical variables).
