Wild And Aquaculture Populations Of The Eastern Oyster Compared Using Microsatellites, J Carlsson, Cl Morrison, Kimberly S. Reece
VIMS Articles
Five new microsatellite markers were developed for the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica), and allelic variability was compared between a wild Chesapeake Bay population (James River) and a hatchery strain (DEBY (TM)). All loci amplified readily and demonstrated allelic variability with the number of alleles ranging from 16 to 36 in the wild population and from 11 to 19 in the DEBY (TM) strain. Average observed and expected heterozygosities were estimated at 0.66 and 0.80 in the hatchery sample. The corresponding estimates were 0.91 and 0.75 in the wild sample. Results indicated lower genetic variability in the DEBY (TM) strain and …

Derelict Blue Crab Trap Impacts On Marine Fisheries In The Lower York River, Virginia, Kirk J. Havens, Donna Marie Bilkovic, David Stanhope, Kory Angstadt, Carl Hershner, Center For Coastal Resources Management, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science
Reports
In Virginia, an examination of existing derelict trap data retrieved from Chesapeake Bay Multispecies Monitoring and Assessment Program (ChesMMAP) trawl surveys shows the potential effect of derelict traps on fish communities in Virginia waters (Bonzek and Latour 2005). Since 2002, ChesMMAP has attempted to sample 90 stations in the mainstem Chesapeake Bay ranging from the southern edge of the Susquehanna Flats to the Bay mouth in all depths to a minimum of 10 feet during each cruise. There are approximately 4-5 cruises per year and a large mesh bottom trawl is used to capture adult fish of a variety of …

The marine ecosystem of the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) extends from the Bellingshausen Sea to the northern tip of the peninsula and from the mostly glaciated coast across the continental shelf to the shelf break in the west. The glacially sculpted coastline along the peninsula is highly convoluted and characterized by deep embayments that are often interconnected by channels that facilitate transport of heat and nutrients into the shelf domain. The ecosystem is divided into three subregions, the continental slope, shelf and coastal regions, each with unique ocean dynamics, water mass and biological distributions. The WAP shelf lies within the …

Marine snow aggregates are microbial hotspots that support high bacterial abundance and activities. We conducted laboratory experiments to compare cell‐specific bacterial protein production (BPP) and protease activity between free‐living and attached bacteria. Natural bacterial assemblages attached to model aggregates (agar spheres) had threefold higher BPP and two orders of magnitude higher protease activity than their free‐living counterpart. These observations could be explained by preferential colonization of the agar spheres by bacteria with inherently higher metabolic activity and/or individual bacteria increasing their metabolism upon attachment to surfaces. In subsequent experiments, we used four strains of marine snow bacteria isolates to test …

Mycobacterium ulcerans and Mycobacterium marinum are closely related pathogens which share an aquatic environment. The pathogenesis of these organisms in humans is limited by their inability to grow above 35 degrees C. M. marinum causes systemic disease in fish but produces localized skin infections in humans. M. ulcerans causes Burulli ulcer, a severe human skin lesion. At the molecular level, M. ulcerans is distinguished from M. marinum by the presence of a virulence plasmid which encodes a macrolide toxin, mycolactone, as well as by hundreds of insertion sequences, particularly IS2404. There has been a global increase in reports of fish …
Genetic Analysis Of White Marlin (Tetrapturus Albidus) Stock Structure, John Graves, Jan Mcdowell
Genetic Analysis Of White Marlin (Tetrapturus Albidus) Stock Structure, John Graves, Jan Mcdowell
VIMS Articles
The genetic basis of stock structure of white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus Poey, 1860) was inferred from analyses of five tetranucleotide repeat microsatellite loci (n = 214) and the mitochondrial (mt)DNA control region (n = 99) of white marlin from four geographic regions in the Atlantic Ocean. Considerable genetic variation was present in all collections for all molecular markers. Analysis of replicate collections taken in different years from three regions revealed no significant differences in the distribution of allele frequencies among years within regions. The value of global F-statistics for both multilocus microsatellite data and mtDNA control region sequences approached significance …
Microbial Abundance, Composition And Enzymatic Activity During Decomposition Of Copepod Carcasses, Kw Tang, Kml Hutalle, Et Al
Microbial Abundance, Composition And Enzymatic Activity During Decomposition Of Copepod Carcasses, Kw Tang, Kml Hutalle, Et Al
VIMS Articles
Literature suggests that zooplankton carcasses are prevalent at times in both freshwater and marine environments, and could be important substrate sources for water column microbes (Dubovskaya et al. 2003, Hydrobiologia 504:223-227; Tang et al. 2006b, Estuar Coast Shelf Sci 68:499-508). We conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the decomposition of copepod carcasses by ambient microbes from Lake Dagow, Germany. Bacteria rapidly colonized and decomposed the carcasses, mainly from the inside. The ambient bacterial abundance increased 2-fold or more at the peak of decomposition, but decreased afterward, presumably due to protozoan grazing. Initial increase in ambient bacteria was faster at 20 degrees …

Arts & Sciences Articles
The coordination chemistry of 2-aminopyrimidine (PymNH2) with nickel(II) and cobalt(II) nitrate and chloride is reported, including seven new X-ray crystal structures. Two [Ni(NO3)2(PymNH2)2(OH2)] isomers were found (A: C2/c, a=13.3006(5), b=7.9727(3), c=28.5453(11), β=101.758(2), V=2963.48(19), Z=8 and B·1/2 acetone: P21/c, a=7.66060(10), b=10.6792(2), c=20.6790(3), β=100.2970(10), 1664.48(5), Z=4). In both cases one nitrate is monodentate and the other is chelating and the PymNH2 ligands coordinate through ring nitrogen atoms. Hydrogen bonding results in double sheet structure for isomer A, and a three dimensional channeled network for isomer B. [Co(NO3)2(PymNH2)2(OH2)] ( …

Phylogeny Of Recent Billfishes (Xiphioidei), Bb Collette, Jan Mcdowell, John Graves
Phylogeny Of Recent Billfishes (Xiphioidei), Bb Collette, Jan Mcdowell, John Graves
VIMS Articles
Billfishes are genetically and morphologically distinct enough from scombroids to merit placement in a separate suborder, Xiphioidei. Two extant families are usually recognized: Xiphiidae (swordfish, Xiphias) and Istiophoridae, currently containing three genera, Istiophorus (sailfishes), Makaira (marlins), and Tetrapturus (spearfishes, white, and striped marlins). Phylogenetic analyses of molecular data from mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences (mitochondrial control region, ND2, 12S, and nuclear MN 32 regions) show a different picture of relationships. Makaira is not monophyletic: blue marlin cluster with sailfish and placement of black marlin is unstable. Accepting the molecular phylogeny gives two possible classifications: (1) two genera: blue marlin + …

Rappahannock County Riparian Buffer Study, Center For Coastal Resources Management, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science
Reports
Riparian buffers (land bordering streams) are important zones for maintaining water quality and providing critical habitat. Rappahannock County has a rural landscape that presents the opportunity to record baseline conditions of riparian buffers. This study involved analyzing a small drainage area in the Upper Thornton River watershed to offer guidance on targeting riparian buffer restoration. Aerial imagery from the Virginia Base Mapping Program (VGIN, 2002) was used to create a digital data layer containing land uses and 100 ft. buffers around the streams. Buffer cover in the riparian buffers was identified as all forested, partially forested or no forest. A …
Involving Students In Securing A Future For Fraternal Organizations, Dennis C. Roberts Ph.D., Matthew Johnson
Involving Students In Securing A Future For Fraternal Organizations, Dennis C. Roberts Ph.D., Matthew Johnson
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
Started in 2002, the Fraternal Futures initiative offers students, staff, faculty, and general community members a new way to think about change in fraternities and sororities. The project models the National Issues Forum (NIF) deliberations, a process where participants are encouraged to engage in a different way of framing complex issues. Fraternal Futures deliberations offer participants a chance to discuss change strategies from various lenses, recognizing that a typical debate style of conversation often leaves many participants unhappy and does not address the intricacies that go along with tough decisions. With over 1,100 student participants at ten different colleges/universities, results …

Assessing Student Learning And Development In Fraternity And Sorority Affairs, Terrell L. Strayhorn Ph.D., Amy J. Colvin
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
Assessment in higher education has increased over the past several decades. Pressure from constituencies for colleges to demonstrate their effectiveness in measurable terms and loss of public trust in higher education drive the movement toward assessment. Presently, assessment is part of the accreditation process. Student affairs practitioners, including those working with fraternities and sororities, are not immune to these pressures. Yet, many student affairs professionals report feeling inadequately skilled in conducting assessment projects and need guidance in this area of their work. The purpose of this manuscript is to discuss the importance of assessment and how it relates to fraternity/sorority …

Research Revisited: Cognitive Effects Of Greek Affiliation In College: Additional Evidence, Ernest T. Pascarella Ph.D., Lamont Flowers, Elizabeth J. Whitt
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
Previous research found broad based negative effects of fraternity/sorority affiliation on standardized measures of cognitive development after one year of college. Following the same sample, and employing essentially the same research design and analytic model, the present study found that the negative effects of fraternity/sorority affiliation were much less pronounced during the second or third years of college.

Perceptions Of Leadership In Undergraduate Fraternal Organizations, P. D. Harms, Dustin Woods, Brent Roberts, Dan Bureau, A. Michelle Green
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
An essential component of the culture and stated purpose of fraternities and sororities is their commitment to leadership. This is highly espoused as a prerequisite to joining and an outcome of membership. With this in mind, it is important to evaluate what leadership means in the context of a fraternity or sorority. This article concludes that leadership can be perceived as exercising power, holding formal positions, and serving as a positive role model for other members. Through understanding the multiple approaches to leadership, the culture and effectiveness of undergraduate fraternal organizations can be evaluated to verify the authenticity of claims …
